When Tobi (Madara) used Kyuubi to attack Konoha, Minato realized, after fighting Madara, that he will come back and it will need a strong Ninja, who can control Kyuubi to stop him. He hoped (of course he didnt knew) that his own son would be capable of doing this, so he sealed it in Naruto.

Kushina was the host of the Kyuubi but the seal weakened when Kushina was giving birth to Naruto. Madara used that to his advantage and stole the Kyuubi from Kushina. Then the Kyuubi is free again and gets sealed inside Naruto :D
