  • Interesting choice of video. Interestingly, many motives from this tune were borrowed by Soda Stereo in their song "La Ciudad de La Furia" (City of Fury).

  • fantastic

  • Great song! The video reminds me of the "Qatsi" trilogy

  • I used to play this video for my resplendent wife, Barbra. Besides this great music, she loved the time-lapse imagery. Now that she's in Heaven, time and space mean nothing. I hope she can still hear this when I play it.

  • @mickeymousebiker1 That is the sweetest saddest thing I ever heard.

  • @NerdyCanadian Many thanks. God keep you (always).

  • What's name this city on the video?

  • fuckin love the tune and the video matches perfectly

  • Haunting. Ageless.

  • @clayguy33 I agree 110%! Music for the day after tomorrow.

  • @clayguy33 Precisely!

  • Just out of interest, compare this video and tune with Aphex Twin, 'Xtal'. Hmmmmm!

  • @62clanger

Yeah, especially since Billy Currie wrote this when Aphex Twin was in diapers...no lie...

  • Nicely done! Love all those beautiful shots of Chicago. Nice tribute to a great band.

  • OMG...ty. I forgot about how great this is due to my love for Vienna.

  • fantastic track - fantastic band - fantastic Album

  • Love this track.

  • Yes, no musicians could even play this aswell anymore let alone write it. they rely to much on computers, and people like Simon Cowell have sucked the life and soul out of music.

  • great video. thanks.

  • Their music is so Haunting!!

  • Best version ever! Great video. If Ultravox was to release this as a single in the 80's... this version would of been great. Top 20 easy. This track is great as an opener as they proved in 2009... =)

  • I've spent half my life in music, majored in broadcasting, jocked, managed a record store for 3.5 years... RUSh became my favorite band, but Ultravox VIENNA has always been my favorite album, and likely influenced my future choices as I steered more towards professional-sounding techniques like Tangerine Dream and Blue Man Group. If anyone has any recommendations of the last 5 years, I'd enjoy hearing them.

Does everyone have the disc of Vienna with the song playlist in reverse order?

  • This video took me on a trip across the USA from NYC,Chicago and as far as one of my favourite US cities "Seattle"

  • wow..great scenes of chicago river and the "L"..this is a kickass video!

  • This is my favorite Ultravox son.......was also the last concerts opening, a great suprise for me.

  • one of my favorite Ultravox pieces, as stunning now as when I first got the Vienna album in the 80s . Video is brilliant. Thankyou for going to so much trouble.

  • @davogt6 hoe absolutely fantastic was the album "Vienna"? Especially since the entire album was written with a few weeks? Genius!!

  • love this song especially whe n the boys play it live. the sound goes right through you. neat video.

  • Masterpice;) The video the U-vox song :)

  • One of the best synth-instrumentals of all time. That and Depeche Mode's "Show No Fear."

  • What an experience; paradoxical this sound of music lives through today; I remember listening to it years ago; it can be released today and it still paints a picture a sound of sound of music we can all all enjoy today and the landscape is not that much changed... would you you agree?

  • Remember someone introducing me to this stuff. Like it. As well as other bands like vangelis.. and one that had a song called autobaun. Rush is still my fav. band. And Frozen ghost.

  • Visione preclusa..........................

  • How wonderful. Cant be better.

  • Outstanding!

  • This is the opening track on the Vienna album, to the person who said otherwise. Also check out New Order's Elegia for a wonderful 80s pop-synth instrumental. And btw, great work on the video, it is lovely.

  • Simply a fantastic instumental. So Emotive, as all of Ultravox's tracks were.

  • Good vid and tune however one thing: this piece is the 5th track from the Vienna album. Or, in vinyl-speak, the last song on Side 1.

If you could get a longer video, it would enhance the tune as the original music is 7 minutes but you knew that of course :)

  • Great video to a great song, good work.

  • Dear vuduegg - if I'd done that the video would not have synched with the track as well as it does.

  • This song started the great music of the 80's.

  • on the vinyl album there was a groove where astradyne was because l played this track over & over & over again, the hairs on the back of my neck are standing up now listening to it... great music, great memories

  • Yeah, Warren's drumming on this is world class. The synching of the initial drum kick at 0:51 with the visuals is inspired. Kudos, sir.

  • zarąbiste nagranie - można słuchać milion razy i zawsze coś nowego się w nim odkryje!

nie doceniałem je w młodych latach, teraz dopiero czuję jego głebię i magię.

    brawo Ultravox!

  • Fucking fabulous. My favorite Ultravox Lp/cd. Yes always thought the drumming was amazing. 5 stars.thanks for posting.

  • Fantastic track indeed..and Mr X is also fabulous: Ultravox a singles band? LOL

  • Top of all time in electronic music...Ultravox voice for ever...:)))

  • omg brilliant.... havent heard this in 25 years... and its just as amazing now as it was back then!! Nice video too :)

    Thanks!!

  • sounds very much like Neu! Neu!'75

  • Scratch that, I've finished. ;)

  • @nicholas74906 Would love to see the full version..Is it on here??best J:@)

  • World Trade Centers :D

    5*

    Ultravox is the key.

  • @peacauve I think you'll find it is actually Chicago and not the twin towers NY

  • it looks alot like it

  • awesome video and nothing can top this piece of music

  • So good!

  • Hopefully an N.A. tour is in the work's for this amazing band.

  • I certainly hope so mate!! woot!!

  • love this music i was at the Glasgow Secc and they started with this number it got even better brill!!!

  • a Stunner!

  • and I couldn't agree more neil1963creed...I'm sure an official video would be appreciated by the both of us.

  • or yeah ! good man fusad33 :D

  • I´v got - all - Albums ... on Vinyl ...

    Timeless ...

  • My dreams have come true, Midge will be in my country in a month's time and I will be there too of course :), come along to Krakow on Nov 22 whoever can

  • best instrumental of all time and good video too......just a shame it cuts off before the end

  • I envy all the fans who saw them live early this year, I wish I was there but couldn't. If only U-vox come to Poland, Stadion Śląski or anyplace else I will be there, with thousand of others I'm sure

  • Nice effort David, thanks.

  • This video is super super cool.

It's just perfect....'cept it ENDs too soon !

  • Cool...had not heard this in years...great band

  • ime 14 an i went to see them in manchester. It was my first concert. It was amazing (there most recent tour)

  • Wspanialy teledysk i muzyka.

  • super video

  • saw there dublin gig. 1st time id seen them, too young previously. I have been youtubing them each night since. Class stuff but fashion wasnt a word understood.

  • they still pump it out after all this time.i see them at notts.....my life is now complete

  • One of my favs by them. Are they going to tour US?

  • I saw Ultravox at Hammersmith last Friday 24th April 2009 - they opened with this track - it was ace (O;

If you want more 80's electro instrumentals check out "Simple Minds - theme for great cities"

    ti name but one (o;

    Enjoy!

  • Surely they can't just pack up and go their seperate ways again after this all too brief tour (!)

Too much of a good thing?

Not enough of a good thing!!

  • Just got back to the USA..Went and saw UV in Bournemouth BIC..They were brilliant!!!..I loved Astrodyne as the opening #... Glad they played RIE and your name has..Met some great people and thought how great they played..Very proffesional and disciplined in how they performed..Midge if you read this you kicked it old school!!!

  • love this song!

  • We are going to see them tonight Plymouth 27/4 cannot wait

  • What did you think ? I thought they were awesome and loved the final encore.

  • Brilliant, everyone up on there feet cheering clapping, I loved every min of it.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah I was there too! They did a great live version of this opening track! The highlight of the evening was when Midge Ure said " This is our first tour in 25 years. 2 changes, Folicles and when we toured in the 80's everyone was standing. I'm inviiting you all to stand! Everyone stood up, danced, clapped and cheered!!

  • Opps he said 23 years, not 25 lol...

  • Saw them last night (Friday) at the Birmingham Symphony Hall. So good that it was beyond words. The hall has the fifth best accoustics in the world and even in Midge's words it was brilliant. They did indeed start with this track and the whole show was full of obscure tracks and the popular. Midge Ure can still hold notes as good as ever. It was my 44th birthday present from my 34 year old wife who never found Ultravox, she got it last night and is listening to the Cd's in her car.

  • interesting to know Ultravox are still around and giving concerts - thats great

  • The start of this video is a bit scary with both towers still rasing up in the sky on the Manhattan skyline.

    Great song though!

Ultravox was and is still one of my favorits!

    //Sweden

  • Ultravox are opening with this track on their Reunion tour at the moment.

I'm off to see them at Bristol tomorrow - can't wait

  • I did have the Vienna cd myself when it first came out on cassette .I saw them play in dublin back in 82 and I was totally into the whole ultrvox mystic at the time . The music was very mysterious and haunting ,which suited the way I was feeling about life at the time .

  • Muito Bom, Very Good, este video registra um dia inteiro da decada de 80 em 3:45, e a musica é excelente.

  • Don't forget Warren Cann's drums. I think they really make this.

  • Tottally agree ,Warren drumming is superb

  • Billie Currie, what a hero, his influence on '79 The Pleasure Principle era of Gary Numan was profound..........

  • Another example of Conny Plank' genius at production duties.

  • Rest in peace the great Conrad Plank

  • He played a crucial role in the development of electronic music;besides his own recordings,he worked with Kraftwerk ,Devo,Eurythmics,Killing Joke,Ultravox to name a few.His style of production was credited by David Bowie as a strong influence in his Berlin trilogy

  • Good job well done, great track

  • thanks for ULTRAVOX........

  • thinwall81- This would be a classic opening track at the Return to Eden concert!! -

Perfect for an opener ,yes indeed

    Luxyaltz

  • You are right!

  • Looks like Chicago??

  • great job on converting this video, I would

like to get the orig. of JLP and put it on my

Ipod . but I never downloaded it before

they took it off Youtube. I'm pissed!!!

XXdmh can you help me get the Orig.

put me on as a friend and we can Hu

    Thanks man !

  • this is for you die hard uvox fans out there. my dad has HYMn 12 inch japanese 6 tracks with embossed prinitn on the vinyl. came out 1984, with insert of japanese and english lyrics signed by all t he band, any fuckers match that?

  • wicked video it actually goes with tune

  • This would be a classic opening track at the Return to Eden concert!!

  • agreed!

  • I have a strong feeling this is the video to Jean Luc Ponty's "Individual Choice"- have been trying to find it for ages. Can anyone confirm or deny my suspicion?

    Thx.

  • yes, this is the video for 'Individual Choice'. That video was here but got pulled recently.

  • Seeing them at Manchester on 14 April 2009. Hope to God they play Astradyne - its so atmospheric.

  • Love this song. Listened to it when I was getting in to Jean Michele Jarre, Vangelis and Mike Oldfield.

  • the greatest instrumental of all time and the video serves it well.

  • Who did this video? you are awesome! U-Vox could not have done better themselves! This is like something John Foxx would have done (this is the highest form of compliment)!

it really captures the spirit! As good as the 'one small day video'. Man, the 80's was a great decade for fun music, eh?

  • I live in the country and thi video reminds me of why, I live in the country lol...Fantastic track from ultravox....

  • One of their best instrumentals, if not their best! If Billy added vocals, this could of been a potenial single...

  • Bravo to whoever done this

  • no surprise, gary numan is just to good

  • Great track + nice vid, this track is heavily influenced by la dusseldorf, here's a couple of tracks to check out available on youtube:

    La dusseldorf - Dusseldorf

La dusseldorf - Cha Cha 2000 - stick with it, it is truly amazing once it gets going.

interestingly, the first track on side 2 of vienna is influenced by Kraftwerk, the same roots/studio as NEU!/La Dusseldorf.

  • Ok Ok. Here are some other 80's instrumentals that are pretty awesome.

'Space Suit' by They Might Be Giants

    'Timestar' by After The Fire

audio of both should be on youtube. check them out!

  • Yea, Vangelis is cool. Let me know which ones you haven't heard and I'll try to get them for you.

  • Very beautyfull.....

don't wanna kick in open doors but,

It made me think of »II«

    How beautyfull it might look....

these are very harsh places too./

  • I forgot how good this track was. Thanks for uploading.

  • Amazing piece of music.

People argue about who was better, John or Midge.

The answer is BILLIE. It was his sound that made Ultravox great.

  • Top 5 most awesome synthesized 80's instrumentals:

    1. Astradyne- Ultravox

    2. Nothing to Fear- Depeche Mode

    3. D.N.A.- A Flock of Seagulls

    4. Another Heart Breaks- E.L.O.

    5. Sparks In the Dark- Sparks

  • Great track for a movie!

  • one of the best instrumentals of all time.

  • Billy Currie at his brilliant best on the violin. Superb.

  • when i saw then live about 5 times...billy currie was awesome...

i never caught visage live though....visage only toured after they went out of the charts...maybe because steve strange couldnt sing live..

  • Brilliant piece of music. Great opening track for a superb album - Vienna. Thanks for posting, and is there any chance of posting the rest?

  • Sorry. This was the only track I synced a video to.

  • No worries. I think the video goes brilliantly with the music. Great job!

  • Vid cuts off way too early. Missed the best part of this track. What happened????

  • Unfortunately the video was shorter than the track. I also lost a few seconds at the start syncing it.

  • @xxdmh you could have slowed it down a bit to fit...i don't anyone would have notived...8-)

  • One of the most underated bands ever.

    Brilliant music.

  • Cool!!

  • where is this city it looks crap but where is it

  • It's Chicago, and it's a great city.

  • Chicago is a great city to fly into or up the lakeshore at night. Some of the aerial scenes shown in the video would cost you your pilot's license today.

The contrast of the unlit lake, the particular color of the chicago streetlights, and the radial angled streets combined with the square north/south east/west streets, and the centralization of the tall buildings to the downtown and north shore areas really makes for some beautiful visuals at night. Even Seattle or SFO can't beat this.

  • Never heard this one from Ultravox before excellent vid.

  • Incredible video and flyover of the Urban World !

  • This sounded a lot like Flock of Seagulls in my ears. This particular song i mean.

  • I saw Ultravox at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium back in about 1980. Check this out: the opening act was the Suburban Lawns, followed immediately by a very terse and pissed off Stan Ridgeway and Wall of Voodoo. Two great bands opened the show only to be followed by the best post Foxx Ultravox concert I ever experienced. It was tremendous! And when UV played Astradyne the crowd went ballistic. Forget Sleepwalk, New Europeans and Passing Strangers. Give me Astradyne first anyday. Great song...

  • Awesome job, but you cut way too much of the tune off at the end.

  • Unfortunately the video was shorter than the song so i had no option.

  • I love what you've done with the song, but where's the rest of the music? I recall that the song goes on for another minute and a half or so. Who cares about more video, I'd love to hear the rest of the song.

  • Unfortunately the video was shorter than the song so i had no option.

  • Loved this track ever since it came out. Ripped off by I tunes with this track. It is the only track you can't download by itself. They make you buy the whole album and then they won't let you download it onto your MP3 player unless it is an I Pod. Enough bitching. I ish there was more music like this around. Any suggestions

  • Yeah, invent a time machine . . .

  • Check out Billy Currie's Transportation album if you like this...lots more like it.

  • a great album !!!

  • What a blast from the past - wow how good is this ?

  • Fantasic. Ultravox rocked

  • Love this tune . nice vid to go with it .

  • First half of this video contains scenes from Chicago!... Beautiful city!...

  • This song is much more fitting with the visuals than the original song for this video was

  • Great track. Get a bit fed up with those who moan about the Ure era Ultravox being rubbish. Yes, I agree that the Foxx era was better but it doesn't mean this stuff wasn't good. You can like both, and I and many others do! There. I said it!!

  • i love this too,and mr x

  • best song ever recorded from the era !!!

  • brillllllllllllllllllllliant:-)

  • I thought i was the only one out there who loves this track. Quite touching to read everyone's comments. My funeral track too!

I RECOMMEND YOU Check out the original on Vienna album. ALSO check out a live version of this track on 'Ultravox Live' BBC CD, released early 90's (last track on album for ref). This version is equally impressive.

Off to listen to Astradyne, full blast!

  • Absolutely fantastic track but this is only 1/2 of the album megga tune version along with Mr X gotta be palyed full volume to appreciate it too its max.

  • MR X!!! Favorite song off that album. OH and Western Promise!

  • Great music. Well done on the video. If u listen to this on the vienna album listen to it loud along with western promise off the same album, outstanding sound.

  • positive , serious , melodic ....

    just brillant ....

    miss the new romantic years..

    thank you mr ure

  • Yes!!! And Yes Again!!!

  • This track lasts a total of nine minutes on the CD I have. Has anyone posted the full version on this site, or thought of doing so ?

  • Do we remember "Oh my Visage" (by Visage)

same sound.. great music this is

  • written by the same guy

  • Great video to this dramatic instumental -

reminds me of parts of Koyaanisqatsi film !

  • Ohhh yea, when he worked with producer, Umawhdkaafekfbvbgf
