How can you say "Recurves are dying out",? when nearly all beginners are first taught, in this country, anyway, to shoot first with a recurve and why then is the recurve bow the only dicipline currently allowed during the olympic games ( although compound is being included as a demonstration sport in 2012)?
Exactly, recurve is the training bow type for beginners, once they have learned how to shoot they can move on to the pro bow type.
The olympic games, due to their restrictions on numbers of disciplines, does not reflect current sporting trends well. It is interesting though how the olympics is supposed to be for "amateur" athletes; one could almost say that recurve is for amateurs and compound is for pros?
Recurve requires more skill than compound as they do not allow magnifiyng sights or rear 'peep' sights and do not have a 'let off' making it easier to hold a high draw weight at full draw. These advantages detract from the sport which is why they are excluded from the olympics. Most 'Pro' archers only exist in the states and recurve is widley accepted as the more traditional dicipline. There are many 'Pro' archers who shoot recurve so your polarised argument does not have any credibility!
There are many more recurves than compound so where is the evidence that recurves are dying out? By your argument, the more traditional bows such as the English longbow, american flatbow (AFB), Hungarian horsebow and various asian variants, and the japanese Kyudo bow should have died out long ago, Yet they are all still in common use! Compound Bows will never take over the sport completely as you seem to suggest!
@roythearcher Can you explain why a bow with let off and a rear peep sight detracts from the sport? I wonder how they are advantages if all of your competition are shooting the same type of equipment? I mean, I've shot competition for the most part of 18 years, Lead the NFAA Nationals for a day and it still comes down to the ability to make the shot under pressure. It doesn't matter what division or equipment you are using. Now if you are a purist think about this... next post
@TheGreatJohnny8 Read my post again, I believe I explain everything and I stand by what I say.... and so does the Olympic inclusion committee from what I gather....
@roythearcher :continued: What would happen out favorite sport if we eliminated compound bows altogether because of the "advantages" compounds bring. There wouldn't be archery. At some point technology has to advance. Recurve bows have carbon limbs now correct? doesn't that give that give them and advantage? I guess not ... you still have toe make the shot .. and thats all it should be no matter what bow you are using.
@nicaraguajournal keep your retarded opinions to yourself ! I shot in the junior euronations last month' where there was 6 male compound shooters and about 15 male recurve, and in the female section there was about 9 recurve and only 1 compound shooter. and allmost ever archery olympian is a full time pro that does archery for a living. you clearly are not an archer and know nothing about the sport. and please, nobody take this guy seriously!!
Why are they dropping the bow after shooting?
