Virén's '72 Olympic 5K victory came from his careful running of almost all the bends (curves) near the inner edge of the first lane, which spared him tens of metres compared to his chief rival Steve Prefontaine-United States. Prefontaine gave Virén a handicap of over forty metres at the 1972 Olympics 5,000 metres. Prefontaine actually ran a 5K distance faster than Viren, but the 40 metres handicap gave Viren the victory. This fact makes it difficult to label Viren a faster runner.
i ran my first 5km race in 24:31 as a 9 year old girl! I started running in the end of September of 2011 so about 2 and a half months. my goal is to run it in 18:00-19:00 my dad was a runner and he told me about Pre and I want to run at Oregon like him in 9 more years
In the time it took us to waste time wanting to run...Steve Prefontaine could have ran a 3:59.2 mile...Pre was a runner...nothing more..nothing less. PRE LIVES
I joined cross country this year. I was second best freshman on our team and first race I came in 8th out of 150. Then I watched a movie about Steve prefontaine. Without limits. I was really inspired and I won the next cross country race. I ran a PR. Of 15:58.84 and second place guy behind me from MLK ran a 16:27.32 I was so proud of myself. And I owe it all to pre.
This is probably one of the greatest YouTube videos because of this song and how it was so brilliantly done (the compilation). Thank you. It seems this music is perfect because of the words and the time it came from- the era of the Great Steve Prefontaine. And I think runners to this day run to this song- motivated like never before.
Wanna know what running shoe to get? Problem solved with the new iPhone Application called ‘Wet Test’ on iTunes. If there’s a shoe for you we will find it.
To think of some of the brutal workouts he must have done on that Oregon track, he inspired millions and continues to do so. There's no kind of natural ability that creates something like Steve Prefontaine. That's what is so great about him. He created who he is out of pure guts and determination. My coach always used to say, "If you don't see the white light then you can keep going." I think he lived by that
He is my hero becuase, yes i might never be as fast as him or even close but no matter what he has tought me if you have balls enough to run your heart out You will never lose! all us runners look up to you and i am going to strive to be like you:)
my first ever Cross country was a 5k and I ended up running a 18:36 and my coachw as yelling at me the whole race to slow down that I was going to die.
At the end I got 18th out of 140 and one of the other school coaches asked me if I wanted to Steve Prefontaine or something so I had to look him up.. Such an inspiration!
@Unhuman6 Actually, he was more or less making a reference to the fact that you ran far beyond your limits and ran well below your optimal performance. I have to say though that I was not all that different in my first ever XC race...
@Unhuman6 If you ran your first cross-country 5k in 18:36, you are very talented. You should continue to apply yourself - run hills helped me to improve in a hurry. Keep up the good work. I would be happy to offer advice and encouragement if you need it.
@Eeescape5FPCHS Cross country, besides fitness gains, only rewards the three people who come in first and one team who triumphs over the rest... a small percentage are rewarded, the rest are either disappointed or happy that it's over. But that's just my opinion, and I recommend XC to anybody, but not so much to zealots as cross country can destroy your life... as it almost did mine.
I can't run 18 min 3 mile. 21 is the best so far. When I ran 21 one time I felt like I was a flying bird, like an out of body experience I shocked myself when the time was read back to me. I can imagine what PreF felt like too
Pre is a great inspiration for runners everywhere.this video inspired me to run my hardest the next time I run.The music also gives the video an inspirational feel to it.To all runners out there, always watch inspirational videos about running it keeps u motivated and study the best of the best, which Pre is one of them.I did'nt have no one to push me but I still manage to run a 10:08 2 mile without hardly any coaching.U can do anything u put your mind to.Just believe in yourself and keep pushin
This is my favourite thing on You Tube. thanks very much for taking the time to put it together and post it. I especailly love the parts aroun 1.50 when the first chorus comes in. I love Steve more every year.
There will NEVER EVER BE ANOTHER PRE!!! There will be great runners but he surpassed that by a longshot...and alot of the AAU guys making big bucks today and thank Pre!!!!
no one's ever going to surpass him. regardless of performance...like pre said "I don't just go out there and run. I like to give people watching something exciting."
@MarqueeMagic You must be a Marine too, You must be Capt T. even thought I fall behind, trust me I am doing the best i can. I can't run 18 min 3 mile. 21 is the best so far. When I ran 21 one time I felt like I was a flying bird, like an out of body experience I shocked myself when the time was read back to me. I can imagine what PreF felt like too
@armywar30 Never say can't buddy, if you allow yourself to do all that you do as if there is no way anyone or anything could place any limits on you (that's including yourself) the feats we are capable of are epic. Keep pushing yourself and one day you will run 3 miles in 18 min. Having a goal and overcoming the obstacles that occur while on the path towards acheiving that goal shows perseverance. "Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up everytime we fail." - Emerson
Great job! Pre is still, my greatest athletic hero of all time, probably influenced my own life in more ways than I realize. What a role model, what an attitude! . We're almost the same age, both 50% German. And I love the duration of this video (3:59). God bless Pre!
his VO2 max was only 70, yet he was excellent runner, coudl ahve been lactate threshold... he oculd just have easily been a college wrestler...also eny1 know what he died from??
I followed Pre when I was in H.S. in Oregon in the early 1970s. In May of 1974 when I went to State in the 880, held in Eugene, Oregon at the U of O, I was warming up in the warm up area. Running up next to me was this guy, he says ...hi. I look over and it was Pre. We ran together for about 50 yards, then he peeled off. That made my day, and was the highlight of my High School running career. My team mates yelled "You ran with Pre!" Sadly, a year later almost to the day, Pre was killed.
no no tampoco tampoco jaja... te puedo nombrar 10 atletas mejores que el en este momento, pero es un grande por su fuerza mental, su autoestima y claro por sus grandes tiempos
One of the answers to the age old question: "If you could go back in history and meet three people, who would they be?". For me, one would be Pre. No one better, ever.
Thanks for sharing this. To do anything less than keep the memory of Pre alive is to sacrifice the gift.
That is not the correct spelling of Bannister. Maybe he is not really who you would like to meet. Besides, he is still kicking. He was also willing to stop running for medicine, but glory and the four minute mile eluded academics. I don't know if Roger Bannister loved running even half as much as Steve Prefontaine; but he was very talented indeed.
Yeah thanks for the correction...I can't spell very well for anything. I use to spell Prefontaine without the e at the end. Pretty much I just never read when I was young because I have a type of vision problem that makes reading very hard for me, but I've gotten help for that. I do wish he would have kept running even if not competitively but just the fact that he was the first to go sub 4 is amazing. I run 5:57 mile and that just seems beyond me. I have respect for anyone that can break 4.
Hayward Field is the Mecca for Track and Field. I will finally get to visit it next year. I don't think America fully understands what an icon PRE was and still is. PRE LIVES in us all, and he will remain in our hearts forever. TO GIVE ANYTHING LESS THAN YOUR BEST IS TO SACRIFICE THE GIFT---STEV PREFONTAINE
thats amazing, its a shame he died, but think by dieing he inspred millions of us to get off our asses and try to be as good as him (even though that can never b done) but very inspirational love it
I wasn't saying Hall is a better runner than Pre. I'm just saying that after seeing Hall's preformance at the olympic trials I was very impressed and given hope for the future of American running. Anyway, great video. Stop Pre!
Virén's '72 Olympic 5K victory came from his careful running of almost all the bends (curves) near the inner edge of the first lane, which spared him tens of metres compared to his chief rival Steve Prefontaine-United States. I wasn't saying Hall is a better runner than Pre. I'm just saying that after seeing Hall's preformance at the olympic trials I was very impressed and given hope for the future of American running. Anyway, great video. Stop Pre!
