  • i feel sorry for the headphone people.. haha

  • you how about focus?

  • Yep!

same problem... with my White Macbook Unibody...

  • @trenzz999 Me too! i hate it but it is a different company

  • Same thing happened to me but uni body aluminum. the bottom and side of the base is all scratched. Like how the case looks but didn't protect. My friend has had the same mac the same amount of time and no case and his isn't scratched.

  • Lol, good speck didnt give you "damages". Americans like to sue for nothing, we know, but this is just ridiculous!

  • This is why I got the incase sleeve because plastic casing scratches the laptop. And it costs like 40$ in target but the mony is well worth it because it doesn't scratch the laptop and protect it really well against falls.

  • that happened to mine too. i only now by leather casing. never buy plastic caseing anymore cuz speck sucks

  • u retard ur suppose 2 clean it like every 3 weeks

  • OHSHIT BETTER TAKE THIS THING OFF OF MY MACBOOK PRO

  • @TheGodlyAsian Did it scratch your macbook pro? I am thinking about buying this case.

  • @JasonAnomaly Nope but it broke the hinge. Don't buy it.

  • the spots on your computer are probably because you got something on your case and it also just happened to sneak through the vents

  • Should have got a metal MacBook or MacBook Pro. The plastic MacBooks always get more scratches even without cases.

  • i got mine for 15 and i didnt even fit

  • I guess it depends what you want protection from. When you're living lets say, out of a backpack, a case that protects from crushing would be nice regardless of the cosmetic blemishes it may leave.

  • Well next time maybe READ the instructions before jumping right in. If you'd done that this wouldn't have happened. If you pay 50$ for something I would hope you read the instructions. Don't blame speck blame yourself.

  • I guess you didn't realize that you need to take the macbook out of the case and clean it about once a week.. speck even says to do it so that dust that gets trapped doesn't end up scratching it... maybe you should take better care of your stuff rather than blaming speck and wanting money for repairs

  • omg mine too! like foreal now my macbook has scratches too :(

  • what did you expect, This happens all the time no matter the gadget

  • prob is that peps think they can put this on and for get the bag carry this round and outside and stash it any were an devery thing will be ok dirt gets in i keep my 13 and 17 with the speck on and in a neoprene slip try that oh and clean it out every week

  • damn...how often did you clean the case...probably never by the looks of it

  • @dollarbill125

Agreed... I have a Speck Seethru Satin on my Macbook Pro and take it off once or twice a week to give it a quick dusting and wipe down. By the looks of the marks left by the vent holes on that white Mac it looks like it had been installed for a long time. Speck specifically states in their directions for the cases that you need to periodically remove and clean your Mac to prevent damages just like these.

  • @djdoyle exactly she should've did her research and read the directions more carefully...I got my macbook pro last week and decided not to buy a speck case and went with a incase neoprene case instead...the macbook pro looked sexy as hell when i first took it out the box that i wasn't even in the mood to risk its looks with a speck case even though I know i would remember to clean it regularly

  • I own this case and do agree. but its no way near as bad as that. it says to clean out aleast once a week i do that twice and also if i see any debre trapt. i love this case and feel as if people are blaming the company for something they have only caused them selves. if you had cleaned it as it stated on the packet then you would probably have a quarter of the damage you have now. nobody's fault that its dirty but your own and if i was working for speck this would be my argument against you lot

  • @GarryBacon That happened to me Lol never clean it so thanks i'll clean it

  • This is what happens when you:

    Buy pointlessly glossy items

    Overpay for unnecessary accessories

  • i feel you...i had a speck cover for my post october macbook and trying to remove the top part caused me to scratch the top sides of my macbook

  • Okay folks, time for my semi-annual comment: READ THE COMMENTS PEEPS. 1) My speck case came with no instructions to wipe it.

    2) Speck sent me a scratch-fixer which didn't.

    3) the replacement case scratched DESPITE me wiping the laptop every day.

    4) Speck's service was good and polite, but no follow-through.

    5) Don't buy the case if scratches matter to you. It scratches, and there's no way to fix it.

  • Duh u gotta wipe of the dirt inside, it wont happen if you do that

  • whan your lap top lid is scrached or crached is it serious pls respond?

  • that really sucks I was gonna get one too. did you get your money??

  • why does this matter? because you paid an extra 1000 dollars for a mac... and only paid 50 dollars for a laptop case... anything with an apple on it scratches like a bitch... no offense its true

  • boo hoo who gives a fuck

  • This probably happend because she did not take it off and clean it

I had a white MacBook and used 1 of those cases and nothing happend to is so when I bought a MacBook pro I imediatly got a speck case

    I love the cases

  • 1 star for the loud ass cheer shit.

  • haha you are right. this was my first iMovie.

  • @josiejose also, one star for sounding super whiny and privileged

  • can it scratch the unibody ones?

  • These cases are total crap. I had one too for both of my mac laptops and after only a few days I had to clean them. Yeah, they say to keep them clean to prevent scratches but doesn't that defeat the purpose? I shouldn't have to repeatedly clean these things when the reason I bought them was to prevent scratches! They did plenty of damage to mine. I chose to put a vinyl sticker on them both now. They protect way better. Not a single scratch since.

  • Hear hear! I totally agree.

    What type of vinyl sticker?

  • These cases are designed to protect the laptop, but there are openings where things like dust can enter. The scratches are a result of not following the directions speck gives its customers, if you didnt receive directions with your case they have them on their website, but they clearly state that the lack of regular cleaning of the case will result in scratches. If you are putting something on a 1000+ computer you should research that product before you put it on so you can use it properly

  • I got one of these cases to keep my MacBook Pro in perfect condition, but after removing it after a few weeks of use I discovered that it put a bunch of small scratches in the aluminum. Small bits of dirt / sand material got between the case and laptop and scratched it up. It was in a clean office, but over time that will happen anywhere. Not cool!

  • didn't the instructions say to make sure you clean the macbook every once in a while so it can prevent the spots?

    just making sure..

  • i love the speck cases. i have the aluminum macbook and they work fantastic on it. as far as i can tell, the white macbook is a scratch magnet, and eventually gets dirty unless u lock it up in a quality hardshell, which takes away from the nice white look. my advice is to get a sleeve. that way, you have protection during transportation and while you aren't using the computer

  • I agree i just got mine and so far I have had no problems on my aluminum macbook, I used to have a white macbook and it scratched so easily I think just about anything will scratch it lol but so for this is a good case : )

  • I agree - the white ones scratch easily, but I did find this one added to the problem because it trapped dirt next to the case and sort of ground it in there. I now use a sleeve, and I have a unibody aluminum one now so it's a lot better.

  • @RB5418 i have an alluminium macbook pro and it has been scratched the hell out of by speck*

  • This is the problem with the stupid cases that people make... ITS NOT CoOL!!! i really hope you got a refund. Stupid speck... i wont buy one now. I have the same problem with my iphone but its a different brand case... sad stuff man... :(

  • Speck did the same to my iphone, the case was slightly too big and my iphone slid around a bit within the case causing hundreds of small chips on each of the four corners.

Did Speck give you a refund?

  • they offered a refund or to replace the speck case, but I was annoyed because it caused permanent damage to the case, shouldn't they offer to replace or repair? Anyway, I didn't pursue it, I just decided to get a different case and cut my losses.

  • @josiejose May I ask what other case you bought? I have the aluminum unibody macbook pro and have been contemplating whether or not to buy speck. I'm hoping I get better results than you since the laptops are built differently. I'm scared. Thanks for bringing awareness.

  • the same thing happened to my macbook, i wasn't able to get a refund for my speck case but i wouldn't recommend purchasing a clear hard shell speck case to anyone

  • Wow! I was considering buying a Speck case for my MacBook (the aluminium model) but after seeing this I'm a little wary!

  • Speck Shells actually make the scratches much worse than if you didn't use the shell. They appear well made, but they do not seal against the laptop, so dust gets in, and the barely noticeable flex in the case, rubs the particles into the laptop finish, literally grinding it off. It's hard to see on a glossy finish, but on my grey finish you can see. They only agreed to a refund but not to anything extra. so far. This is probably part of why Speck is rated F by the Better business bureau

  • Wow it looks like you actually watched the video. Thanks! I'm sure you can see how many people (who most likely have no Speck shells themselves) have just dismissed it out of hand. I don't know what to say, Speck admitted it to me, and I have the permanant scratch marks in my laptop to prove it - despite having cleaned it regularly as they suggested (but neglected to include on the instruction sheet).

  • Greeeeeeeeeeeeeed

  • holy shit dude, these arent scratches. Under the laptop where the vents of the case were? Thats dust, drama queen.

  • wow I love that you can tell that from a video while I have spent a couple of hours going at it with the plastic scratch fixer that speck sent me to fix the problem which... DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEM.

  • i have an "incase" laptop case and it has holes at the bottom. when i took my case off just now it had the same marks. it took me about 30 seconds to wipe it off tho. i just bought a speck case and am now reading all this

i think think if the problem is dust getting in, ive heard they reccommend you take your case off frequently and clean it out.

  • I got a techshell hard case after I saw this video. The tech shells don't have all those vents on the bottom (they don't have any). What a shame I hope that piece of crap company buys you a new laptop. I would be soooo pissed!

  • Doesn't your laptop overheat without those vents in the bottom? I was under the impression those were essential to the workings of the case and laptop.

Unfortunately they didn't buy me a new laptop - they did send me a new case (o great!) and some plastic repair solvent that is supposed to remove scratches but didn't work well.

  • actually..the heat doesnt come out of the bottom. it comes out from the sides. speck thinks that more holes means more ventilation, they are wrong.

  • Thank you , i was gonna buy one, but i think im going to go with the invisible shield.

  • Be wary about invisible shield, the reason you get a life time warrant is because it's impossible to keep the corners from coming up and peeling off.

I've used Zagg invisible shied for a blackberry curve, ipod touch, iphone, and my macbook. 3 of the 4 were installed by Zagg employees and still the corners came up and I have to get them replaced.

  • buy the invisible shield for mac trust me you wont regret it....and it comes with a lifetime warranty ....

  • I've just reviewed the Speck Satin Macbook case (their new model apparently) and I am not liking it one bit. I'll try and post the two videos of it via 'video response' to your video.

  • Thanks for posting this up. If you do a search, a lot of people have been complaining about this product. Removal of this stupid thing can give you plenty of scratches too and hard to remove this too.

  • Thankyou, I just bought a new Macbook Pro, and now will avoid Speck products. Instead I will use a Mactruck or a RhinoSkin.

Again thankyou, you saved me a lot grief...

  • Wow - I really hope that all the trolls who watch this video will read your comment - and the comments of others who have had EXPERIENCE with the product. You should contact speck and tell them your experience. Don't accept a replacement product - it doesn't get any better with a new case. They have started putting warnings to clean your computer but I think you'd have to clean it every day to avoid the type of scratches this product leaves.

  • omg you are just stupid you just have to clean it. you imbecile!

    - the fairy of golds and silvers

  • well, ragnar, why don't buy a certified protection case from apple when u first got the case.

  • Hey, does anyone know if the Speck see through cover fits for any other laptops other than Mac? I have a 15.4' Dell and wanted to know because I need a cool, slick cover for my laptop

  • no, there made for macbooks.

  • they make cases for other brands too...

  • Hi Ragnar,

I don't think you'll have troubles with an MBP. They're aluminum, and so the scuffs aren't as bad and don't look like much from what I can tell.

I think my position on buying new Speck products is that one shouldn't buy them expecting protection of your laptop, but they look really cool!

  • thanks for the heads-up Josie.

Has anyone had similar experiences with a MacBook Pro and Speck case? I'll be purchasing a Speck case with my MBP in hopes that it will preserve the quality and resell value. I won't if there is any chance that it'll leave marks and scuffs.

  • The third usage guideline on the products packaging states.

"regularly remove the SeeThru Case from your MacBook, gently clean you MacBook and re-attach. A clean surface prevents the build up of unwanted debris between the surface of the MacBook and SeeThru that could potentially scratch the MacBook."

Next time read something before using it!!!

  • oy. I really wish that people would look at the date videos were posted, and read some of the other comments before they (you) post stuff like this.

Several other wise guys have tried to point out the same thing - and to each I say, I bought my speck product from a distributor at a time when speck did not provide instructions (other than assembly) in the packaging. Because of this, Speck gave me a total replacement of the product and something to remedy the scratches.

  • also - I have two friends who have bought speck macbook covers recently (within the last 4 months) and both did not receive instructions in their packages like you did. Speck has some issues with their continuity in packaging and labelling obviously, but their customer service is fantastic.

Apple has also admitted that their first edition macbooks (which mine is) had substandard cases which scratched easily and cracked a lot. I have certainly found that.

  • you are supposed to take the case off every couple of weeks to clean the computer and the case. Speck provided this information with the case when you bought it. I have a speck seethru for my MacBook Pro and it works great. You can't hold Speck accountable for your failure to head the instructions.

  • HA I used to have a white MacBook and a red Speck See-thru case! It didn't cause that much damage though, but there were some scratches. I upgraded to a MacBook Pro a few weeks ago (Best computer ever!) and got a green speck case for it. Which shouldn't cause too much damage since the MacBook Pro has aluminum casing.

  • i bought a brand new macbook about a month ago along with an orange speck case, and i haven't taken the case off yet because i'm scared! i know there's some dirt in there and if i take it off wrong maybe i'll make it worse.... crap! i don't like this thing.

  • Anail - you HAVE to take the case off or it will damage your macbook. It seems hard but after repeated removals from my laptop it never left marks - the ONLY marks it left were from dirt getting trapped between the case and the laptop (which were substantial, and even worse after Speck replaced my case) - REGARDLESS of how often I cleaned my laptop!

  • WOW! I'm buying a new laptop and am really grateful for your post: you saved me a lot of anger and disappointment. I hope people read your post before buying one of these cool-looking, but obviously substandard products. Good luck with getting Speck to make it right. I would contact computer magazines to let them know your experience. Also, if you still have the case, consider listing it on eBay and/or Amazon with a description of the damage it caused your expensive laptop.

  • Hey everyone - I've found that the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser works better than even the expensive scratch removing product that Speck sends you if their case damages your MacBook. Seriously - it won't remove the scratches, but takes the colour right out of them so that you can't even tell they are there. No scrubbing, nothing! So tell Speck you think their product is crap, but then go buy a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser - it'll help.

  • did the same thing to mine i hate that case it put a 2 inch scratch on my laptop

  • Thanks. I guess I won't get this case for my laptop...

  • I bought a Speck case around 3 weeks ago to "protect" my MacBook and recently started noticing all these scratches...so I decided to take my case off and sure enough, there were all these tiny scratches.... I'm so disappointed. What a waste of money!! :((

  • thank man for ur advice

  • wt shiuld ido i just got this mac 2 weeks ago and with this case my laptop got all scratched help me resolve this problem

  • Read the rest of the comments and you'll see the rest of the story.

Contact Speck immediately, tell them what has happened, and tell them you have found out from other people online what this is a product problem. Take the case off immediately and get a different one. (there are some suggestions in the comments below for different products). Use the product Speck recommends to buff out the scratches, but don't expect much.

  • Forgot to mention, if speck offers you a replacement cover of the same type, don't take it. Request one of their soft shells, sleeves or the one that looks like a converse shoe.

  • I just had something worse happen; dropped my Macbook Pro from desk height level, and my Speck case fractured along the corner and didn't protect my laptop! The corner is totally dented and the Speck case shattered on touching the floor. I am going to contact them and perhaps make a video--the claims that this product protects your laptop are exaggerated.

  • not sure that this product has ever been advertised to be that shock absorbent. in fact, very few cases are to that degree. I always understood it to be merely a scratch protector - which is why it was such a rude awakening when I found that it scratched my macbook!

  • Thanks for sharing. I just bought a macbook with a blue techshell... Really don't hope it'll ruin the book's appearance.

  • Some of the other commenters have said that techshells are designed differently to avoid this problem. you might be fine. Just keep an eye on it, keep your laptop clean and check often.

  • Haha, boohooo. They only should pay for repairs and give you a refund for the case.

  • Geez. I might take this video down, for all the people who come in and give me flack for putting my own experience up on YouTube without reading the comments and discovering that it's already been dealt with.

In the end - they sent me another case, and some stuff they thought would fix the problem. It helped a bit, but not completely. I've just decided to lump it and not use the (2nd) case anymore.

  • Did you have apple care?

  • yes - I do, and it's not covered under applecare because it was caused by a third-party product.

  • I have a red speck laptop case too, had it since last summer. Maybe because i have a macbook pro, the case was made differently, but it has protected it fine. The only thing that gets in the case is the occaisional hair which just looks wierd. As for the dirt left by the slots on the bottom, it wipes off with a damp cloth.. I think it might just be the macbook version, not the pro.

  • I think you are right - but it's because the macbookpro is made of aluminum or some other metal. It does not scratch as easily as plastic, and does not show the dirt as well under the Speck case. Anyway, good to hear that your case is serving you well!

  • Hi everyone,

I'm the author of this video, and I'm pleased to say that Speck got back to me (finally) and offered to send me a product that would remedy the problem, and a new case of my choice.

It remains to be seen whether the product they are sending will fix the problem (it should), but I REALLY appreciate good customer service.

    Thanks, speck!!

  • You have no argumet. Speck BLATANTLY states ont he packaging that you need to occasionally remove the case and clean out dust and debris. If you do not do this, the debris collects and scratches the computer in ways that do not look like regular wear and tear. Why does this happen? Because the particles never get out of the case once they go in if you don't clean them out.

  • Actually, according to the literature I got with the case itself back in January, there was no information about cleaning it out. I think they only recently began to include that advice to their customers.

But hey, thanks for being rude anyway.

  • "Thanks for being rude anyway"

I was not being rude... I was simply stating why this happened to your MacBook. Get some iClean and clean it up, should look fine.

  • Speck sent me a special product that was supposed to get rid of the scratches. It's used usually for aircraft windshields. Unfortunately, it's not completely successful at removing scratches on my macbook. I gave up after awhile - it buffed it up a bit though.

  • Oh, and I'd also like to mention that with the new case that speck sent me, packaging at all, there was not a single mention of removing the case occasionally to clean it out. The first I heard of that was when you commented on it, and when I mentioned it to speck they agreed it was a good idea. Beware speck users, clean your laptop regularly!

  • Wow, thanks for the vid...I was about to buy one of these! I guess I'm better off keeping the MacBook naked.

  • Yeah, I know - I need to get something more protective - but I'm a little annoyed because the case I bought from Speck claimed to be protective but instead was damaging. Either redesign the product or stop claiming it is protective!

  • You need to get a real case for your laptop. Get a techshell. techshell com

  • yeah, I looked up techshell on youtube, and it's the same product as speck, just a different name. So be careful!

  • Give it a rest already, my techshell is fine and it may look like the same product but it's not. This has never been reported on a techshell. I will send you a link where it states to remove the case and clean periodically because it IS there.

Either way, move on... You scratched up your macbook months ago, is this all you've been concerned about the entire time?

  • ha! happily, not. I just rediscovered the post today when someone commented on it.

No need to get your knickers in a twist!

  • me too... Lol

  • wow thats crazy... i never had any problems with my techshell. look it up!

  • wow im sorry thats really terrible, and to think i was going to buy one of those for my macbook pro i just bought...

  • booooooooooo!

  • Fucking ridiculus, you should get them to buy you a brand new macbook.
