Apollo wasn't done in 3 years ; The program lasted from 1961 to 1973, or about 12 years. It could be done again, but would require a similar commitment of time and resources (about 150-170 billion dollars), since you'd need to design, manufacture and flight test entirely new hardware.

It has a resolution of 0.5 metres per pixel, about what the KH-11 spy satellites manage, except taken with far smaller cameras (since the KH sats are essentially huge space telescopes, while the LRO is a far smaller probe that also carries other scientific instruments that take up space).
The fact you have no idea what you're talking about doesn't mean NASA is lying.

Because the Moon has become tidally locked to the Earth, it rotates on its axis at the same speed that it orbits the Earth, hence only one side is always visible. Apollo wasn't done in 3 years ; The program lasted from 1961 to 1973, or about 12 years. It could be done again, but would require a similar commitment of time and resources (about 150-170 billion dollars), since you'd need to design, manufacture and flight test entirely new hardware.

@islandbuoy4 We need to make new hardware because there are no spaceworthy Apollo ships just laying around for people to use. So you need to produce new ones, but you can't just take plans drafted in the 60s and use them wholesale, since a lot has changed in the way things work.
At the very least you'd have to rework the Saturn V/Apollo blueprints into CAD/CAM and produce new sets of tooling to make them. Which will take time and manpower and MONEY the US doesn't want to spend.

Between '51 and '66, Soviets shot over 20 dogs off on rockets, often with no intention of recovering the animals. Yes, if we count the two biggest rocket catastrophes, then the death toll is way higher for the USSR, but the original point of contention was about astronauts and cosmonauts, was it not? In that, the both programs are comparable. Except for the two Shuttle deaths the US also lost a number of people, all before the lunar program was concluded.

@shoogdon You would notice the USSR did not try to hide the Nedelin catastrophe, because they understood it's pointless to try and cover up deaths (since people have families and friends who will ask inconvenient questions and there's thousands of witnesses who just won't stay silent). It's better to admit they died and glorify the victims into Heroes Of The Soviet Union, because then nobody can accuse you of lying.

They also had the ability to hide this, with state-run press. Even the current Russian Federation can not account for all the cover-ups. Soviets routinely changed the press version of space flights depending on whether they were succesful, after the fact as needed.

At most they lied about details and cleverly concealed little things, like the fact Gagarin ejected from his capsule before landing, or that no, the three-man Voshkhod flight wasn't designed to be done without spacesuits, but there was just no space to wear them, etc.
In total, USSR lost 4 cosmonauts during missions and 2 in training accidents. The US lost 8 astronauts in training, 14 on missions.

For starters, the Soviets never put a chimp in space, let alone the first. They did dogs, the U.S. did monkeys and chimps. The Soviets, in their haste of achieving the early space firsts, also killed a lot more cosmonauts in flight and/or training, and blew up a lot more rockets on the pad and in flight, than their U.S. counterparts. The US actually lost more astronauts than the USSR, but they also flew a lot more. That's also why they steadily outpaced the USSR: they just plain flew more missions,and thus steadily improved and flight-tested their technology.

The Very Large Telescope can achieve a resolution of 0.001 arcseconds by combining the images received by four massive unit telescopes. So even if you and your friends had access to the largest telescope on Earth, there's no way you could see the retroreflectors from Earth.
