As a Forgotten Australian, The Seekers were my sole source of comfort during my years of suffering. They always managed to keep me looking forwards and helped put the bad behind me.
The Seekers are Australia's greatest singing group ever and this song I Am Australian is the greatest Australian song - it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it and I'm proud to be an Aussie - I have loved the Seekers all my life
@raywint1 You are preaching to the choir. When we all have more faith in each other and care about each other we will be one race. The Human Race. Religion provides some good moral and philisophic codes and laws, but are in essence misused by the leaders of those religions to hold power over people. And such power can be used for bad as well as good. Have a great new year.
by heck i'm english but this really tears at the heart, WHY have'nt we got someone a quarter as good as judith to sing us a song like that? when she sang it at the mcg it must have brought australia to a standstill, WONDERFUL JUDITH.XXX
I am a Kiwi who served in the Nam with the infantry. The Seekers were bloody good then and still are.Judith is one of the few singers who you can hear every note.Us and our Aussie mates got into lots of firefights but we knew one would never let the others down. This song makes me choke up.Go Aussies we love ya,
Good onya, mate. 3RAR Vietnam vet here. Thanks for your support. Kiwi Arty battery saved my hide in 1968. The Seekers here say it all. Pride in our country, our history, and such a beautiful song really says it all.
I always get chills and teared-up when I hear the Seekers perform. My wife and I grew up with them in the sixties. I, like so many other hundreds, perhaps thousands of young men, had a terrible crush on Judith Durham. Maybe we'll be able to travel down under this coming year to see them live. This song makes me think and feel, that if I had not been born an American, I would want to have been born an Aussie.
Great song! I´m from Austria and I can´t wait for comming to that amazing and beautiful country!! I think if I arrived in Australia I will sing this song because I´m so happy to stand on Australian´s soil!!! :)
Think about this! Why do we let borders, geography, or politics divide us? If you changed some of the lyrics, “I am Australian” would be a great model for a planetary anthem for all Humanity. I am, You are, We are all Human Beings!
@templerman1 A great point but you miss the most important thing that divides us religion, the sooner we all believe in each other and not some mythical beings that may or may not have existed the better the world will be.
I've commented on this song before. I think many Americans would like our national anthem to say more. Songs like This Land Is Your Land by Woody Guthrie, (which has been adapted to versions in the UK, Wales, Ireland, Belgium, Namibia, and in Israel), and I am Australian's message would make a great new national anthem. Any comments on the idea?
@rich963 Yep - and just last weekend they got a Golden Guitar at Tamworth for it - Heritage Song of the Year ... can't remember who recorded this version though.
This song gave me shivers. I am an American and love our patriotic music, but we need an American anthem that truly inspires. God bless the U.S.A., and Australia.
This is one fantastic song from an equally fantastic group. I agree with fabfaruk's statement in that we have some great patrotic songs in the U.S., but nothing as descriptive as this. We share a simular history in that we left Brain, but for different reasons. We left for religious freedom and I guess freedom from the Crown, whereas Australia was a Penal Colony and thus a much darker history in the beginning.
Every time I hear this song I tear up and I'm not even an Aussie. We have some great patriotic songs in the USA but I'm not sure we have one that says it as elgantly as this one does. Australia is so blessed to have a group like the seekers as a national treasure.
Nobody. NOBODY can sing this song with such emotional authority as The Seekers. Not Woodley alone, any other soloist nor any other collection of singers. ONLY The Seekers. Amazing.
Another fantastic performance from surely the best band in the whole world, absolutely perfect! Thanks Richard for posting! Keep up the fantastic work!

For some strange reason the 2nd verse was not included in this performance:
"I came upon the Prison Ship, bowed down by Iron Chains,
I worked the land, endured the Lash, and waited for the Rains.
I'm a settler, I'm a Farmer's wife, on a dry and barren run,
First a Convict, then a free man, I became Australian.
A rather important bit of the History to be casually dropped, eh?
