Since the 19th century, we have been meddling in Latin American affairs, overthrowing governments that were hostile to the interests of American corporations, supporting dictators, arming death squads, etc. They come because our economic poliicies and exploitation of Latin American resources have led to brutal poverty down there. The people who came to the US illegally, however, are pretty much essential for keeping the fragile US economy afloat. They're the reason you can afford the food in your fridge.

Illegal immigrants do not keep our economy running. True they perform many shitty jobs for less than minimum wage, but that is off set by the money they cost us by flooding our jails and wasting other resources(border patrol, etc.)
