I am so pyched about the upcoming movie/musical! When I found out who was going to be Valjean I was triple excited! His voice is magical! He is no wilkinson or Boe but he carries his own awesomely!
Just a note, the 1998 was based off of the novel, not the musical (which was based off of the book too). Is it going to be by the directors of "Phantom of the Opera"?
Do you know if they have cast Cosette yet? I keep on hearing about Haigan Day, but as far as I can tell she hasn't got an proper audition. I would love to see a new face as Cosette though
they cast hugh jackman and russell crowe as valjean and javert. helena bonham carter and anne hathaway are apperently i talks for the roles as fantine and mme thenardier.
@xxxOrcaman4xxx He could so be a comic relief. Ever seen "Pirates of the Caribbean?" He's got it in him, that's for sure! And the Thenardier's don't have to sound too pleasant so he'll get away with whatever voice he's got.
IMO Samantha Barks cuts the notes at the end of each line too short when she sings. especially in A little Fall of Rain. If she'll work on that, she'll be great as Eponine.
@musicloverdude5 I would love him too... but he's a bit old for the role... Ahh... If only Michael Ball was 25 again. My choice is Ramin Karimloo... or more showbiz role Jonathan Groff because he can sing and he's good looking!
are making ful musical if you watch 25th an all the way to credits you will see promise rumors flying the the guy who play wolverine is going to be Valjan
Heck, forget the cast, just to see this show with the full score from the musical would be wonderful... An to the original poster, I couldn't stand the 1998 version. Taking out Eponine and Gavrosh (sp?), and other key characters altered the storyline...
My cast: Jean Valjean - Colm WIlkinson (most preferably) or Alfie Boe Javert - Philip Quast or Andrew Varela Cosette - Sierra Boggess or Katie Hall Marius - Ramin Karimloo or Matthew Morrison M. Thenadiers - Alun Armstrong or Michael Kostroff Mme. Thenardier - Jenny Galloway or Shawna Hamic Enjolras - Ramin Karimloo Fantine - Lea Salonga or Ruthie Henshall or Betsy Morgan Eponine - Lea Michele or Samantha Barks Most of these have already been in Les Miz before and actually have TALENT
Hugh Jackman has confirmed he will be Jean Valjean in the upcoming movie now. Personally, i think he'll be good as he is a tenor and has done well in other singing roles he has played. And Paul Bettany maybe Javert but i aint ever heard him sing before so i dont know what he will be like :/
Just so you know they are making a Les Miserables musical movie and they have cast Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe as Javert! Look it up on IMDB!
@dondonp12004 No offense, but that film would be a huge flop with some of these choices. Clay Aiken? No way that would happen! He doesn't have the chops to act. Hugh Jackman could play a role in Les Miz, but not as Javert. Idina Menzel would be a good Fantine. Nick Jonas was a great Marius, he could stay with it. Simon Pegg may be comic enough, but his voice would need work. Ramin is tough to replace; idk what you were thinking with the other 2, not meant for operas like this! And Gomez? Ick, no
RAMIN KARIMLOO SHOULD PLAY ENJORAS! he was PERFECT in the 25th anniversary. samantha barks should play eponine in the film version, she was perfect too!!

@IreneSharda3 At the begining Valjean was about 48, miserable and mentally destroyed after 19 years in a galley. I think Colm's voice shows that perfectly. But of course we're all entitled to our own opinions.
Very nice "musical advertisement" you made! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE if they would make one, like they did with the Phantom of the Opera. I would watch it a million times over (like I have the Phantom. lol)
My ideal cast would be the 25th anniveresery tour cast (UK one) but with Jon Robyns as Marius, David Thaxton as Enjolras and Samantha Barks as Eponine.
Dream cast for a film would be: Jean Valjean: It's a toss-up between Colm Wilkinson and Alfie Boe (who was AMAZING in the O2 concert!!) Javert: Philip Quast or Alan Rickman Marius: Adam Jacobs Enjolras: Patrick Wilson or Ramin Karimloo Fantine: Ruthie Henshall or Lea Salonga Cosette: Emmy Rossum Eponine: Samantha Barks M. Thernardier: Alun Armstrong Mme. Thernardier: Jenny Galloway Gavroche: Freddie Highmore (if he can sing)
My ideal cast would be: Jean Valjean: Colm Wilkinson [of course, the one and only] Javert: Phillip Quast Bishop: Paul Monaghan Fantine: Ruthie Henshall/ Lea Solanga Marius: Michael Ball /Nick Jonas Eponine: Lea Solanga / Lea Michele Cosette: Samantha Barks/ Nancy Sullivan M.Thenadiers: Alun Armstrong Mm.Thenardiers: Jenny Galloway Enjoloras: Ramin Karimloo/ Michael Maguire But that's my opinion!! (=
Ideal casting you'd think. I suppose Uma Thurman was Eponine, however by now with the sort of stuff she's done - Kill Bill emphasising the violence and Prime emphasising the age, I think she'd make a great Mme Thenadier.
Ideal casting you'd think. I suppose Uma Thurman was Eponine, however at her age now and with some of the stuff she's done, I think she'd be a great Mme Thenadier.
Would be nice if they did do a film musical of Les Mis, not just the songs like in the 10th anniversary concert or this film that only has the story line. I love them both but i wish cameron mackintosh would film the stage show and sell it to the public but then i suppose he makes more money with the stage performance than he would from dvds. And this way the fewer times you see it live on stage makes it more powerful and memorable, rather than always having it available on dvd.
My cast would be (ideally, in an alternate universe, etc): Valjean: Russell Crowe Javert: Alan Rickman Fantine: Would keep Uma Thurman Cossette: Emma Stone Eponine: Megan Fox Marius: Adrian Grenier Enjolras: Emile Hirsch Grantaire: James Franco Thenardier: Johnny Depp Madame Thenardier: Helena Bonham Carter Bishop: Anthony Hopkins Gavroche: Moises Arias
it really wouldn't be that hard to make it into a movie. even in songs like "what have i done" or "javert's soliloquy" where its just one character singing to themselves,it could be done. and the if the studio got a good cast, they'd make a ton of money.
I'd love to see the musical Les Mis as a film IF it was adapted faithfully and not cut, and had a truly talented cast (no celebrity plugs). That's the only way I'd want to see it- going halfway would just turn out awful.
OH-MY-Gosh !!!!!!!!!! if they ever really make the musical movie version ii hahhaaaavvveee to bee apart offf itttt!!!!!!!!!! .... as almost every fan wishes . lol:P
i mean, the regular movie was amazing but because there isn't even a live performance that was taped for pbs or something i've never seen the show. the music is breathtaking and it would do really well as a movie musical.
I have not seen it on stage, wich I will do hopfully, but Sweden doesn't put up so many musicals like they do in London. It might take ages before it will be set up here. So i haveto travell, and i can't do that all the time :(
so a movie would be a temporary solution for my hunger to see musicals :)
My dream cast is the entire 25th Anniversary tour cast, only with Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean. I love JOJ, but Colm is better. And Katie Hall shines as Cosette.
I would only quibble strongly with Gerard Butler as Enjolras. He's much too old and too . . . rugged looking. The revolutionaries are in their college-aged years, or perhaps slightly older, and Enjolras is supposed to be the personification of the revolutionary ideal, with clean-cut, perfect features. Like a Greek statue.
@mrmccollough Tell me you're kidding on some of these. I mean, I love Helena Bonham Carter to pieces, and JCB too, but not for this- MAYBE Jamie, but Helena's totally wrong for Fantine. And Gerard Butler can't sing, he already killed the Phantom movie (do agree with Emmy Rossum though), never mind that he's too old for Enjolras. D: I do agree with the others though, though I also love Jenny Galloway's Madame T.
@aviva0017 I don't agree that Gerard Butler killed "Phantom". He was cast because he had a raw, untrained voice (the director compared it to a rock star) It lent a certain animal sexuality to the Phantom.
@mrmccollough fantine is supposed to have been a blonde haired obvious beauty. it;s the one thing she holds onto after selling everything she owns to pay for cosette. she keeps her mirror to remind herself she still has her looks, her golden hair and pearl teeth, which makes the fact that she sells her teeth and hair particularly heartbreaking. I reckon someone like scarlett johanssen would be brilliant!
@mrmccollough Helena as Fantine... idk about that one. Colm is too old, so is gary morris.... but the 25 anniversary tour cast has just about the best valjean ever. Philip Quast is perfect but might look too old on the big screen. Helena might also be a good madame thenadier, but would sound a little too sweet. Angela lansbury perhaps???
@mrmccollough What a crap cast. No offence, Everyone has there opinion but Anne Hathaway? Gerard Butler? Jennifer Saunders? Come on!! In the 25th anniversary they announced that they have planes to make one. Cameron Mackintosh revealed later that it would be a musical, and will appear a cameo by all the original cast and comes out spring 2012. So get exited!
@mrmccollough At the end of the 25th anyversary DVD it says... and follow @lesmisofficial on twitter they always give out little details... [a different person from the Les Mis company manages it every certain time] & follow me at @JacquiRoope (=
Anne Hathaway is a bit too old to be Cosette, and I personally don't think Emmy could pull it off at all. (she over-acts in my opinion) Though I adore Helena, she does not have the voice to pull off Fantine. My personal pick for that would be Lea Salonga. Gerard Butler is only bad-ass when he shouts "This...is...SPARTA!" otherwise, he's kind of mediocre.
Jamie Campbell Bower, he's talented but I don't think he could be Marius
Thanks! I think it definitely needs to be turned into a movie. The play is so good it's a wonder why it isn't a movie yet. Hopefully it will become one in the NEAR future.
@OwlAndQuill and the movie cuts out alot from the actual show and even more from the book. i saw the movie a few months ago and i now i'm in the show and there's just so much they left out. they even just mesh alot of major characters together. it really doesn't work although it is a good movie.
@Forcalious In the 25th anniversary they announced that they have planes to make one. Cameron Mackintosh revealed later that it would be a musical and comes out spring 2012. So get exited!
@Forcalious Actually the producers of this musical has announced that it will be a movie. I am not completly sure but it will be released in 2012 sometime.
There is another Les Miserables movie being made next year I don't know if its a musical or not, but is should be because then it would be then if they released it around october, then it would be the 25th anniversy of the Original London production. Lea Michele chould be Eponine, just saying.
I saw the movie first, and loved it ... it's probably my all-time favorite movie! I only just saw the musical the other day. It was great, but I prefer musicals that have some dialogue in them :)
Man I remember my Variety magazine foldout on one side was James Cameron's SPIDERMAN and the other was Les Miserables The Musical An Alan Parker Film and they had release dates...and nothing ever happened...still waiting.
Great job on the trailer!! Really excellent!! I would LOVE to see the stage show done as a movie if they could do it right. With some REALLY talented singers. And it would have to be long but who cares! I'd be glad to sit through if its done right.
This is the film version adapted from the stage musical. It follows the same story line, but there is no singing in the movie. I am a HUGE Les Miz fan and I am a little disappointed in the film version. Oh well, we still have the theatre production! :)
yeah, it's a film adaptation of the book/musical, but there's no music in it, which is always disappointing. But I agree, the film itself is not especially good. Which is odd, since the actors in it are generally very talented ones (i.e. Neeson and Rush) but for some reason this film just doesn't work.
@OwlAndQuill i think they were pointing out that the story is the same w/o music. its still the raw story line. And u can tell the story line with out music. I would have to say the movie could have done better but it still had that powerful story line and music makes it even better
@eiffeljay87 The film and the stage musical are diferent versions of the Victor Hugo's book, one of the more importants books of the world literature. The film is not the version adapted from the musical.
I, wishing to be a film writer and director, ahve made it my lifelong goal to make a musical movie of my love, les miz. However, why didnt you like the 1998 version? I enjoyed it throughly.
Yeah, like the person who posted this video, I didn't particularly like it either. I mean, the acting is good but they left out a LOT of major parts. For example: Eponine. She isn't even in the movie and she is supposed to play a huge part in the story.
they really need to make this into a musical movie. It is a beloved classic. and then recast Uma as Fantine (she can sing) but idk about the songs though.lol but this would be like a 3 hr movie. and they need to make the whole musical, not what they did in the movie where they just stopped at Javaire's suicide.
wow. this was excellent!!! seriously. i've seen some home made trailers that were decent, but this was the best!! all it needed was the deep voice at the end to say the title and release date. seriously wonderful!!
I dream a dream right now to be the one to make this movie possible... I'd do anything to help make something as amazing as a Les Miserables movie musical. <3
I loved the music coming in over the Columbia logo. Seeing and hearing even just that much in a movie theater would be enough to make me squeal like a school girl.
i love how everyone can spell Les Miserables right but they can never say it right unless they're french. It's pronounced Lay Miserabla not Lay Miserable or Lay Miserab -.- speek the accents people!

my picks for eponine, marius and cosette:
Lea Michele (lea Salonga would be my first choice but she is too old) [eponine]
Jonathan Groff [marius]
Emma Watson (depending or not she could sing, and by sing i mean hit the, i believe cosette is a soprano, right notes) [cosette]

Jean ValJean - Clay Aiken
Javert - either Alfred Molina or Hugh Jackman
Fantine - either Lea Salonga, Idina Minzel, Amy Jo Johnson or Tiffany Thornton
Cosette - unknown
Marius - either Mitchel Musso, Nick Jonas, Jake T. Austin or Jacob Kogan
Thénardiers - Simon Pegg and Ann Harada

And this way the fewer times you see it live on stage makes it more powerful and memorable, rather than always having it available on dvd.

Nice trailer! Where the heck was Eponine in that movie version though?
TheTempest66 1 year ago
it really wouldn't be that hard to make it into a movie. even in songs like "what have i done" or "javert's soliloquy" where its just one character singing to themselves,it could be done. and the if the studio got a good cast, they'd make a ton of money.
CancerousPiesRTasty 1 year ago
I'd love to see the musical Les Mis as a film IF it was adapted faithfully and not cut, and had a truly talented cast (no celebrity plugs). That's the only way I'd want to see it- going halfway would just turn out awful.

OH-MY-Gosh !!!!!!!!!! if they ever really make the musical movie version ii hahhaaaavvveee to bee apart offf itttt!!!!!!!!!! .... as almost every fan wishes . lol:P
moviegurl16 1 year ago
seriously, why don't they make a movie musical?
i mean, the regular movie was amazing but because there isn't even a live performance that was taped for pbs or something i've never seen the show. the music is breathtaking and it would do really well as a movie musical.
tianicolea23 1 year ago
wow, I hope that this musical will be a movie...
I have not seen it on stage, wich I will do hopfully, but Sweden doesn't put up so many musicals like they do in London. It might take ages before it will be set up here. So i haveto travell, and i can't do that all the time :(
so a movie would be a temporary solution for my hunger to see musicals :)

Awesome thanks for the nice heroic shot at 0:40 lol! I wish t was the musical version that was done

You know what? I wouldn't care about anyone else in the cast of a "musical movie" of les mis, as long as Colm Wilkinson got to play Valjean.
jc19940 1 year ago
this isnt the musical, but their both great :D
LookLoveShoot 2 years ago
My dream cast is the entire 25th Anniversary tour cast, only with Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean. I love JOJ, but Colm is better. And Katie Hall shines as Cosette.
hazellwood 2 years ago
ONLY CAST FOR A FILM WOULD BE!!!
Jean Valjean - Colm WIlkinson (the definitive, and not too old for the role, as jean dies at 70 in the book)
Javert - Philip Quast (PERFECT)
Bishop - Christopher Lee
Cosette - Anne Hathaway or Emmy Rossum
Marius - Jamie Campbell Bower
Thenadiers - Jennifer Saunders and Alun Armstrong
Enjolras - Gerard Butler
Fantine - Helena Bonham Carter

great cast...^_^
darcimkire07 2 years ago
wow. all u need is an eponine. she wasnt in this movie but shes in all the others lol. but omg u nailed the cast O.o
XoToriBearXo 2 years ago
Eponine... umm... Anne Hataway or Emmy Rossum, whoever didnt get Cossette. Ooh or Jennifer Ellison, who played meg in Phantom.
mrmccollough 2 years ago
I don't necessarily agree with your Marius, but otherways I looove it. I think Anne would be a GREAT Cosette!
SashaDaae 2 years ago
I would only quibble strongly with Gerard Butler as Enjolras. He's much too old and too . . . rugged looking. The revolutionaries are in their college-aged years, or perhaps slightly older, and Enjolras is supposed to be the personification of the revolutionary ideal, with clean-cut, perfect features. Like a Greek statue.
smilingsoprano 1 year ago
@mrmccollough you forgot Eponine..
firebowser1 1 year ago
@mrmccollough Tell me you're kidding on some of these. I mean, I love Helena Bonham Carter to pieces, and JCB too, but not for this- MAYBE Jamie, but Helena's totally wrong for Fantine. And Gerard Butler can't sing, he already killed the Phantom movie (do agree with Emmy Rossum though), never mind that he's too old for Enjolras. D: I do agree with the others though, though I also love Jenny Galloway's Madame T.
aviva0017 1 year ago
@aviva0017 I don't agree that Gerard Butler killed "Phantom". He was cast because he had a raw, untrained voice (the director compared it to a rock star) It lent a certain animal sexuality to the Phantom.
TheTempest66 1 year ago
@mrmccollough fantine is supposed to have been a blonde haired obvious beauty. it;s the one thing she holds onto after selling everything she owns to pay for cosette. she keeps her mirror to remind herself she still has her looks, her golden hair and pearl teeth, which makes the fact that she sells her teeth and hair particularly heartbreaking. I reckon someone like scarlett johanssen would be brilliant!
voldemortswilly 1 year ago
@mrmccollough Helena as Fantine... idk about that one. Colm is too old, so is gary morris.... but the 25 anniversary tour cast has just about the best valjean ever. Philip Quast is perfect but might look too old on the big screen. Helena might also be a good madame thenadier, but would sound a little too sweet. Angela lansbury perhaps???
Thejokerjuniorshow 1 year ago
@mrmccollough What a crap cast. No offence, Everyone has there opinion but Anne Hathaway? Gerard Butler? Jennifer Saunders? Come on!! In the 25th anniversary they announced that they have planes to make one. Cameron Mackintosh revealed later that it would be a musical, and will appear a cameo by all the original cast and comes out spring 2012. So get exited!
HappyThoughtsToU 1 year ago
@HappyThoughtsToU Firstly, When I wrote this cast I was relatively new to Les Mis. Nowadays, I can see the huge errors I made.
Secondly, do you have a link to this announcement, I find it hard to believe such good news till I see it!
mrmccollough 1 year ago
@mrmccollough At the end of the 25th anyversary DVD it says... and follow @lesmisofficial on twitter they always give out little details... [a different person from the Les Mis company manages it every certain time] & follow me at @JacquiRoope (=
HappyThoughtsToU 1 year ago
@mrmccollough I beg to differ.
Other than that, good choices.
BloomAndGrow 1 year ago
@mrmccollough Like your cast! Gerard butler is way to old though. So is Helena Bonhham Carter. Enjoras is around 26 when he dies in the movie.

@mrmccollough
Christopher Lee, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Campbell Bower, & Gerard Butler (HORRIBLE pick for Enjolras).
Those actors have NO experience in the art of musical theatre.
ClickThisProductions 7 months ago
@ClickThisProductions ok, I admit my choices have changed in the year since I wrote this comment...
-Anne Hathaway starred in musical film Ella Enchanted and presented a musical segment of the oscars ceremony
-Jamie Campbell Bower played apart in the film version of another stage musical (sweeney todd) and was bloody good in it.
-Gerard Butler, phantom.
-christopher lee, look him up, a trained singer, has performed on soundtracks for many of his films. And an experienced theatre actor

There should be a musical made of the movie and I've been trying to come up with the cast.
Anthony Stewart Head as Jean Valjean
Alan Rickman as Javert
Christopher Lee as Bishop Myriel
Jayne Wisner as Cosette
Alexa Vega as Cosette
Tim Curry as Thenardier
Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thenardier
Ewan McGregor or Jamie Campbell Bower as Marius
Neil Patrick Harris as Enjolras

I want to see a film version of les miseralbles
Forcalious 2 years ago 11
The footage is from the actual film with Liam Neeson, Geoffrey Rush, Claire Danes, etc. But it's not a *musical* version. Just a dramatic narrative.
OwlAndQuill 2 years ago 5
Yeah, I know.
What I meant was that I want to see a musical+film version of it.
Forcalious 2 years ago
@OwlAndQuill and the movie cuts out alot from the actual show and even more from the book. i saw the movie a few months ago and i now i'm in the show and there's just so much they left out. they even just mesh alot of major characters together. it really doesn't work although it is a good movie.

There is another Les Miserables movie being made next year I don't know if its a musical or not, but is should be because then it would be then if they released it around october, then it would be the 25th anniversy of the Original London production. Lea Michele chould be Eponine, just saying.

Great job on the trailer!! Really excellent!! I would LOVE to see the stage show done as a movie if they could do it right. With some REALLY talented singers. And it would have to be long but who cares! I'd be glad to sit through if its done right.
dlsw23 2 years ago
This is the film version adapted from the stage musical. It follows the same story line, but there is no singing in the movie. I am a HUGE Les Miz fan and I am a little disappointed in the film version. Oh well, we still have the theatre production! :)
eiffeljay87 2 years ago
yeah, it's a film adaptation of the book/musical, but there's no music in it, which is always disappointing. But I agree, the film itself is not especially good. Which is odd, since the actors in it are generally very talented ones (i.e. Neeson and Rush) but for some reason this film just doesn't work.
OwlAndQuill 2 years ago
@OwlAndQuill i think they were pointing out that the story is the same w/o music. its still the raw story line. And u can tell the story line with out music. I would have to say the movie could have done better but it still had that powerful story line and music makes it even better
TheBroadwaybabe01 1 year ago
@eiffeljay87 watch the 1934 film version then. its perfect
jcracker 1 year ago
@eiffeljay87 The film and the stage musical are diferent versions of the Victor Hugo's book, one of the more importants books of the world literature. The film is not the version adapted from the musical.
rubensorel 1 year ago
@eiffeljay87 And there's no Eponine in it, and that's the most beautiful character of Les Mis :D.

I, wishing to be a film writer and director, ahve made it my lifelong goal to make a musical movie of my love, les miz. However, why didnt you like the 1998 version? I enjoyed it throughly.
jdeppluver1599 2 years ago
Yeah, like the person who posted this video, I didn't particularly like it either. I mean, the acting is good but they left out a LOT of major parts. For example: Eponine. She isn't even in the movie and she is supposed to play a huge part in the story.
TwiHardGirl 2 years ago
young eponine was in the movie..
shin2go 2 years ago
Yeah young eponine. but at that age she barely has a part.
TwiHardGirl 2 years ago
they really need to make this into a musical movie. It is a beloved classic. and then recast Uma as Fantine (she can sing) but idk about the songs though.lol but this would be like a 3 hr movie. and they need to make the whole musical, not what they did in the movie where they just stopped at Javaire's suicide.
