  • Thank You for sharing it I learned a lot today . Thanks again I will gonna try it next time.

  • ... in all the tings you have on your carabiner ... you dont have some keys haha

  • @survivalyongsters Don't really need keys in the bush :)

  • fot the same tweezers

  • Fantastic

  • Good vid

  • Great vid dave - i've never considered how i'd manage 1 handed, will be practicing this.

Do you think your small hacksaw blade would throw a spark? You could also put a small piece of duct tape over the blade - stop it catching your trousers or tarp. Would also give you a (small) piece of tape.

  • @s1aitken

Yes.. small hacksaw blades can be used with Ferro rods. The duct tape is a good idea :)

  • thanks that was really good imformation

    john

  • Just one problem, wouldn't TSA take the knife?????????

  • @SNUZZLETHAT

Why would TSA be around me? I don't fly (for the simple reason that I can't take my kit) That tells you how strongly I believe in having my kit along!!

  • @BushcrafterOnFire

I have a question, if you will strike the firesteel with the sharp edge of your knive, will it get blunt? I always thought that. It always happens to me

  • @TheDutchBushcrafter

Yes it will.. IF I ever do it with my GOOD knives.. it's usually with the back edge. In an emergency (such as I break one of my arms) I won't really care as long as I can survive. But still then I would use the very back edge of the blade and not the center.

  • Great job. Love this. Our son is 5 and he was so frustrated because he couldn't start a fire with his metal match...until I saw this video. I knew this was the answer. So we went right out and gave it a try. I showed him how to do it. and he gave it a try. It worked the first time. He was so thrilled. I wish you could have seen him glow with pride. Now He can start fire with this method and a magnifying glass. Thank you so much.

  • by the way country comm ( no mistake in spelling) has an amazing little whetsone that fits on your carabiner

  • great video

  • Good one

  • Not at all kicking this video or his ideas on a carabiner kit but a multi-tool, a Tool Logic survival card, and a survival bracelet/ watch band could perform the same function without having the Batman look...again not insulting but to each his own!!!! Just more of a "stealth" look. Good video has always, keeps the gears turning!

  • nice shirt

  • great video my friend, I shared it on FB too.

  • Thanks David, good video and we always enjoy seeing what you carry. I like to add a small whistle on my carabiner just in case I need to summon help. That's a great technique on the one handed fire starting!

  • Dave, thanks for showing us your carabiner kit. The one handed fire starting method could come in handy that's for sure. I was wondering if you could tell us more about the small signal mirror, looks to be polished stainless steel? Where could I purchase one like it? Thanks again!

  • @CdnJackHunt

    Thanks for the comments bro...

The signal mirror comes with every knife that you buy from TOPS. I am sure you can get them online as well for just s couple of dollars...

  • Great idea of learning to do things with one hand. You just never know. Thanks for showing the tip.

  • Thank you for your teachings sir. Greatly appreciated. I'm a city man from Montreal, and I have hardly any outdoor experiences sadly, but I love watching your vids and have learned a lot. Considering worldly affairs, I believe that a bugout bag is a must and your videos have allowed me to be just a bit more prepared than "the next guy" in my opinion. Lord knows I hope never to need it....

  • @greatguerin

We never know exactly what we will need... but it's a good thing to be prepared!

  • Very nice,,,But mighty noisey not for those who are evading.

  • very nice sir. Thank you for sharing.

  • Another great vid, thanks!

  • Great job Bro. Dave....I was wondering about your belt....is that one of the military hook and loop closure belts? If so do you like it? I still use the old military style buckle so I can make it fit any size for whatever I might need. What are your thoughts on belts? Thanks again Dave.....God Bless....

  • @grizphoto

It's not a hook and loop . It has a "squeeze bar" (I don't know what it's really called) that makes it quick and easy to adjust the belt. My thoughts on belts? They hold up my pants :) LOL

  • @BushcraftOnFire LOL......I love it........"They hold up my pants"....:) I didn't think about that answer coming back .........that's a good one brother.........I'm still laughing! I haven't seen one of those belts that I can remember....good deal.

  • Good work man.. When I do a one handed fire, I use the saw blade to cuta groove in the branch and then wedge the striker in the groove.. Then draw the rod backwards off the striker. I works pretty well I think.

  • a great lession thank you Soarin;)

  • two things, is it repelling grade, and to prevent the para cord from slipping undone, wax it or throw a few ranger bands on it to keep it safe and then you got some ranger bands on your kit

  • @chrissept21

Yes.. it is repelling grade... Good tip on the ranger band... Thanks Bro

  • I like the convenience of a carabiner, the problem is the noise when I walk with them. Clang-clang-clang.

  • I used to use a air port metal loop but now i switched to using a carabiner now its much easyer!

  • Nice stuff, you should add a pico pen also, i love it and use it all the time!

  • Thanks Dave.

    Yes...I did enjoy this.

    5*

    Rob

  • I am always afraid I will lose some items wearing it on a carabiner, like the tweezers. does it lock securely ?

  • @Trailtraveller

The tweezers do lock securely.. although I did drop them out once... but I found them again. I think that they weren't replaced securely. I generally carry duplicate items on my carabiner that are in my Ekit... But I also do carry the carabiner in my pocket as shown while in the bush which minimizes loss of equipment

  • Dave, I love your vids. This is coming from an old eagle scout 975 St. Charles Mo. Much much much love for what you are doing. you are making a difference for those whom are watching and learning!

  • @drjackohollious

Thank you very much.. All of the support and comments that we get keep us motivated.. Thank you for your kind words Bro!

  • Dave, I love your vids. This is coming from an old eagle scout 975 St. Charles Mo. Much love for what you are doing.

  • Good to know. Thanks David

  • Thanks for sharing a new technique to start a fire!!!

  • I like your system, everything is kept together and easy to locate. Even if I were to place that in my pack, it would all be right at hand rather than scattered everywhere.

  • thanks mate, you helped me out with some ideas. a coincidence that i decided to make an EDC today. i think i will put a saw blade on mine good idea, but i would think when moving through the bush it would wear on your jeans or something no?

  • @sixtyseven8ths

I have not noticed any wear on my clothing..

  • doesn't that technique dull your blade?

  • @xerocool2

Very Slightly.. But nothing that can't be fixed right up with a ceramic rod. Notice I only use the very inside of the blade.. by the handle.

  • Excellent video Dave! Hope you enjoy your minimalist camp!

  • Where did you find that belt...It looked like it had velcro to hold it in place? i have a leather belt that hids the tag end of the belt so it doesnt flap around any...but Im digging the velcro...looks like it would give more adjustment, and have more uses in the bush

  • @MrCableguyken

It's a SERE belt.. you can find them on line.. A good friend Omer gave me that one.

  • @BushcraftOnFire Thank you sir for the prompt reply...will have to order me one...I dont like standard belts because the tag end can come loosed, and flop around...I like things to be tight, and in place so there is less to snag on in the bush.

  • pretty slick. Thanks. God Bless, be well

  • Dave,

Good vid. Tell us about that bow drill bearing on your Mora - How to/demonstration, keep up the good work.

  • @dd2sparky

DD.. I have used that in a few videos.. search for the Winter Camp Bow Drill video.

  • Very nice kit, Bro. One hand instruction rocks.

Good You put it up, cause Dave C took his carabiner kit video out. Made my kit to split rings also.

Is that a rapelling grade carabiner? Missed that point. I've got the cheapo chinese biners, but its probably better to have rapelling/climbing biners in case You need to.

  • @tekknorat

Thanks for your support. The carabiner is a high quality one.. D-Lock that can definitely be used for climbing if needed.

  • I like the Carabiner idea and using the smaller one to hold it. I do that with my truck keys for the same reasons. I do like to comment for those saving a few dollars to not get the CHEAP Carabiner's, them 50 cent things.. they break with ease and you'll loose your gear..

also theirs these tubes called on ebay called "Keep2Go-Tube-Multi-Purpose-Container" that are really handy for this application.

The one handed fire start is a really good idea, a good tip for just in case.

  • Good tip thanks

  • Did you pick all of these up at County Comm?

  • @thanson77

Don't know what County Comm is.. but we pick up gear whenever and wherever we can find it.. I got the split rings at our local "Tool Store" and the gear from various places including a great friend (BQualls) who gave me the compass.

  • David, you continue to be an inspiration. Keep up the great videos! Great idea, using a second carabiner on your belt to attach the the main one.

  • Fine video Dave. I like the biner on the belt much better that on the belt loop. I'll have to adapt mine this way. I had the same problem with my cordage coming loose at times and I solved it by using zip ties to bind my cordage. I easily carry 20' of cordage without any problem and if I need to use some I can pull it through the ties and tighten them up to keep it secure. Blessing to you and Family.

  • great video, keep it up buddy.i have learned alot from you, thank you so much -people like you make youtube worthwhile

  • It's a carabiner locked on to a carabiner.... Holding a compass with a carabiner

  • Now that was neat Well done!!

  • I enjoyed this vid Dave. Going to work on an edc caribiner that will be useful on my new job.

  • cool, thanks!

  • love the Tshirt.

  • Thanks Dave

  • Dave as I was watching your video I was thinking "wow does that look noisy, the guy must not hunt." Then you showed how your gear can be manipulated around the belt and placed in the pocket. Great stuff! I'm going to try your system.

  • Awsome video dave,I also carry a carabiner with keys and other things ,My wife says that I have "that classic redneck jingle"! BTW I love that shirt where can I get one?

  • @Livingnthewoods41

You need to talk with Dave C about the shirt.. They are his Pathfinder shirts

  • I carry a stirker a light and some tinder in a walgreens pill vial on my carabiner (which doubles as my key chain) but I also carry around 40 feet of 550 cord around my neck (I still have to show you how i do that...my camara isn't working atm) duct tape, a fresnel lens, condoms (as a water container) and a scapel blade in my wallet and I'm curently working on a m ini neck knife kit... I'm going for as much redundancy as possible. (Aluminium foil is definetly going on my neck knife)

  • Nice shirt... ;) I'm sure Dave will notice... lol...

  • that looks like a great belt, where'd you get it?

  • @mikehawk1965

Hey Bro.. We were just talking about you.. give me a call later

  • Great video

  • I use those Lansky Sharpeners alot. I wouldn't say razor sharp but a nice utility edge sure, and it's fast. I generally follow it up with a small Arkansas stone and then you are pretty close to a razor sharp edge. Really, it's the fastest, easiest, lightest sharpening system I've found.

  • @AaronAlso

Yes.. they are ok.. only thing I don't like about them is that they are a set angle.. which NONE of my blades are sharpened at...

  • Great tip on the onr hand fire starter.

  • Great technique!

  • Very good demo! Funny, I just got the same fire starter and sharper with my Eco Hawk axe kit which is partnered with Top Knives. So I'll be testing that one handed

    method soon.

  • @CaptainFur

Yes.. Vec has Mike Fuller making the Hawks (Which are great BTW). Tops generally sends out the fire starter, the sharpener, and the signal mirror with all of their knives.. So you have 1/2 your carabiner already done for you :)

  • @BushcraftOnFire I plan on doing a review of the ECO HAWK kit. I think its great idea for a back-up or emergency kit.

  • anothe thing, I have found EDCdepot dot com to have some great gear for low prices for the items. They have a great mini butane lighter that is fully encapsulated that I have added to the mix for my one handed use, figured that my kit was for daily use and not long term. So its great for quick lighting, small sterilization and cordage end melting, and keep a striker kit in the BOB and other kits we have.

  • You know, if you make yourself some ranger bands out of bicycle inner tubes you can make that kit a lot more silent, keeping it from jingleing and bouncing around even if you don't have it in your pocket.

Some tape on the signal mirror would also keep it from scratching.

You can also have some gaffers tape on there by wrapping it around an old credit card and making a hole in it.

Heck, there is a millon things you can do with a carabiner kit but I think these would optimize yours

  • @88Kamikaze69

All great ideas Bro.. Thanks for the input! For the record.. my signal mirror still has the protective plastic from the factory on it.

  • To get an opinion, I have a similar set up. I walk alot at night and on the trails. Being alone at night you realize just how noisy this set up can be. I have purchased liquid rubber. I plan on dipping as much as I can do limit the noise. Do you have any sugestions.

  • @jplerwill

As I said on the video... put the kit in your pocket.. mine is virtually silent there

  • yes, I agree with your wife, that is a total chick magnet kit! LOL. I think it is a great idea!

  • Love these videos, thumbs up!

  • Hey man a bit of inner tube on that paracord will stop it unraveling and stop you haveing to retie it

i have to get one of those draw thru sharpeners for my pocket knives but its hard to find a decent one here in ireland

when im fluffing cotton one handed i trap part of the cotton bamm under the knife blade and stand on it (in a sort of kneeling position) and use my hand to fluff it out from there cos cotton makes my teeth sensitive lol

  • thanks brother, good thinkin practicing with one hand. have fun at camp

  • awsome video as always dave!

    stay safe

    calum

  • Excellent fire starting tip, and the carabiner/hanger on the belt is a great idea as well! I'm a split ring FIEND, much too the chagrin of auto repair shops and other places who put out free keychains for advertising! ; )

  • Dave Wendell sporting the Pathfinder shirt. Nice

    ---

    Another great video.

  • @elpidi0526

    I consider Dave C a good friend

  • Great Vid!

I've been looking at doing something similar so it was very helpful

  • Absolutely great instruction! Great kit recommendations also.

  • SUGGESTION:

a video showing how to knot and store cordage/paracord. i always end up with my paracord all tangled up and i can never tie strong knots :(

  • @volound

I actually showed that on "Setting up Camp" video.. let me know if you have trouble locating it

  • @BushcraftOnFire found it. thanks.

it was uploaded about a month before i found and subscribed to the channel and i assumed it hadnt been covered, but it has. looks like i have a lot of catching up to do ;)

  • whenever i read carabiner i think of the karabiner 98k, or kar98.
