  • how long did it take u to learn it that well?

  • i couldnt seem to get it and i got frustrated so i started swinging my poi around randomly and got it.

  • I've looked up so many tutorials but yours are the only ones that have helped me improve quickly and proficiently. Thanks a ton man!

  • i think the two beat should be the first lesson

thats what i was doing like five minutes before the first lesson, and i was quite good at it,and i think it helped me to do the other things better

  • I've been watching your videos for about an hour and I've managed to get the 2 beat wave already! I am pretty co-ordinated anyway but you are very thorough!

    Thanks for youe help!

  • Ugh I'm having so much trouble with this. Am I doing something horribly wrong, or does it just come with practice? :(

  • I love you

  • Thanks Nathaniel, you've unconfused me about what I'm doing when I turn from forward to reverse two beat weave... was hittin reverse n goin yeaaah!

  • thank you so much for posting these! I love how you break down the moves it really helps. thank you!

  • Thanks for posting these. I've been practising every day for 5 days now and have the first two lessons nailed. Had no internet access for the last 3 days, so just practised first two lessons over and over again. even got the reverse crosses sorted, which i thought was going to be impossible when I started. Like you say, perserverance and patience are key. Slowly moving forward but with fire firmly fixed in my slightly pyro mind. Looking forward to festival time this year.

  • I've been poi spinning for ages and never even realized there was a 2 beat weave. I can do the three and 5 beat (only forwards) but I'm finding it difficult to do the 2 beat. Every time I try to do it I automatically go into the 3 beat. I'm really wishing I found your videos when I was first learning.

  • Sorry for my delayed reply...

thanks mate, really appreciate you taking taking the time to help. I shall persevere! Wish me luck :)

  • first i wanna say thx for making these vids to help ppl learn . ive been tryin to get the two beat weave down but i think im messing up my split time when i cross. i tried to post a vid response , idk if it worked but if u get to see it and notice what im doing wrong i would greatly appreciate ne tips u might have to fix it.

  • [continued from last post]...

i'm hesitant to progress to the other moves in case this will hinder me later but I also try to practice every day so am impatient to progress.

    can you help please?

    cheers

  • @aquagreenbee I would highly recommend continuing to practice this move until you can get it. It may seem really difficult at first, but it's the determination to persevere that will take you far, and the control required to complete this move will be essential for your overall poi spinning.

If you're getting really bored though, feel free to try out other moves, because if you're not enjoying yourself it's hard to stay motivated, so making your practice sessions enjoyable is vital.

  • hey...first of all thanks a million for these lessons, really helpful.

so, i'm struggling with the 2 bit reverse! I can do both hands leading (downwards) and even the 3bit but no matter how much i try i just can't seem to grasp it in reverse :( when I do the individual hands no problem, but together i seem to have no co-ordination with my left arm.

  • these videos are very useful. i started doing fire poi straight out a few weeks ago, my friends do stuff with fire staff twirling so wanted to try something slightly different. but yea, these videos are awesomely helpful, you manage to show/explain things really well and makes it so easy to practice them. cheers :)

  • Thanks for taking the time to make these videos. And you have a really beautiful voice :)

  • this it to hard i can do the cross arms but the first weave i cant do i dont know how i should spin my arms like every time i try to go over the top or w.e first i just mess up -__-

  • NAthaniel! 10xs! i loved ur videos, it helped me a lot ;)

  • now im just a beginner so don't get mad. does it matter what type of beat (ex: 2-beat, 3-beat) you do to any song, or is there specific songs to do it to?

  • @bluewind45 I'm not mad, that's an awesome question, because you're asking how it relates to music, so your head's in the right place for dance already. If the beat is a 4/4 then you can do either, it just depends on how tightly you want the musical structure to be reflected by your poi beats. If you want the moves to fit perfectly with the rhythm count, 4/4 will only work on even-beated moves, like the 2bt or 4bt weaves. 3/3 counts (such as waltzes) will only fit odd beated moves, like 3 or 5bt

  • @NathanielEverist Also worth noting, is that any 1bt move will be suited to match any rhythm count.

  • i cant do it and im gettin frustrated lol. i cant do split time arms crossed at all like i cant even begin too. i can do one arm over under fine and split time fine and crosses fine wtf should i do lol

  • @tylrlast Are the poi colliding or are they hitting your body?

  • @NathanielEverist now i can do it if i start by going left until i have to go under right then somehow my left poi goes sidways somehow lol

  • do you have any podcasts? would be so handy!

  • Thanks a lot! It's a great tutorial!!! I really appreciate this upload. I started 2 days ago and now I'm glad I came across your video. Its definitely a good destressor and I like practicing with music. I can easily follow it and I'll make sure to follow the next ones as well. Kudos to you!

  • yeah your vids very informantive and ive been pratcing a bit and ive gotten better but i still cant do reel turns but thanks

(that was my bf im the real grabbleGrl he just uses my account hes too lazy to make his own lol)

  • i suck at poi but i'll blow ur fuckin mind with finger lights should i still try 2 learn poi?

  • @grabbleGrl Hell yeah, nobody's born good at something, it takes time and practice. If you like something and wanna learn it, you should get out there and give it a go, if you find it's not for you, at least you know, or, in a year from now you may be awesome and really glad you started : ).

  • I decided tonight that I would take up poi. Its the perfect thing for me, its an art form yet its good exercise and works all the parts of my body which need to strengthen up. Your videos are very useful - thanks! I've been doing a couple of the moves and find the videos very easy to follow.

  • I tried to do a two beat weave, but instead I learned a 3 beat weave, which is what i wanted in the first place :)) My split time is not good, that why i cant do 2 beat weave.

I like this video, it is not short, and repeatedly explains the same stuff, which is very good, since in the beginning every single detail is not clear

  • thanks.. i'm trying this... definitely starting poi... can some one be too old or young for this?

  • Somehow I just can't do this move!! Im already able to do the 3 beat weave.. but I had one question about this one.. In the top arch of the poi, where they pass your head, your poi are coming towards your head while mine go away from my head, so to say.. Is this a left/right-handed difference, or preference? or should I really try to master the impossibly-moving-backwards before I try more complicated things?

  • @08sorrow80 actually when doing poi and when ur doing this move the poi should make a straight line not going in or out

  • Thanks again for your videos. I have forward crosses and two beat down and am close to finishing being able to continuously hold a three beat weave. Going in reverse is a bit tricky for me but I'm sure with another day or two of practice, thanks to you, I'll get into the swing of things. I do hope you're having good day.

  • @Micakintyre I'm glad to hear you're getting the moves down, keep it up and you'll be a pro in no time. And yes thanks, I'm having a great day, very kind of you to ask, how's your day been?

  • Comment removed

  • @NathanielEverist My day has gone quite well thank you. I can't quite do anything well in reverse but its a work in progress. I like doing the two beat weave at a slow pace because its more controlable and in its own way relaxing. A couple of my friends have said to just go for fire but I know better than to rush. If I do get a fire set they won't be be lit until I get further along and have minimal mistakes if any.

  • @NathanielEverist Just another quick note. The three beat weave is my favorite to just get outside and spin slowly. Its a good stress reliever, to me, and I'm sure others find it is a nice calm exercise. I wish I had discovered poi a couple years ago. Poi is amazing!

  • @Micakintyre Yeah, fire isn't necessary at all, and once you get to a more advanced level you might find, like me, that you prefer spinning without fire. Plus, your first fire spin will be sooo much more satisfying if you allow yourself the time to develop a respectable moveset so as to give yourself a little more movement and variation to enjoy.Yes, poi is extremely calming, much more so than any other form of object manipulation I've found, and I wish I discovered it much earlier than I did.

  • @NathanielEverist I also wish I had discovered it earlier... 2 years earlier would've been nice since I'm 19. I have reverse down now and am working on turning. A lot of my friends and some random people I don't know say they've seen poi but didn't know what it really was. Poi is quite amazing and I believe it will be on of the BIG steps in my life I'll never forget. Thank you again for all of your help!

  • @Micakintyre Poi was certainly one of the more important things I've taken up, and certainly one of the most beneficial, I hope that poi will serve you in as many positive ways as it has me.

  • @NathanielEverist I do hope I'm not commenting too often. I can now spin both ways but I need to refine it to where I can practice it just as well as the three beat has become both forwards and backwards. I don't see how poi can lead to anything negative and its been very very positive so far. Again, you're awesome and out of everything I've learned I must say that poi has been the most enjoyable.

  • My poi consist of 2 long socks with a tennis ball inside. My intrest was easily swayed from watching my friend Kevin use fire poi. He put them out and let me have a go. I started with the two beat weave as in this video... I will be going back and learning the basics you've pointed out in your tutorials. I'm sure they will be more than helpful.

  • Hey thanks for posting your vids! I bought some play poi at Shambhala last summer and have been practicing, thanks to your simple to follow tutorials!

  • i seem to be having trouble with my left hand while its spinning. i can do 2, 3, and 5 beat weave just fine, but when i am just spinning my left hand curves into my body at right after the top of the arc

  • Thank you so much. This is the best beginner weave video I've seen. You explained so much I didn't understand.

  • help i cant get the hang of the reverse two beat weave. i can do forward pefectly fine and can do many other things forward but the reverse two beat weave is holding my progrestion back.

  • i like the man sound from you :D you live alone?

  • You are REALLY helpful <3 thank you for all of these begginer tutorials. I've been trying to learn (I use LED glowsticks; I rave) and most people who try to show me never break it down lol. Thank you SO much.

  • where do you live? the place you will at is

    awesome,nice view also

  • I live in the South Eastern Australian state of Victoria, it's a great place to live.

  • Great vid, I only started poi a few weeks ago, and the fact that you break everything down to the very basics really helps, especially to someone who is dyspraxic like me. I have found thatpoi is helping with my coordination.

  • Wow, it's amazing how many people I hear from with dyspraxia, and to think I hadn't heard of it a year ago. Yes, poi is great for increasing communication between each hemisphere of the brain, so it helps with disorders that involve difficulty in brain-communication, like dyslexia. Many of the recommended coordination exercises for such conditions are very similar to poi movements.

  • So I'm glad to hear that poi is helping, and if it's any encouragement to continue, a friend of mine with dyspraxia had trouble learning the basics of poi, but as her coordination improved, she found it easier and easier to learn new moves. Last I saw of her she was getting pretty darn good.

  • Unfortunately, it's just something that comes with practise. Try practising with just one hand at a time until you get it really smooth with each hand, then try going really slowly and trying just the one rotation of each and then two, and three and so on until it stops troubling you.

  • Yay, got it today! Thanks for the help, now i'm moving to the three beat wave. We'll see how hard it will be.. =)

  • Crap, I forgot the question I was going to ask? Where are you? My first guess would be South America...

  • South America? No, that would be lovely though. No, I live in Victoria, a South Easternly state of Australia.

  • Wow, thank you for putting all these videos on YouTube. You make it so easy to understand! I'm a big fan of staff spinning but I thought I'd try poi as well. Thanks!

  • you are a legend. I've always wanted to learn something like this and you're making it so easy!

  • oh my ty so much 4 posting these lessons... so easy to understand

  • Most exultant tutorial. Simple and easy to understand. I did a workshop the other day with some "experienced" spinners and I asked all of them to perform a 2 beat weave and surprisingly only one person could still remember how to do it. Lol, as we progress one must not forget the basics.

  • Too right, it's funny how people forget how to do the basics, the three beat just becomes such second nature that making your arms uncross that beat early feels wierd.

  • Your video is really easy to follow and i definitely got the 2bt going forward but when i try it in reverse i keep hitting my butt and when i try holding my arms crossed while spinning i just... repeatedly hit my butt...i'm not entirely sure what i'm doing wrong.

  • If you're hitting your bottom it means that your planes are becoming warped when you cross your arms. This is usually caused by moving your arms too laterally accross your body and too far from your body and the centrofugal force is causing the poi to flay outwards. In other words, focus on vertical movements, not horizontal, make your you're hands are moving diagonally and as upwards or downwards as possible, rather than horizontally accross your body. Hope this helps.

  • I`ve done this in 2 days..all by myself..i think i`m a fast learner..but i don`t get it how do you spin them in reverse

  • same , me too .

  • it's just like crosses reverse just it's a sort of scooping motion with the right hand

  • i taught myself the two beat weave al by my self a couple of years ago and i did it in those exact steps. :)))

  • Aha! Familiar! Try this with swords...then this...both work!!

  • HHHEELLPP ME i dont know if i am doing this right idont think my split time is actually in split time

  • You should feel that your poi are in split time because the beats will feel nice and even, if in doubt, look at yourself in a reflection and you should see the two at opposite ends of the circumference of the circle your poi are spinning. Basically, while one is high, the other will be low.

  • the two beat also has another alt name which its also pretty common, The Chase because the hands are chasing each other

  • True, but that isn't used to much anymore, as it leads to confusion with same-direction split-time, which is also commonly called the chase, because the poi heads chase each other.

  • yeh true that, might just be over here that we use that then, im in WA

  • I am confused however on when I turn. If I'm doing a forward 2 beat (left hand on top) and turn 180 to the reverse, which hand should end up on top when I complete the turn?

  • If you're turning with a 2 beat, you should have your arms crossed when you turn, and uncross them when you are facing your new direction and continue. I recommend moving onto the 3 beat weave if you've got the 2 beat down in both directions, because that video shows you how to turn, and it's exactly the same as turning with a 2bt.

  • I'm a stringer and I learned all of my moves forward all the way up to the 3 beat weave. Then I tried to turn my 3 beat weave in a 180 turn and then I realized that I should have learned my moves backwards too cause I couldn't complete the turn.. This REALLY helped man I can do 2 beat reverse now. Thanks. Gonna try to move on to 3 beat reverse.

  • Oh and by the way.. SUBSCRIBED! Def. doing good stuff man.

  • Cheers man, good to see more stringers looking at my videos, I'm heavily string influenced, so I've got a bit of an affinity with stringers.

  • I got it. just how to do it in fowrad move.

Thanks man~ I will make confortable move it

    ^^*

  • thanx for the lesson.i am now able to do the two beat wave thanx 2 u.but am having difficulty swapping leading arms when motion is not in sync. do you have any tips that may help?

  • The best advice I can give you, that applies to any poi move that you'll want to learn, it to practice with one hand at a time. So, put down one of the poi, and do the actions while only holding one, then swap hands and repeat. Do that until it feels completely natural, and then try and do it with both hands. Focus on the movements your arms are making, and try and replicate that when you have both poi. And do it as slow as possible. Good luck.

  • Thanks so much! I've been teaching myslef poi, probably only been going for 2 hours all together and was utterly lost as to where to go after basic spinning and crossing until i found your videos. Still getting two beat wave perfected but the basics are there...

Thanks again and keep up the good work!

  • Yeah, it's always better to work up from basic levels, not just in poi but in anything in life. As the classic saying goes, "you've got to learn to crawl before you can walk"

  • lol i always cryed when my parents put meon the ground and i never crawled so they just ignored me until i walked like they did... so i never crawled.. though it took ame a long time to get 3 beat down im not gonna skip crawling at anything else anytime soon =)

  • thank you thank you thank you for having this video...it finally clicked for me once I saw this and I can do it! On to the three-beat weave!

  • :) Thank you, I'm glad it was of help. I hope my videos continue to help you learn. All the best.

  • Either that, or set up a poi wiki.

  • That's an idea, maybe when I've got a spare day or two I'll do that.

  • ....wouln't that just be a split time cross over? not a weave...? cause your not really weaving anything, anyways, good explantion.

  • Some call it that, some call it a 2 beat weave. I'll be sure to add that into the alternative naming, I forgot about that. Lots of disputes over terminology in the poi world...

  • lol, so true, I see a trick, them try searching everything i think it could possibly be called. :)

  • That's a good idea, it can get pretty messy out there. I hate seeing people get into disputes over the terminology of something. The poi community really should just make a set "dictionary" of move names, to put and end to the confusion.

  • *Nod-Head-So-Much-It-Falls-Off* I agree.
