I wondered if the story had homosexual themes. It almost certainly does not from a scholarly angle. Is it a story of love, real love? Absolutely, but not erotic, rather it is platonic. It is supposed to show the goodness of Johnathan, who despite David threatening his future power, loved David unconditionally. It is also a story tinged with real tragedy, as Johnathan was killed by Philistines defending his country.
If it had been a gay relationship it would have been used against David.

It speaks for itself, and Saul's remarks about their intimate relationship mentioned repeatedly in the Bible that they could not keep secret should be regarded in this context. I did read it, it was an interesting topic for me. I just do not see it, it is dangerous to take out interpretation of the passage in question because its use of language is likely coming off as erotic when it was not meant to be in its original context...
Kissing for example, viewed today as highly erotic. A guy kissing another guy, almost always sexual. Back then, nothing farther from the truth. Also, there are common euphemisms for sex that never show up.
So, you are right, the verse speaks for itself, and sexuality is not mentioned in any passage dealing with this relationship. If there was sex, it would talk about it, most books of the Bible are not coy about dealing with sexual intimacy and mention it taking place without so much as a blush.
The relationship here is a common misconception that could be avoided if the reader would take into account the difference in culture as well as what language would be used for sexual intimacy.

Between Lev.18:22 and 20:13 is Lev. 20:9 which calls for the brutal killing of children cursing their parents. This is one of MANY examples making Mosaic law morally uphorrrid now. And I am not saying He put the homosexuality into people, but He certainly has allowed it. It is a part of His divine economy and will remain so, at least until He returns to make all things new. Second we know they weren't because the men of Sodom asked for the "MEN" (speaking of the Angels) that went into Lot's house Gen 19:5. I notice you haven't given a reason why 20:23 does not pertain to 20:13; for the passage describes the verses before it as descriptive of the Pagan sins and rituals.
God does indeed abhor sodomy; for sodomy literally means 'Sin of Sodom' and that, brother, is homosexual rape.

watertower12, here are some of the modern English translations of 1st Corinthians 6:9....homosexuals (New King James Version)....homosexuals(New American Standard Bible)....those who practice homosexuality(New Living Translation)....homosexual offenders(new International Version)....those who participate in homosexuality(Amplified Bible)...men who practice homosexuality(English Standard Version)...etc It is found in so many English versions that it cannot be any clearer.
I've actually read where some of the translators have said that publishers will not publish a Bible unless the translation specifically denounces homosexuality, because then people will not buy that translation. So basically it comes down to profits, as does everything else these days,

What leviticus is doing is laying down the customs for the jewish preists. there is some debate on if this is just for priests not to use temple prostitutes, or to not have sex with a man in a woman's bed. or to not have sex with a woman right after having sex with a man, because that could spread disease. They did not have condoms back then (or refrigerators thus the shellfish thing)

And these translations are done by qualified bible scholars. I wondered if the story had homosexual themes. It almost certainly does not from a scholarly angle. Is it a story of love, real love? Absolutely, but not erotic, rather it is platonic. It is supposed to show the goodness of Johnathan, who despite David threatening his future power, loved David unconditionally. It is also a story tinged with real tragedy, as Johnathan was killed by Philistines defending his country.
If it had been a gay relationship it would have been used against David.

It speaks for itself, and Saul's remarks about their intimate relationship mentioned repeatedly in the Bible that they could not keep secret should be regarded in this context. Lack of space here, so read the section on David & Jonathan on Wikipedia and you can make your own decisions. It presents both sides of the argument.

I did read it, it was an interesting topic for me. I just do not see it, it is dangerous to take out interpretation of the passage in question because its use of language is likely coming off as erotic when it was not meant to be in its original context...
Kissing for example, viewed today as highly erotic. A guy kissing another guy, almost always sexual. Back then, nothing farther from the truth. Also, there are common euphemisms for sex that never show up.

So, you are right, the verse speaks for itself, and sexuality is not mentioned in any passage dealing with this relationship. If there was sex, it would talk about it, most books of the Bible are not coy about dealing with sexual intimacy and mention it taking place without so much as a blush.
The relationship here is a common misconception that could be avoided if the reader would take into account the difference in culture as well as what language would be used for sexual intimacy.

Between Lev.18:22 and 20:13 is Lev. 20:9 which calls for the brutal killing of children cursing their parents. This is one of MANY examples making Mosaic law morally uphorrrid now. Christ said nothing in the Gospels about homosexuality. Paul spoke of the practice in reference to prostitution and pegan rituals rather than ANY adult manogamous union. But he DID say women were forbidden by God to speak in church in 1 Cor. 14:34-37, which is ignored by churches now, which MAY be in sin for doing so

I've actually read where some of the translators have said that publishers will not publish a Bible unless the translation specifically denounces homosexuality, because then people will not buy that translation. So basically it comes down to profits, as does everything else these days,

What leviticus is doing is laying down the customs for the jewish preists. there is some debate on if this is just for priests not to use temple prostitutes, or to not have sex with a man in a woman's bed. or to not have sex with a woman right after having sex with a man, because that could spread disease. They did not have condoms back then (or refrigerators thus the shellfish thing)

two guys can love each other very strongly, even to a bond like a marriage, but the bible does not give them right to have sex with one another. i have strong bonds with friends there is nothing wrong with it, you don't have to have sex to love one another.

This is entirely true. But it's also true that sex, even homoerotic male/male sex, does not automatically ruin a strong friendship between guys.
I'd argue that David and Jonathan should be understood as "bi-curious jack-off buddies" -- Exodus & Leviticus clearly ban fudgepacking, but they also leave room for two masculine soldiers to trade kisses & handjobs on a cold night.

To expand on the "no fudgepacking" comment: any Orthodox Jewish rabbi will tell you that in "If a man lies down with a man AS WITH A WOMAN, they shall both be put to death," (Lev. 20:13 -- not Exodus, my bad!) the "as with a woman" part is meant to specify the sin of one man using another man's butthole as a pseudo-vagina.

Some people think that "as with a woman" is meant to exclude the case of two guys sharing a blanket with no hanky-panky. However, consider that the ban on bestiality in Lev 18:23 uses a similar euphemism about "lying with an animal" (and certainly a shepherd could huddle next to his sheep for warmth), but does NOT add "...as a man lies with a woman." Similarly, the verses banning incest don't say "a man shall not uncover his sister's nakedness AS A HUSBAND UNCOVERS HIS WIFE'S NAKEDNESS."

So, in short, "as with a woman" is not meant to distinguish "Platonic bed-sharing" from "sexual bed-sharing"; it distinguishes one type of male/male sex, namely anal penetration, from all the other kinds. And this isn't a crazy liberal reading; it's the Orthodox Jewish view based on the Talmud.
Mind you, Orthodox Judaism DOES consider non-anal man2man sex, as well as well as lesbian action in general, to be serious sins (especially for Jews) -- but FAR LESS "abominable" than butt-banging!

My point is that there are parts of the Bible which don't seem relevant today (unless you can explain to me why having sex with women on their period is evil - and don't say "because it's in the Bible") and that I don't think that after 2000 years every word in it can be God's law. The Church has had too much power for too long to resist changing and reinterpreting the Bible, so perhaps instead of thinking "the Bible says gays are evil, so it must be true," try to consider what your own ...

morals and understanding of God lead you to conclude. Surely after so many translations and rewritings it is to be expected that at least bits of the Bible are to be taken with a pinch of salt, and that's assuming that the original copy was exactly God's word and not an interpretation written by men. I just don't see how we can all blindly "go follow the Bible" and assume that that's the same as being good Christians.

I know the Bible doesn't explicitly say "Jonathan and David were in love and had sex," but based entirely on mooeypoo's explanation of the language used, especially the sexual conotation of the "mother's nakedness" bit, it seemed to suggest that very strongly. And I don't personally know any examples of men being utterly devoted to each other (as I think we agree they were) in a totally asexual relationship.
