oh, Isn't that Sabah playing darabuka? She was one of the original belly dancer's in NYC's amazing 8th Ave & 27?th St Greek and Middle Eastern music scene in the late 50s and 60s
What a wonderful surprise. I remember Lazaros & Periklis from the many gigs sponsored by the Balkan Arts Center and its successor the Ethnic Folk Arts Center in NYC. Lazaros was great as a vocalist, laouto player and defi player. And I remember you "duffali" with your defi and karsilamas and North Indian dance. Lazaros and Periklis along with Achilleas and Petroloukas made many recordings in the States: 78s, 45s, LPs, cassettes - Epirotika at its finest. I have my iTunes loaded with them.
What wonderful memories to see/listen to Lazaros. I recall him from Astoria's Bohemia park, and Delvinaki, along with Pericles, Petroloukas, Achilleas. We will never see their kind again. I once stayed a night in Petroloukas's house in Delvinaki as a guest. Can someone tell me where Petroloukas' son John lives now? I haven't seen him in years. Lazaros used to enjoy trying to speak Vlahika language with me as he knew a fair amount, though of course not nearly perfectly. And so did Pericles.
I know what you mean, its true with each generation the way they play the music changes. For example the old music that Pericles loved listening to from the video that was made in America is probably very hard to enjoy today.I think with the way the world has become in this digital age with mobile phones, video cameras, computers etc , we have diverted in our interests and alot of the mystery has been lost.
Sorry for asking again but has Kosta Harisiades past away too?.In america is there much demand for klarino or are the Greeks more or less not interested just like in Australia. Is there anywhere in this modern technical world that we live in where some of the music that Lazaros played has been recorded, can be bought or listened to. I went in many shops in Athens and didnt see any, plenty with Petro Louka however. Your right by playing his music one keeps his memory alive
kali mepa. Kosta Harisiades died about a year before Lazaros. I pray they are making music together in another diminsion. It doesn't seem this world appreciates their art these days. Petro Louka is Lazaros nephew and is doing great in continuing the tradition, but it seems to have lost something with the times.
Niki how are you related in the Harisiadis family. I played klarino with Kosta Harisiadis in my village of Drimades in Pogoniani,is Kosta still still living, I remember he used to cough alot, I think he was a smoker. They sometimes used to call him Kotcho Louka. Are you related to Andy. Its great to see Taki is carrying the tradition. I am from Melbourne Australia. A very long way indeed. I was born in Australia but this type of music in in my soul.
I was Lazaros wife for the past 43 years and Andy is our son, and we also have two grandchildren, Ben and Nicole. He is so deeply missed by all who knew him, and the only way of keeping his memory alive is by playing, and listening to his music. Thank you for your comments. Niki Harisiadis
Is perikli halkias still alive, also Duffali do you have any more of the older players like harisiadis, periklis, its very hard to find video clips of thes players. I am from Australia an epiroti and I adore these old guys. They had that wonderful old style thats not found today in the new generation of players
I am sorry to say that Pericles also passed away about a year before Lazaros. I don't know of any other videos. I will ask around. Thank you for your interest.
Hello: Are you a relative? I worked with Lazaro, Perikli, and Ahillea at the Ethnic Arts Center's festivals on several occasions. Lazaros was a good man.
Lazaros is a legend--is it true that he passed away recently. I hope some of the younger family members follow the style of music. How do you know him duffali
