Guys, ever guard does things and calls them different things differently. The first thing that is established in guard is respect. Respect for teammates, and for other guards, you guys should really respect that she is even teaching you.

In my guard, they're called rowboats

Y'know, every time I see colorguard videos, they always have those ugly tape marks on the poles. We never had them at our school b/c A. you should know where to put your hands and B. your left hand should usually be covering the cap at the bottom. I think having black tape on your flag is just distracting.

@aquarose6 If you can't take criticism, then you shouldn't be participating in competitive activities. HOWEVER, nothing I said was insulting or hurtful, and it certainly wasn't bragging. I only posted what I was taught about colorguard which, quite frankly, I think makes everything look much nicer. Also, I'd like to point out that I didn't say ANYTHING about the girl in the video, only the tape marks on the pole and a common way of holding the flag that I personally don't think looks good.

@sepifi well see now? that is a nicer way to make an opinion :). however in our marching band/color guard we werent allowed to criticize others. we were taught to be respectful, its more fun that way

@aquarose6 There's critiquing and there's criticizing. You can't get better at mastering any artistic skill without critiques. Criticism would be saying only mean, hurtful things about what someone does or how they look. Critiques are meant to be constructive and honest in order to help someone improve. I think it looks much better to not have the black tape on the poles and to have your hand cover the cap. I'm not saying that to be rude or mean, I'm just saying that because it looks nicer. :/

idk any moves called flourishes. we call those figure eights....we have butterflies and rowboats too, as far as other comments go, and our rowboats aren't arm motions

They aren't rowboats. Rowboats are arm movements.

Flourishes are butterflies. I've never heard the term flourish, but it's actually very easy. You just go down to the left on one, up on two, down on the right on three, and up to right shoulder on four.

So everyone has there own names for things, but flourishes are a wrist movement, not an arm movement. Those are usually called butterflies. These videos suck. I mean, they teach you, but incorrectly.

we dont do butterflies like that though...... we bring the flag down in front of us from left to right then bring it behind us right to left before bringing it back to the front. what do you call that if not butterfly?

wow, we call those figure 8s in our guard. our flourishes are done completely behind our head and back, and it makes a full circle.
