  • Je l'avais vu à la télévision il y a donc cinq ans déjà. Et j'ai eu envie de la retrouver. Incroyable prestation..

  • Anybody know how she gets that massive reverb? Id kill for that reverb...

  • Love

  • I wasn't sure at first, if I watching a Brazilian game show or the French version of "The Price Is Right?" But then it begins and PJ quickly destroys whatever thought you may have had before she starts singing. Clearly one of the best live performances ever made in recent memory. I'm surprised eye wear and water glasses didn't just start shattering all over the set! Now, that would have been funny!

  • She's amazing.

  • perfect

  • c une harpe,mais miniature

    i love u polly!

    une reine

    une deesse

    white shalk est magnifique!

  • damned ,que c'est beau !

  • she just played just like she knew it, and her environs didn't make a bit of difference.

  • comment s appelle cette instrument??

  • @DarkFacet Autoharp

  • @DarkFacet

    une cithare.....

  • How you can give such an intimate performance in such a surrounding is beyond me!

  • Bloody fantastic !!!

  • I totally love the depth and simplicity of this song ♥

but what's with the audience.. no emotion whatsoever

  • I adore her, I can't even say. I just adore her.

  • Wow That was fuckin awsome!

  • SENDS SHIVERS UP ME SPINE !!!!

  • what a great fucking artist, love her in this song, she grows far above any in this performance. bravo baby!!!!

  • amazing

  • Holy crap!!! Best voice ever!

  • I love her! This is the best video what I ever seen.... I love her.....

  • Bugs me that she never bothered her arse to learn to play the autoharp even slightly.

And yes, I know saying that makes me a sexist, artistically retarded, hate inspiring figure of dreadfulness who now deserves to be slagged off royally.

However, the undeniable fact of the matter is she's ham-fistedly punching it to bits and it sounds rubbish.

    Abuse time!!!!!

  • @ginbox Lol..Okay... you asked for it... You have that common muso thing of not understanding what the art of music actually is! Stop looking at the brush strokes, stand back and see all the separate colours and lines make the whole picture. You'll never see the beauty if you look at it under a magnifying glass!

  • @ginbox Ok she is strumming. But the right chords. At the right time, in the right order. And with enough of a rhythmic feel to drive the song along. And really its the voice that matters, the autoharp is secondary, there to support the voice only. I think she does a pretty good job.

  • @ginbox I think the point is, you might be right - but no-one cares . . .

  • @ginbox really??? i thought she made it sound great...but then again..i have no idea what an autoharp is supposed to sound like...i guess that is the benefit of being ignorant sometimes...you can just enjoy something without having to pick it to death...

  • I think I'd never fully realized how difficult this song is to sing, till I watched this live version. it sounds almost effortless on the album.

wonderful performance *__* love PJ more and more

  • yeah this performance trumps the album version of this song. this performance trumps just about everything lol. if back in 1991 or 2, you had shown me this piece of the future P.J. Harvey, I would have said, YES!

  • PERFECT.

  • wow.

    thats voice. masterpiece

  • wonderful, i cant say it in english really,

  • Not a great PJ Harvey fan and the album version of this song is spoiled by the fact that she isn't a very interesting piano player (sorry if that upsets some people but White Chalk sounded more like a set of demos than a fully realised work). This though this is a truly wonderful performance and definitely my top PJ moment ever.

  • @cwarn56 Totally agree with you! she is very talented but as far as White Chalk goes, not so much. Soap&Skin would be a better listen.

  • PJ Havey ftw >.<

  • putain q'elle est bonne

  • @themrnonickname Qui ? la black?

  • She could fly a 747 through the eye of a needle.....with ease.

  • wow, she has ho talent at all....

just kidding, this is insane! It's been a long time since i've been so touched by music... since alice in chains - would, and blind melon - dear ol' dad....

  • Lovely vocal quality.

  • Estoy enamorada de P.J Harvey!!

  • She captures the primitiveness of music. Like the heart beat of a drum circle. She translates the finer aesthetics of life, without reason. But none better yet, you crazy little fool living in the drudgery of your own clip.

  • I love this song, and she is performing it so magnificently.

  • i thank god for the existence of this women.

her voice, her songs, her look - she is just pure, real and natural beauty.

  • Man the French make my skin crawl

  • wow... goosebumps, tears and a smile... again: wow

  • best performance ever!

  • SOOOO great!!!!!!

  • no words can describe this.

  • I would sale my soul to DeVil if I could see Woodstock festival again!!!

  • PJ Arvey! hahahhah!! french people

  • @Kakica84 pleaaaaaase ... we know who is Polly Jean Harvey :)

    well "we" ... you understand.

  • Comment removed

  • @Kakica84 (oops, I realize ... yes, true, we don't pronouce the "h" ; that's it. (h)oney, (h)arvey, (h)ot, etc.)

  • @ATEKAmusic I think that Kakica84 is teasing you :p

  • wow, she is REAL

  • @standrewsday She is definitely REAL!

  • @Kakica84

try to speak french sure u can't pronounce a word!

  • @Loreleips hehe, any word you want, my friend.. I have been learning french for 8 years.. Don't get me wrong, I like the way they pronounce pj harvey, but it's always funny to me when I hear it. french and italian people d o n ' t w a n t to pronounce the letter "H" even though they are perfectly able to do it..

  • @Kakica84 We will when you pronounce the letter "R".

  • Thank you! proof that I can feel.

  • she' seems so much sadder/unhappy tha in her early days. i wish and hope she is happy

  • @jjfeighns well, she's melancholic, enjoying melancholy and the beauty of this. has nothing to do with "sadness" or "depression". don't confuse this!

  • Speechless...

  • What is that instrument called?

  • @shadowblack10 it's called an autoharp

  • Just proof that PJ is one of the greats.

  • the very first second I heard her 17 yrs ago I knew she was who i wanted to be just like. haven't looked back since.

  • She and Imogen Heap should do something together!!!

  • her voice is one of an angel

  • Souris1837 you're So right!!..She's an ARTIST.Perfect voice abilities and such a gifted person..

  • This show is damn annoying but it is worth waiting to hear pj harvey sing

  • "pi je arvé" hahahaha, the way the pronounce it

  • @janotosinnumeros we wouldn't understand someone pronoucing it the right way ;) ... but think about how hard it is for french people to understand foreign people saying "les champs élysées" ...

  • @ATEKAmusic Hahahaha, right, I know...I pronounce it right though...haha

  • This is one of the rare cases where the album version of the song failed to impress me, but the live performance just made me love the song. This sounds much better than the album version, IMHO.

PJ seems to have gotten more confident and better at performing solo - which is great, as her awesome vocals take center stage in solo performances.

  • @ThinkingSkeptically I agree. This is worlds better than the album version.

  • does anyone have any ideas of how to get the audio from this performance?

  • @FaultYesteryear downloaf free youtube to mp3, is very easy to find and use, and over all, is great!

  • @thesoftshiver thanks for letting me know!

  • love the album version, this is amazing too!

  • she is just the best - that's all

  • Personality one in a million , voice one in a billion , the combination of these two = 1

    Polly ...

  • Amazing! Musicianship!

    A rare commodity these days...

  • this version is astonishing. the new dynamic, not seen on the record, she is un touchable. really, beyond any kind of label or structure you try to hold her up against, it all pales.

  • hi ikchu i just want to say thanks for staying up and recording this. i think what you said in the info pretty much sums it all up :) thanks

  • this woman is simply awesome

  • This is so very very good.

  • Thank you, lkchu!!! :))))

  • :') She is just amazing. Wow..

  • que fuerte

  • BEAUTIFUL voice. Wow.

  • Wow the audience in the video...they just don't get it.

  • Näher an:Die Eine und Einzige kommt nur: Die Eine und Einzige!

  • I think she's a pure real artist. I Mean creative artist like painter, writer, sculptor... Not a bullshit pop star money maker like many others on music scene...

  • @souris1837

She is a sculptor, went to Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design .

  • the stomping <3

  • this is a stunning performance! THANK YOU!

  • what is this version of moog?does somebody knoes?

  • I recognised the name but had to look her up; is she really approaching forty in this video? Only, she looks about nineteen- twenty five.

    Super talent :P

and, although I don't know this show, I have seen some terribly pseudo-intellectual trash on French television.

  • I,m in love..An extraordinary woman..

  • A lot of DELAY n REVERB =)

  • "And the gods made love...." Just gorgeous! The best musical artist/songwriter on Planet Earth from 1992 to 2007. 'Nuff said.

  • she is captivating..

  • this version is better thean that one on album...but I like both very much...PJ is great!!!

  • pretty divine

  • wow

  • I DO LOVE HER, SERIUSLY I TELL U

  • PASSION.

  • this woman was given a gift ..no joke...unbeleivable

  • well said

  • I think Im in heaven

    PJ You are the best

  • Brilliant performance...one of the best i've seen...

  • i love you

  • What is that instrument? I know I've seen it before but never knew what it was called.

Incredible, even with all the effects on her voice. It's like a psychedelic prayer.

  • its an autoharp :)

  • Sorry if this is a late reply but its called a Zither.

  • @maya186 it's not a zither, It's called an Auto harp . there's a good description on wikipedia.

  • I still can't get over how good this is!! I can't think of any words to describe it! 3:00 :O I'm in tears here ;) she's SO good!!

  • I wasn't much of a fan of her latest album until I started seeing videos like this, it makes much more sense live.

  • This is great but god do i miss the old pj punk rocker.

  • Well, you know, any artist that has been in the music business for a while is bound to change their style sooner or later. Id imagine it would be terribly boring to have to play the same stuff over and over again. What really shows PJs genius is the fact that she remained amazing even after the change!

  • well I did not imply that one should play the same stuff. and i think you are wrong about this. there are many artists who have not changed their style. as long as it is honest music from the heart the style is not very significant. style is often something that distinguishes a performer though. if you did not hear her voice would you know this is her album? i doubt that i would be able to guess that.

also i do like more variety in an album though. the latest is still great but a tad homogenous.

  • Such beauty and sadness in this song.

  • Clearly a statement made by one destined to live out his/her entire life bitterly (and futilely) dreaming of accomplishing something this profound.

If you can't recognize the raw, heart-wrenching power of this performance, you will never recognize brillance, anywhere.

  • read my comment "again" then get back to me

  • Totally agree! I only wish the album version was remotely this good.

  • I think the album version is a lot better and more interesting composition.

  • What a ridiculous thing to say. This is an amazing perfromance, truly unique. Cold? What f***ing cold. But I suppose you're some sort of expert on nasal inflection. Luckily for you though, I'm an expert on audio speakers and yours are obviously broken.

  • Great upload. But the set is awful and the pink dress the presenter wears is...ugh!

  • CUDOWNE...Kocham JĄ.

  • fantastic song...

  • I feel like I just witnessed something magical. So pure, so honest. Everything music should be.

  • thanks for waiting so long and finally sharing the video :) 5/5

  • Simply pure brilliance! So simple and beautiful.

  • after 1 hour 40 minutes blablabla ---- "...made me realise even more deeply how much courage and purity it demands to create music like this, in this crappy artificial world that we live in."

I completely agree with you, and thank you for saying it! What a good way to describe her music style too...

  • Это охренительно волшебно. Вот это - ГОЛОС, я понимаю.

  • Голоса есть и получше, ВОЛШЕБСТВО - вот что главное.

  • very few artist are able to do such an amazing job when they perform live. This really gave me chills... She is so pure and true with what she does.

its absolutely stunning with which precicsion and passion she uses her voice. esp given the situation around her.. this clinic white studio with this people who probably never heard of her.

she really is a queen among all the crap...

  • After all those comments of vegism, I want to listen even more of Polly Jean! :D

Have a nice life veggie, PJ rules and there´s nothing you can do about it! Reply to my comment if you want to prove my point. Have a great day! :)

  • def.Vegism = clueless fuckwit

  • Hey dude, You're the one who has to move on.

You don't like her, get off! We like her, we listen to her. It's that simple. I just find amazing that you waist so much time with someone you can't listen to.

But hey, that's what charismatic artists do to people. She moves you in some way. It can be in the worst actually, yeah, but she moves you! Ironic :p Otherwise you just wouldn't bother. Now, get off and make yourself a favour - masturbation!

    take care!

  • "The reason I keep commenting is because you guys keep crying everytime I do, its entertaining."

    God, you're sick! LoOoOOOL :D

And it's nt all about sex with me. It's all about sex frustration about you :)

And if you like to comment talentless music now you can start posting something in a beefheart video. Go there and say that the biggest genious of all time didn't make good music or didn't know how to sing. I bet it'll be much more entertaining, really :D

enjoy my last reply, take care!

  • This song is better than a orgasmus

  • simply - fantastic ...

    she looks so young and so beautiful;

    amazing ...

  • More like "the big artist" is having an influence on Bat for Lashes...

  • Goddamnit lady in horrible pink with the fi-fi hairdo!! Shut the fudge up and let PJ Kick your pseudointellectual ass!!!

  • brilliant.

  • Thank you so much for staying up all night for this!!!

    ;-)

  • HAHHAHHA the people on this show don't have a fucking clue what this song means. Look at how bored the audience is!!

Wow, PJ and th folks on this show are like night and day......anyways, this is my favorite song of hers.

  • We've chipped in and got you a front row seat and anything you need!

  • Haunting, powerful, and mesmerizing. Her voice cuts right through me.

  • I've watched it countless times and still can't believe her voice is real!! Wow.

  • Of course it's her voice idiot. It's not true that the shittiest singers sound good with reverb. It can hide pitch problems a bit but you can't just throw it on and have instant perfection. Anyway, that's not even reverb, it's delay. It's even harder to sing with delay because if you mess up once you hear it as many times as the delay repeats. You obviously have no idea what you're talking about.

  • In very simple terms for you, delay is when what is put in is repeated like an echo, reverb is when artificial space is added. You can clearly hear that her voice is repeating like an echo, it does not sound like it is in some space. Like I said, delay obviously makes it harder to sing because it REPEATS audible flaws. You're wrong. Accept it dumbass. You are not an audio acoustics master. No one who knew what they were talking about would call themselves an "audio acoustics master."

  • Comment removed

  • Well, I listened to it on my laptop and it does appear to have a little delay, but I still think there is reverb. Sorry.

  • seems you've had some bad sexual expirience with some PJ fan...

  • oh i see. well they doesnt seem that much thin to me. but whatever.

  • sure, just dont understant the context.
