I knew a young lady who found out she was adopted; adopted by a lady who claimed to be her 'mom', turned out to be her foster parent. And, she had been baby-sit by her 'grandparents' who turned out to be her actual parents instead. She found all this out when she was 16. She became a runaway, left to herself, she became hyper-sexual, non-committed, unemotional, etc., bitch from hell. She was a co-worker for a time; don't know her anymore. A lot of this is complete bullshit. There are many medical conditions that people are born with, but "serial killer disease" is not one of them!!! The human mind is a piece of putty that can be molded into nearly any form. The mind is shaped by each person's unique set of life experiences in combination with their own sense of logic/meaning, which is organic and grows over time. People can take "wrong turns" & become monsters. Anyone can. That's just life.

@chandx7 back in those days, law enforcement agencies in different states didn't communicate. Ted Bundy was one of the reasons why there are nationwide databases now. When he appeared on the scene, the law enforcement system wasn't ready for him. But yeah, that was on them when he escaped.

Sure, you can be raised a certain way, but what a person is capable of, or what they have within them, ultimately determines what could happen in their future. He stated himself that he was raised in a nice, loving family, aside from the lies that he was told as a child about his grandparents and mother. Ted Bundy did not form into a psychopath - he was always one - he never showed his true potential until later in life.

@LordBifford You may be right but I've seen a lot of serial killer cases and ALL of them were because they had a 'screwed up childhood'. I have yet to see a case with the explanation: 'because he was 'born evil'.

Ted Bundy had a bad childhood filled with lies, disappointments and uncertainty which led him to be awkward and insecure. The rolling snowball got bigger with time which made him into an immoral killer. It wasn't because he was born evil.

@GADGETRONsc I agree. Not to mention that the excuse of "Oh, I was just born this way" is absolutely dispicable, it allows the guilty to evade taking responsibility for what they have CHOSEN to do. Whether or not he was born with a disorder of some sort is inconsequential; many people are born with disorders and not all of them are killers. It depends on the individual and what they personally are capable of, and also on whether or not something happens in their life to set them off.

Ted Bundy was not born to be a serial sex murderer, but he was born to be an aberrant individual and offender. He was born a sociopath. Not every sociopath is destined to kill. He had no conscience whatsoever, and in the course of his life became addicted to sexual torture and murder. He was not a sadist, but a sexual psychopath. He wanted to have his way with these women, and his total lack of conscience meant he was willing to murder them to get it.

@piepeace Anne Rule is a good writer, but she is deeply misleading when it comes to understanding Ted Bundy and his crimes. First and foremost Rule did not know Bundy nearly half as well as she claimed to. Far more scholarly and accurate portrayls of Bundy emerged in later works, particularly in The Only Living Witness. Bundy was never the intellectual, criminal genius Rule pretended he was, nor were his crimes motivated by revenge on Majorie Russell. That's pure fiction.
