i'm not saying one way or another, but you have to understand that these devices pick up signals transmitted through the air. and what else is transmitted through the air? millions of signals, from radio stations, cell phones, tv satellites, cb radios, and tons of other stuff is floating around us all the time that we can't hear that is not paranormal. any elecrtic signal sent through these things could be picked up on an evp so theres no evidence that what you hear is paranormal, but who knows?

Personally, if there are spirits in my living space, I'd like to know about it. They are there, whether you research them, or not. I did a handful of EVP recordings to hear what sounds like screams, then a male voice saying, "Uh... get off me!". From what I've heard, I have at least 3 spirits in my apartment.
The problem here is that you're straining to hear these so-called "Class C" whispers, trying to make out some word of phrase which may not be there. Same goes for being in a graveyard. You're looking for supposed "EVP" activity, and so a noise you hear must be proof of a ghost, because you're in a graveyard of dead people and your mic picked it up.
Worst of all, if you're an clueless amateur, mechanical noise from your recorder/poor quality speakers/microphones, etc. all affect what you hear.

Yeh, I get evp's on video too...I put it on my wave pad and listen to audio on the video and recorder. Neat. But, some, I'd rather not have listened too, but, what is done is done.
why would you be scared to do it in your house and not some one else's. As long as the ghosts in your home don't hurt you your fine. You shouldn't be scared either way. And secondly, get a digital recorder. There's less white noise and you can hear things more clearly. The mic picks up the tape rolling on analog recorders.
I agree, the only way you can use an analog recorder is with a remote mic at least 18"away from it. There's nothing worse than stumbling onto true EVP recordings only to have them stomped on by "whirrrrr....wheeeee....sqeeeeeeal."
And I think the reason some people are afraid to hear EVP's in their own house and not someone elses is once they "know what's there" , they have to continue LIVING with it.

The Sony Digital Voice Recorder is the best as it comes with a software program to take out all background noise the EVP's are clear and precise would'nt do a investigation without one~
BG noises are not words just sounds and really the human ear will quickly pick up on voices and actual words being spoken... but it would need to be heard several times by more than yourself to either confirm or debunk the sound. The software is for the purpose of uploading and cleaning up noise so that the human voice can be heard clearer mine is the Sony IC Recorder-SX700 hope this helped~
Ah ok, so you're not scrubbing or stripping the sound beFORE it's recorded. You're recording the entire sound then using the software to filter and screen so you can pick out things of interest? That makes sense, I was concerned that not all EVP is voices etc, (like a scraping sounds for instance) and didnt want to lose that "raw"data either. Sounds like a good device--I'll look it up, and thanks.

The rule about not taking home EVP's make sense for most beginners I guess, but once the fear has been conquered, doesnt it make sense to record where youre so familiar with all the sounds etc your house makes. Im just getting into all this. Fascinating stuff.
Well, as far as EVP's its been a while now, but at one time I had a tape recorder set by the bed, but for some other reasons. At about 3 am or so, there were some pretty strange sounds captured. Ghosts? Who knows... Tho I'm convinced I have ghosts here (for other reasons) I dont know if they were on tape those times. Time to record some more I guess, cuz...cuz... cuz I AINT AFRAID O' NO GHOSTS!!! :-p
totally agree with you once you can get past your fears your own home is a great source because the older home like our built in 29 has lots of EVP's you get used to them after awhile=)
hi! i do like to watch this video 'cause i have done 3 "EVP sessions" on my bedroom, one that is 7 minutes and the other 2 that are 10 minutes but i don't captured anything... I do prefere to capture something creepy of stay here on the absolulty silence... because i know that they were here on another moment and they can't really hurt me, but i'll keep trying, it'll be nice find some evidences.

Why microcasette recorder and not some kickass high quality digital recorder or something ? State of the art tools would ensure you get as clear voice as possible.

Kat, I'd like to add that you create DVD masters of everything you've done in what you think would be a logical order from a video introducing you and your group, thru each area you are knowledgable about and sending copies of it to producers, directors, etc in Hollyweird, NY, Austin, etc. I am SURE you will get a contract. Katrina, this is by far the best explanation of, and tutorial about EVP that I have ever seen. Only thing I might add is that a digital recorder will give a much higher quality recording than tape; as you know analog tape recordings have a certain level of tape hiss. Sometimes tape picks up things digital doesn't however, and sometimes digital will record what tape will not. I worked in TV & radio long time; you r outstanding & should look into producing an actual series 4 TV; find a producer!

External microphones help filter out alot of hissing and get the microphone away from your clothing. They also eliminate recording the internal mechanical noises made by the recorder itself.
In my opinion from doing this for several years, Olympus makes the best recorders too. Don't buy a cheap WalMart recorder!!!!
To me, it would only have meaning if tied to a location or event and if what was heard somehow corroborated what i might know of the history behind it. I'm skeptical of the whole concept, but the point is that random findings would be far more subject to interpretation. Just looking for voices would be easy to find, if voices are the only goal. i guess i wouldn't find a snippet of conversation proof of anything. i need more than that. Just opinion and no offense intended.
What's the point? So, you set it up, get what may be a "once human" voice and maybe even a "message". Then what? i find this technique completely useless in and of itself. If there is no purpose, other than to "hear",. Is it just a lark or what?

Context is the only thing that gives it meaning to me. Even then... eh.
15 minute clips at a time is not neccessarily good, in the time you are sitting and listening you could be missing something, I let one recorder run for upwards of 6 1/2 hrs, this work not, avoidance of it. If you gonna gather evidence do the work cutting corners is just not always good advise. I've gotten EVP's and I'm glad I did this because, yes the time in between can be long but I would've missed many sounds otherwise.

I have a deceased family member who I'm very close with say "Ok" in response to a question. It is very clear and it not my voice. I recorded it on a IC Recorder (digital recorder).
Maybe in the near future, but I don't think that the technology is up to par at the moment. I would use an external tape recorder with an external microphone (cheap, $10 at WalMart). Small, embedded mikes in phones and cameras pick up too much internal "noise" (the sounds of the recorder recording, for example).

Yes you only need a recorder, I suggest digital because its easy to use and no tapes, also the sound quality is better. A good audio cleaning program would be good too, but they can get expensive, so try to find a free one.
Digital is not necessary the way to go, I suggest you use both. We caught more evps in 30min on tape than a very popular TV show caught in 2 seasons using Digital.

You can buy a stereo plug(Radio shack model 42-223) and adapter(If needed. radio shack model 274-244) that pulgs from your cassette recorder into your computer stereo in or microphone in. Look under your computers programs button for a setting called "sound recorder"(Click Start/All Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Sound Recorder) and a box should pop up. Just record the section you want and then save the file. You can import it into audacity after that for editing. Hope this helps.

I recently bought a digital recorder and put it in my bedroom for awhile one day. I caught a very creepy evp in there. The voice sounded sinister and you can't tell what it's saying. The rule about not taking home EVP's make sense for most beginners I guess, but once the fear has been conquered, doesnt it make sense to record where youre so familiar with all the sounds etc your house makes. Im just getting into all this. Fascinating stuff.

Well, as far as EVP's its been a while now, but at one time I had a tape recorder set by the bed, but for some other reasons. At about 3 am or so, there were some pretty strange sounds captured. Ghosts? Who knows... Tho I'm convinced I have ghosts here (for other reasons) I dont know if they were on tape those times. Time to record some more I guess, cuz...cuz... cuz I AINT AFRAID O' NO GHOSTS!!! :-p

totally agree with you once you can get past your fears your own home is a great source because the older home like our built in 29 has lots of EVP's you get used to them after awhile=)

hi! i do like to watch this video 'cause i have done 3 "EVP sessions" on my bedroom, one that is 7 minutes and the other 2 that are 10 minutes but i don't captured anything... I do prefere to capture something creepy of stay here on the absolulty silence... because i know that they were here on another moment and they can't really hurt me, but i'll keep trying, it'll be nice find some evidences.
and i do Love Ghost Hunters (and international), my mother made download of 3 seassions of it, nice!!

Why microcasette recorder and not some kickass high quality digital recorder or something ? State of the art tools would ensure you get as clear voice as possible.

One last thing: I'd love to hear more stories of your experiences, what you have learned about life after death, human spirits vs others, what you believe happens to us after death, why it seems there is so much paranormal activity going on now, what you believe about UFO's, etc. I used to live in Austin, Georgetown, Lago Vista; sure miss The Oasis! I live in Abilene now; hope to move back there someday. Do you have any psychic abilities? What about OOB travel? Keep it coming, I'll be watching!

Kat, I'd like to add that you create DVD masters of everything you've done in what you think would be a logical order from a video introducing you and your group, thru each area you are knowledgable about and sending copies of it to producers, directors, etc in Hollyweird, NY, Austin, etc. I am SURE you will get a contract. You have genuine talent and you will be very successful if you do this and learn to manage success once you do. Take care of those who help you get there. I wish you the best

Katrina, this is by far the best explanation of, and tutorial about EVP that I have ever seen. Only thing I might add is that a digital recorder will give a much higher quality recording than tape; as you know analog tape recordings have a certain level of tape hiss. Sometimes tape picks up things digital doesn't however, and sometimes digital will record what tape will not. I worked in TV & radio long time; you r outstanding & should look into producing an actual series 4 TV; find a producer!

External microphones help filter out alot of hissing and get the microphone away from your clothing. They also eliminate recording the internal mechanical noises made by the recorder itself.
In my opinion from doing this for several years, Olympus makes the best recorders too. Don't buy a cheap WalMart recorder!!!!

To me, it would only have meaning if tied to a location or event and if what was heard somehow corroborated what i might know of the history behind it. I'm skeptical of the whole concept, but the point is that random findings would be far more subject to interpretation. Just looking for voices would be easy to find, if voices are the only goal. i guess i wouldn't find a snippet of conversation proof of anything. i need more than that. Just opinion and no offense intended.

What's the point? So, you set it up, get what may be a "once human" voice and maybe even a "message". Then what? i find this technique completely useless in and of itself. If there is no purpose, other than to "hear",. Is it just a lark or what?

15 minute clips at a time is not neccessarily good, in the time you are sitting and listening you could be missing something, I let one recorder run for upwards of 6 1/2 hrs, this work not, avoidance of it. If you gonna gather evidence do the work cutting corners is just not always good advise. I've gotten EVP's and I'm glad I did this because, yes the time in between can be long but I would've missed many sounds otherwise.

I have a deceased family member who I'm very close with say "Ok" in response to a question. It is very clear and it not my voice. I recorded it on a IC Recorder (digital recorder).

Maybe in the near future, but I don't think that the technology is up to par at the moment. I would use an external tape recorder with an external microphone (cheap, $10 at WalMart). Small, embedded mikes in phones and cameras pick up too much internal "noise" (the sounds of the recorder recording, for example).

Is there any danger in recording EVP's in a cemetery? I recorded 6 and some of them scared me. Do the spirits know you are there? One called out my dogs name. It was a man's deep voice. I hadn't even said my dog's name. Please comment back!

Yes you only need a recorder, I suggest digital because its easy to use and no tapes, also the sound quality is better. A good audio cleaning program would be good too, but they can get expensive, so try to find a free one.

Digital is not necessary the way to go, I suggest you use both. We caught more evps in 30min on tape than a very popular TV show caught in 2 seasons using Digital.

Hey Katrina, I really dig what you're doing, I'm into ghost an evp research as well, It's very interesting and exciting , especially when you get a hit. For those of you who read these comments and then insult our practice and research on the paranormal, don't knock it till you try it! I do have a question for katrina, Q: How can we clean up evp's and input them into our pc's if using analog recorders and using audacity? AND...can you do a step by step vid on this subject, "how to clean up evps"

You can buy a stereo plug(Radio shack model 42-223) and adapter(If needed. radio shack model 274-244) that pulgs from your cassette recorder into your computer stereo in or microphone in. Look under your computers programs button for a setting called "sound recorder"(Click Start/All Programs/Accessories/Entertainment/Sound Recorder) and a box should pop up. Just record the section you want and then save the file. You can import it into audacity after that for editing. Hope this helps.

I recently bought a digital recorder and put it in my bedroom for awhile one day. I caught a very creepy evp in there. The voice sounded sinister and you can't tell what it's saying. I'm afraid to sleep in there now. I wish I would have found this video before I tried recording evps in my home! YIKES!

I've also been hooked on stuff like that since I was like, nine or ten. I remember I saw an episode of "Mystery Hunters" and it was just so interesting to me. I think I'm gonna do my own EVP sometime :) Oh, and thanks, Katrina, for that warning about not doing the stuff in your own home. Right before you said that I was planning to do it right beside my bed like you said you did lol. Good thing you stopped me or I'd probably be terrified to sleep in it, as my house is over 100 years old :P
