  • Also, my old alienware laptop used to hang on BRD effects, even when they were off screen, and near telepoint crystals, but I think that was the sound card. I don't think it could handle the number of concurrent sounds XI was throwing at it.

  • I've had trouble with QoS, IPv6, and the VirtualBox network adapter. I didn't have any of this trouble until I started using a new netbook with Windows7. I think it may be related to the way W7 handles networking, and with low CPU speed.

  • Disabling QoS instantly fixed the stuttering for me, good job.

  • Confirmed. Disabling "HID-compliant consumer control device" one by one did the trick for me. The effect was instantaneous after disabling one of them, while running FFXI in the background.

    Notes: CPU = Core 2 Duo E6400 // OS = Windows 7 64-bit

  • @Caz53 Does not work

  • @doomtrigger Yeah, I don't think there is a single fix for this. It will be different for lots of people. Some people are saying its HID, others QoS. And others have said it is the way that the newer video cards process older content i.e. inefficiently. I've noticed that disabling my HID decreases my symptoms, but after playing with it for a while now, I have noticed some micro-stuttering.

  • @Caz53 im really starting to think its cpu related because i used a old ati radeon X850 gt and it was still stuttering

  • i had this problem 10 minutes ago, game ran fine until i turned laptop on today. disabled/uninstalled QoS and its fixed.

  • No wireless, just wired. This happens on XP(32/64), Vista(32/64) & Win7(32/64).

I have x2 Ethernet ports on this rig, however only 1 is used but both of which have had all non essential stuff (QoS etc) turned off in there settings during testing.

This problem never used to happen; it cropped up during a game update a little over a year back. As I said, the FFXI support team have openly admitted to me over the phone that they are aware of this issue but have no intention of fixing it.

  • After trying every trick and fix for this issue I have still not been able to resolve it. However, during my research it's become apparent that mostly everyone has a few things in common:

    - 64bit Operating System

    - Native 64bit Quad Core CPU (6600 - 6800 etc)

I firmly believe that the game has issues running in 32bit emulation on Quad Core CPU's.

I'm currently in touch with SquareEnix support regarding this matter. Will update on how it goes. Not holding my breath though. Lazy support.

  • I believe it is poorly written 64-bit network card drivers that cause the system to die when QoS is running.

  • Problem is, even with QoS completely disabled on a fresh OS install and only FFXI installed for testing purposes, this still happens. I've also tried/tested multiple network & chipset drivers over the last year and a half and none have failed to fix the problem.

This game just does not like either 64bit operating systems or 64bit hardware.

Unfortunately FFXI Support is aware of this issue that many of us are having but have no plans to fix it... EVER.

    FFXVI can't come soon enough.

  • My system seems to be the same as yours: 64 bit - Quad core. Here is a question: Do you have a wired and wireless connection? Try disabling QoS on all your network connections regardless of whether they are on or not. It was the QoS on the wireless connection which was causing the issues for me rather than the wired connection.

I am not sure I want to get dragged into another big game ^^. I really do want to explore FFXIV, especially the water city with ivory bridges.

  • QoS and HID fixed it for me!

  • Ok after a whole day of trying to fix this, and trying everything I have read. I finally found a solution.

It was one very small post by one user that I dismissed because it sounded silly...

Go to Device Manager (Right click My Computer and go to Properties) and disable every "HID-Compliant Device" listing under Human Interface Devices. This should fix the stutter. Then reenable them one by one, checking each time. I narrowed it down to 3 of them. Now FFXI runs perfectly with them 3 disabled!

  • Everyone uses HIDs. A mouse is a HID. Just disabling your HIDs is just a quick fix solution and you're only covering up the real problem. I would suggest users actually find the real problem and not randomly disable devices.

  • Yes, I realise a mouse and keyboard are both HIDs. But for some reason my PC had 6 "HID-Compliant Device" listed. None of which were my mouse or keyboard (They appeared further down the list). So disabling those devices fixed the problem (For me and many others) without affecting anything. So im happy :)

I apologize for my earlier comment, I was pissed off and the thought that it could have been my brand new 1TB HD did not appeal to me! lol

  • holy crap.... that worked... 0.0 i had like 8 different ones, which made no sense 0,o

  • I solved this problem on my side by disabling the QoS thingy under network settings. Hope this helps some of you ;)

  • I figured out that it was my cell phone charger. I have a Sony Ericcson 580i and you can charge it through the computer while transferring music.. thats what was doing it. I just unplug my cell and it stops.

  • Well, isn't that conveniant. o.o

  • lucky, it still does it for me...

  • I have this same problem when i run my ffxi with windower mode but its work fine in normal full screen mode. Any idea how to fix it?

  • P.S.

    Norton sucks.

  • A lot of people seem to be having this problem.

The most obvious would be your CPU is taking on too much at once.

To fix, buy a faster CPU, or don't run so many things at once.

  • Lol, i have this same issue and I am running a 3.2GHz Quad Core. Your suggestion is just stupid.

  • My post was directed at the majority and is correct in that context. Assuming my answer was suited to everyone was your own stupidity, not mine.

  • Just to add, final fantasy problems are rarely GFX related, as it runs mostly off your CPU.

  • ya i just got this problem after moving home from college. I tried disablin qos packet scheduler, i turned off hard drive indexing , and disabled kaspersky still no fix and its not v card related because it was working the day before with no software changes same drivers.

  • This happens whenever some program is accessing the hard drive that you have ffxi installed on (from my experience, that is). Either you can try installing on another drive, if you have one (But who wants to update the whole thing? Eww), or you can try to find what's accessing the disc, or even just experiment with closing certain things in the system tray (not my fault if you bone your PC, et cetera) and see if it stops.

  • You don't need to update the whole thing again, you can just copy the whole folder. Also it's not because another program is accessing the HDD, it's because the CPU doesn't have the power to render the scene constantly - and do additional background processing.

  • I have this same exact problem but I don't have Norton installed. Has anyone isolated the problem to be another program?

  • mine does this too on the main screen where it displays water

  • Just like to add something.. I know its terrible quality but I just wanted to get this uploaded quick. Those who know FFXI, and those with a keen eye will be able to notice the constant pause every other second or so. It rarely effects the sound.
