While I'm sure the screen stretching option will satisfy those who don't know any better, I cannot abide things being the wrong aspect ratio. I could have stretched a 4:3 out to 16:9 on my TV if I had wanted to do that anyway. Other than making it old like the SNES, I can't understand why they would have made it 4:3 anyway. Most people have widescreen nowadays, and all new TVs are 16:9. So what's the point?
There's nothing "kinda sad" about not having top down or 3D sections. Those were the worst parts of Contra, so less of them and more 2D run and gun is better.

I have Mega Man 9 and will be picking up Mega Man 10, and now I definitely want to get this game. The one complaint I have is that you can select the amount of lives you want in the options menu. I wish to add to the nostalgia they would have had you input a secret code to start off with 30 lives. :D

*sigh* No. I won't. As much fun as this looks, I'm not buying it. Why? Because I'm tired of games today leeching on the past. If gaming is going to go anywhere some franchises are going to have to die and make way for new ones. Contra, unfortuantely, is on this list.

They should NEVER give you unlimited continues (unless if optional), most of all, in a CONTRA game! Contra is supposed to be hard as hell, balls to the wall, addictive and fun action
well i think its good but i think they should at least tell you how many continues u used so u can train in the stages u struggled and then go with limited continues and its ass kicking time. KInda like metal slug, although that games spoiled me, cuz i kept dying in contra 1
YES! Contra is a lot like the old ninja gaiden games. The contra games are not nearly as hard (as long as you don't rush!), but they are still very good, and well worth your time and money. So pick this one up, and also the old virtual console ones (the best one is the one for the SNES, although both the NES ones are great, and so is the genesis & GB version). I don't know which ones are out for VC yet, but do get all the ones that are on there, you won't regret it.
The first one is harder, but it's also a better paced game. Go for that one. Both are great tough, so if you have the money, get both (and the SNES version).
And a small piece of advice: (almost) Always kill everything that can shoot before you move forward, and don't rush. Kill anything that is a threat. This way the game will be challenging, but not extremely hard. Once you have beaten the game a few times this way, you can start to do fast runs.
Here's another continuity issue...Yagyu was a black guy in Neo Contra and now he's a Japanese guy.
Also, Brownie was a "male" robot in Contra: Hardcorps and now he's a she...I don't really get it. LOL.
Yeah there's a lot of stuff in this game I had some gripes with but the infinite credits made up for it. HAHA.
I also hated the fact that they made Lance Bean a side note and "Sully"-ed his name (pun intended <-you gotta be hardcore to get that last one) by making him cross dress. LOL
Great review. I'd give about a 9/10 myself, Contra III is still my favorite but this is a great entry in the series. As somebody who started playing games in the middle of the NES era I appreciate games that make me want to throw the controller in frustration. This game does that. I fully expect younger players to hate on it just like they did Mega Man 9, but personally I love these throwback games and hope we see more. Castlevania Rebirth possibly?
Ive beaten Rebirth on Normal and Hard. The Co Op was on easy mode, because Kwife had never played Contra before. She still won't play it on any other difficulty. I beat Nightmare while this was uploading around Midnight. I had to continue a lot but I still beat the hardest setting.
We have a little Contra meme going around my group of friends and like to pick on the ones that plays on easy. And Contra is Hard. That can be an excuse for everything, try it you may come to like it. :3

Definitely a great game, although the final boss still pisses me off, no matter how many times I fight him.
As for the part where Lance is wearing drag, Nintendo does seem to be acting a little lest strict about some things like things like that. I mean, they did allow Sexy Poker on WiiWare here in the states (although I hear it got banned in Australia).

YES! Contra is a lot like the old ninja gaiden games. The contra games are not nearly as hard (as long as you don't rush!), but they are still very good, and well worth your time and money.
