I am ecstatic to have been sent this piece by an old school friend as I had never heard it. Profoundly uplifting. Nice to have occasional surprises like this. Thanks for putting it up.
Actually, I think the ponderance of the drums adds to the performance. It gives it a definite no-nonsense air as if the dancers were really serious about what they were doing (if anyone actually danced to this music) . In all, a great performance.
It certainly is one of the best performances. The drums are a bit too boomy for me toward the end.
I also feel - having known this entiire suite for the longest time - thanks to the ancient recordings by Franz Litschauer - that the temp should be maintained at a rock steady pace until just before the end, when at 4:55 or so on this performance it should really start to broaden out, emphasizing the inherently triumphant quality of the ending which is clearly in the music.
I agree, Respighi does not get the recognition he deserves.
Without going into too much tedious detail, your graphic for me is fitting. This piece, many years ago, marked a new beginning for me, in a new State with a new love. An early morning music program on NPR would play this as an opening theme every Wednesday morning, and I would wake up hearing it. It will always remind me of a new dawn, and hope.
Respighi has never gotton the credit he deserves. His melodies and orchestrations are superb and all of his music that I have heard really captures the feelings and emotions it was apparently intended to. They don't make 'em like him anymore, at least the y don't promote and encourage them. Modern composers seem to have a dislike of melody and harmony. I wonder why?
@mspitz2004 You are so right me too , , the first time I heard this pieces was on harvie krumpet and from that moment on I fell in love , verdi dies irae is amazing too y love that short my family think is sad , but I believe is hopefull

simply uplifting. possibly one of the first l, lV, and V chord progressions so copied in mid to late 20th century recordings. think of Louie Louie. As a matter of fact, search Louie Louie on you tube.

Often get same feelings about walzes of Strauss jr., especially "Geschichten aus dem Wiener Wald", but generally the whole genre of old classical music is 'divine'...
I would love to know more about this awesome performance of the Bergamasca.... who's conducting and which ochestra, recording etc. Thanks for posting this!

Love this piece. However IMHO the Antal Dorati/Mercury Version is not so stressed and has more swing, it's my preferred version.
