the best thing about this show is that the characters arent described with a race. basically whoever is best for the part and can embody that character best, gets the part. i find that great in a theater world where is "type" is so important.
I don't think the Marcy Park has to be asain but that lady has to much soul for that part.. Marcy is suppose to be the type of girl that shows no emotion except determination know?
actually the original broadway Marcy is Asian.. and yes, call me a racist but i think that Marcy Park should be an asian. Are you saying Othello should be played by a white man if he was a tiny bit better than the Black auditioner? plus i'm white so this isn't a bias thing.
makes me scared. i'm a white girl playing the part in a few months. i hope im good at the part even though i'm not asian.... uhm actually i don't because that has nothing to do with theatre at all. certain shows are based on race and discrimination and spelling bees usually aren't. just because i'm not asian doesn't mean i can't play an smart girls role. but thanks.
You may consider all of those things bad casting or a mistake on the directors part, but I couldnt have asked for a better cast or a better show. I hope to post some videos as soon as we open.
Racial casting is silly. As is physical casting when talent calls. We're doin this show right now at my community theatre. Im playing Chip, and Im slightly overweight and NOT asian. Our Barfee is tall and lanky our Marcy is Indian, our logainne is the oldest person in the cast (although the character is supposed to be older)
You know, they may not have HAD any Asian people available to fit the role of Marcy. Acting is more important than ethnicity, and rarely does a community have the same diverse resources that Broadway has.
This looks so atrocious.... i LOVE spelling bee, but this version has taken TOO many liberties.... Marcy isn't Asian, the numbers aren't right, the costumes are ALL wrong.... I'm so confused...
@MRuby825 You do know that with theatre the idea is to be creative right? Notes in italics concerning costuming, staging and such are just from the first stage manager's notes, the directions of the first show. If it is the same thing over and over again it becomes dull and people loose interest.
@MusicMuse626 well it doesnt really matter what race some charecters are, this one does beacuse asians are stero typed as uber smart and it makes it funny..... but for example ,y school just did the producers and we had the first black leo bloom...
@MusicMuse626 So your saying you would rather have a sucky Asian actress play Marcy instead of a talented white actress just because Asians are stereotypical over achievers?
Where's Olive and Barfee??

Our production of this at NSU is going up in two weeks and I am playing Mitch and I'm white. Does that mean it was a poor casting decision?

why should the race matter of any character if the actor is good?

@simsrule347 ...thats different. In Othello, one of the major themes is discrimination. There is no mention of race at all in Putnam.

Marcy does not HAVE to be asian. As far as I know, it doesn't specialize it in the script. It would be different if it were specified.

I think that it's absolute b-s that Marcy is NOT Asian.
There are only so many Asian roles out there in musical theatre.
