Nah it's one of the main riffs to the song, the one that kicks in when the drums and guitar join.

The bombtrack intro is 10*easier, and is played around the 2nd and 3rd frets. =)

There's no reason to be condescending. I'm sorry if it offends you if i don't have it note for note, but if you'll excuse me i'll have you know i know every scale and mode on a bass or guitar and i've taken two college level theory courses and years of guitar lessons. The solo is not scalular, it is highly chromatic and anyone who knows anything about the mars volta knows that Omar Rodriguez composes 90% of the material and is totally ingorant of music theory, hence why most are atonal.

I'm not interested in emulating anyones' style note for note, nor do I believe anyone would feel flattered that someone can copy down exactly what they're doing on a recording. believe it or not, its just a crappy mexican standard. Since this video was filmed I fitted it with vintage 60's, adjusted the neck, and resautered the electronics with some better wire and now it sounds and plays better than any fender i've ever heard. I love it!

now that you can physically play it, you have to make sure its dead on with the beat, like 6-8 you rush it. when i first learn cliff burtons anesthesia, i did the same thing..dont play it as fast as you can, play it right.

Flea played the parts that were written by the original bass player on the first Mars Volta cd after she left to join P!NK's live band. John Frusciante and Flea are both good friends of Cedric and Omar of the Mars Volta, and John's contributed guitar parts to every mars volta album. They hired Juan Alderete of Racer X shortly after the album was released and he's been with them ever since.

Try using your thumb instead of finger. Victor Wooten is know for this teq. Keep your thumb stiff and act like the tip is a pick. Make sure to try and keep your hand straight and stiff as well. (99% sure this is how he does it so fast and accurate.

P.S- It does a number to your thumb, so be prepared.

yeah i've been doin the 'ol wooten trick for a while, but i generally stick to the style of whatever bassist i'm imitating to get the same kind of sound. When i play wooten stuff (which is generally well under tempo), i do the double thumb technique, and when i play rush stuff i do kind of the same thing, but with my index finger instead of thumb, like geddy lee does.
