He's ken's FRIEND, not a sidekick, he's a very important character in the anime and in turn the movie, sure his story on the side may not seem important, but the fact is he is very helpful when kenshiro can't multitask murder everybody from miles away. Plus he is essential near the end when kenshiro uses his ultimate secret technique "Musou Tensei" no spoilars.

This is one of my favorite anime movies ever, right next to the masterpiece "Akira".

When the heads and bodies explode, colorfuly censored kind of but amazing.

Despite some flaws it was a really good movie.

(In my opinion, the final fight ended in a draw, Roh just wouldn't take it)

This is a a movie thats a recap of the TV series of seasons 1 to 2. The reason why the heads were exploding is because they didn't elaborate the fact of the assassin martial art called "Hokuto Shinken" and the ending of the 1986 movie was changed in later where they end up in a draw. No offense but this is not a really good experience if you are trying to introduce this to fans getting into the north star series.

Kenshiro uses a 1000-2000 martial art called Hokuto Shinken, which takes advantage of pressure points in the body; hence the exploding. Rei uses the sister art Nanto Seiken, which basically uses his fingers and feet etc. as blades and cut the opponents body. Ken's bout with Shin is just the first 7-12 chapters and Ken spends the rest of the time going around killing villains and saving villages. The other part of the anime is Ken killing his brothers.

The anime series actually censors the exploding heads a lot more, but don't let that put anyone off. It's not quite as AWESOME as the movie, but it's got some good stuff in it, and an actual good plot. Also, it's mostly just plain ridiculous. The first arc in particular is just a load of filler that wasn't in the manga filled with repeated bad animation and weird baddies. Kenshiro fights zombies, the Klu Klux Klan, a giant monster, a gay disco fan, several armies of mohawk punks, and A TANK!

Like, if you've read the books, then you know that Rei doesn't actually get killed then and there, but he dies some days later because Raoh had hit a point on him to make him die after three days. In any case, the movie as it is in itself is good without knowing the extra stuff, and the books are good as they are. The movie slightly changed some stuff from the books, but it doesn't matter since it didn't cover the whole story anyway. I saw the movie first and then read the books-you should too!

The key of Nanto Seiken was using the ki in order to attack from without, whereas with Hokuto Shinken, it was that you attacked from within. There was also a third, obscure style in the series in which one actually used their ki as a fiery type energy to literally obliterate people. Julia was actually a successor of Nanto in the books, and knowing all the stuff how it is supposed to be makes the movie worse for how it is, because they leave out important stuff.

Nanto Sei Ken (southern ladle/south star holy style/fist) it what Shin and Rei used. Shin used Nanto Gokuto Ken I think, whereas Rei used Nanto Suicho Ken. (south star swan fist, which is why he was graceful and "effeminite") Nanto Sei Ken was supposed to have like 100 someodd branches with open learning and practice, whereas Hokuto Shinken was passed down from generation to generation, with only one heir. Jagi was pissed because he wasn't chosen cause he was neither as kind nor as smart as ken

Kenshiro, Raoh, and Jagi used Hokuto Shinken (new hokuto, or ursa major [north star] style [first]), which was an "unbeatable" improvement on hokuto no ken, which was the original art it was based on in the books. The idea was that they took their ki or body energy and put it into acupuncture points which caused all kinds of effects. It's not that Kenshiro was strong as much as he was skilled, in that he kept zapping points on the enemies in a quick-thinking, tactful manner

I saw the film when I was 19 and exploring anime culture. THIS MOVIE IS SO RIDICULOUS IT MAKES 'HOSTEL' AND 'SAW' MOVIES LOOK LIKE KID'S PLAY. Notable ridiculous scenes I remember is the Finger penetrations of the main protaganist's chest, the Giant man that slices soldiers in half (in masses) through his way, and telekinetic brain blowing accompanied by dumb repeating howls. may Anime never know embarrassing dark times again.

The FotNS movie wasn't exactly a great movie, but it's certainly alright.

About Rei... I am more bothered they left Toki and Mamiya. The whole movie pretty much summraized 25x50 episodes of TV series footage. Yeah dude, check out the series, it makes a whole lot more sense.

Oh, and the real japanese ending had Kenshiro still standing at the end before Lynn showed up... and in the TV version, Toki, the fourth brother, stopped the fight.
