I can't believe people have given this video thumbs down. Do they not know who this man is? He was the teacher of many great teachers...Higa Minoru sensei, Arakaki Isamu Sensei...He was the uchi desu of Choshin Chibana sensei, the founder of Shorin-ryu! Funakoshi Gichin sensei trained in Shorin-ryu and it was he who was responsible for the spread karate to the western world. People shouldn't disrespect Higa or his style. He influenced many of the modern styles westerners train in.
I know I'm a sensitive soul but I have tears in my eyes knowing that people have had the nerve to "thumbs down" this man. He was a very important man to my chief instructor Arakaki Isamu Sensei and Arakaki Sensei is very important to me. Therefore Higa Yuckoku Sensei is very important to me, too. He was a great man and had he not taught my sensei, Shorin-ryu would not have been passed to me and my senseis. I have much to thank this man for because Shorin-ryu is a big part of my life.
im not really getting these thumb down for this video.. its very disrespectful and id like to see you in his age performing kata like this...
Anyway seeing kata performed in that way makes me think about it differently and could be very helpful in understanding it.. but lets practice and leave talking.

@philotaaveti look at his movements, he did it slowly and smoothly, so he didn't need to practice Aikido or Tai Chi. He adapted the techniques to his physique. This is the art of karate, you can do it until you die!
@philotaaveti Ok, but why should he? In aikido he has to throw himself on the ground, in karate he can stand all the time. Maybe you will say "in that age he shouldn't throw himself on the ground but just throw others", but then I would say "In Karate it's the same, he shouldn't strike like a 20 year old guy". But nonetheIess, I understand what you mean.
@hellothereitsjustme i thot the ryu were all the same...........also this does look to be a hard style compared to most styles...........if you were to look at all styles of marshall arts from hard to soft
Shidokan is a school of Shorin ryu or (kobayashi) started by Katsuya Miyahira, sensei. Yuchoku Higa, sensei and Miyahira, sensei both studied under Chosin Chibana, sensei (they both had other instructors, as well). Yuchoku Higa, sensei started his dojo-Kyudokan, and Katsuya Miyahira, sensei started his dojo -Shidokan. Different schools of shorin ryu respectfully. Thank you.
im in matsubayashi shorin ryu and ive only heard of that and kobayashi shorin ryu. ive never heard of shorinryu shidokan, could somebody give me a back round history lesson on it or maybe some really great kata's to look at i would be very appreciative. thanks so much to all :).
This is amazing and more inspiring and worth watching than the 1000s of competition katas by 20s-30s age something, imagine if we too can keep on practicing like this all way through life :)
Those who put thumbs down on this video are truly very disrespectful, malicious and ignorant. Higa Yuchoku Sensei is a true MASTER and a glory of Okinawan Karate Do. I do not belong to his school but to Shorinryu Shidokan in Argentina.
this is great. i can't believe someone came on here and gave all the good comments thumbs down, as well as rating the video only two stars. There are truly ignorant, malicious and heavily disrespectful people on Youtube. It's saddening.
Ofcourse brother, Higa Sensei s brother, Jintatsu Higa Sensei was a Matsubayashi Karateka under Nagamine Sensei before he came into Kyudokan of Higa Yuchoku Sensei :) Regards
It's very impressive to see that Nagamine Sensei raising from chair with a bow to Higa Sensei while he's walking down finishing kata. I was searching for this clip for long time. Thank you very much again for posting
Thank you very much for posting this. This is the first ever time I saw a video of Higa Yuchoku Sensei in action. What a sporot he had, even at old age. Deep bow to Higa Sensei

"The young masters are respected. The old masters are venerated." I remember the quote but not the source

What we are seeing here is someone who is physically feeble but spiritually/mentally undefeated. In other words: he's giving us a TRUE karate lesson.

my thought is that elders should not practice hard styles like karate but soft forms like akido or chinese forms

@philotaaveti traditional Shorin-ryu is not/should not be "hard". Goju-ryu is quite hard but Shorin-ryu is not...relaxation is really important.

it is amazing to see a man of that age to perform a karate form , even more he has got a wounded foot. Okinawans are real warriors.

What most do not realize is these old masters are the ones that taught their sensei or their sensei's sensei.
