is there a video on how you made that arrow quiver attached to your assault pack? i have a similar assault pack and would like to know if you have time. great video keep it up
Add some "barbwire" style twisted up sharpened metal to the kill wire with a few nails, nailed up from the bottom of trap for killing rabbits and larger squirrels, they won't pull off the trap.,
great video. +1 on the cordage hole. learned that one the hardway. victor sells a "pro" rat trap thats made of plastic and its impossiable for the rodent not to activate the trigger when it goes for the bait.
The problem with regular rat traps is theyre made out of some kind of soft wood and after a few activations they tend to split the wood theyre made of. I take a chunk of oak and carefully remove the mechanism and stake it into the oak piece that Ive planed down to size.
any possibility of welding a nail at the end there, drilling a hole for it to sit in when you have it packed, and when it shuts. it would increase your chances of killing and trapping bigger game correct?
I actually have a rat trap in my pack but was always worried about the animal not being killed instantly and running away with the trap. Drill a hole in the trap and tie it off is genius, never even thought of it (duh). Dave you are a wealth of info. Thanx!!!
@EMMONS100 I also came up with the idea to in addition to setting this as a trap is to tie a string to the trapping end, and that string to a stick. then using that one stick, setup a secondary trap with a rock setup like a deadfall. Trap is set, it pulls the stick, and then drops on the animal. Set the stick on a smooth rock to make it even smoother of a pull down.
i screw mine head high on the tree. be sure to drill smaller pilot hole first. small dot of pnut butter w/ a single pnut a few inches above the trap and just the scent of pbutter on the spring.
Right on! I love using rat traps for small game. Squirrels, Mink, Weasel. I have also found that if you buy the "JAWS" mouse/rat traps they work for small game birds like dove and I got alot where I live.
Really ? everyone watching this is surprised you can use rat traps for trapping small animals ? REALLY ? Then they gonna talk about surviving, you got no chance peoples lol
@leloodallasmultipass Just pointing out peoples delusions when they start talking about "surviving" I got another tip for them too, water bottles can be used to carry liquids, like oil or tuna juice or even grape soda.
@pac6010 srsly, I mean, only survivalists who have already been out in the field are commenting on these videos... no random people who might find this info refreshing.
@leloodallasmultipass haha , you really don't see the stupidity of people having to be surprised that rat traps can be used to trap small animals do you ?
@pac6010 oh, i'm totally with you. because a city based accountant who happens upon this video should be considered stupid for commenting on his first survivalist video. Especially if he's never even held a rat trap. I am impressed with how well you know everyone who has watched this video.

How would one go about preparing a squirrel for breakfast? Hmmm, that's a ponderment? Very carefully, I would wager. Given their propensity to carry the plague. Normally, I prefer my meat medium rare, but in this case, make mine very well done. Crispy and charred.

Somabeech!!! I've hunted, hiked, and lived in rural areas (use rat & mice traps) all my life- and never considered using one as a "survival" trap!! Great site, great ideas! 5-star!
Have you noticed a decrease in the wildlife or trees turning yellow. They look good behind you? I'm just wondering about the weather modifications and the Congress voting to allow engineering to dump over 80 million metric tons of aluminum barium and other harmful chemicals in our atmosphere? Do you know about these 700 experiments and if so what do you think about them? Thanks again sir.

Thanks for the great video Dave! A common man's rat trap is so simple that many of us would never consider it. Cheap, light, effective, and doesn't waste calories. I think many people over-complicate survival with flashy techniques that in the end just waste time, calories, and money. Thanks again!
I love this guy. I've been viewing alot of video on snares and this, by far, is the most straight forward one. Why set up snares when you can get mouse/rat traps?
But seriously folks, you could put two cans of spam and 3 cans
of potted meat product in that same pouch and it still wouldn't be as nasty as eating a rodent. I've eaten lots of squirrels and my fair share of other exotic small game. It's why I never hit the wilderness without a lot of lightweight munchies. Chocolate. Tobacco. Maybe even a flask of brandy - for medicinal purposes. And oh yeah - a GUN. At least one.
@smuckwap The problem with carrying potted meat instead of the traps is that eventually (and quite soon) you will have consumed those and have nothing left but a couple empty cans, where-as the traps allow you to repeatedly catch game over a time frame much longer than those canned food stuffs would ever last. The traps are a much better long-term survival solution.
Theres nothin, and I mean NOTHING like put a backpack on and go to the wood for 3 days.Nothing come near to that. Not even a night with 3 hookers and 100g of purest bolivian coke.
very good idea.... what about painting them cammo or olive drab... wonder if the paint chemicals would hinder the trap?.... excellent vid.... AIRBORNE!
so crazy that you use actual rat traps. Me and my dad work in pest control. Just one thing i would suggest. Trade those cheaply made super market traps for some pro grade Victor traps, preferably with the yellow plastic trigger. not only does it has 2 sensitivity settings but its less likely to get stuck do to cold or rust.
@hardhatg69 also, best bait that i know of is peanut butter. Mice/rats love it and squirrels and chipmunks will eat it too. Mixing a little chocolate in it usually helps too<<<then again you could probably use a reeses, lol
Great Video Dave, and to improve the killing power of these traps you can lever up the end of the spring (the end by the picture of the rat) and glue in place a small block. This hugely increases the traps power. Another tip is to glue in a 'chin bar' just inside of where the arm slams down, so when the arm slams down, the animals chin is forced up when the bar hits it, helping to snap the neck. Cant takethe credit for this, search online for modified pro victor rat trap for better description.
I'm not Lying. As Soon As I seen this vid. I went Across the Street to the Dollar Store and bought 2 rat Trap's. Genius Idea. This Common Man thanks you Dave
learn to make a modern day box trap. it is more efficient and can catch a multiplicity of different sized animals per size of box. this includes bear.
these are great traps i use them all the time and they almost always work. just please remember where you put them because I set 3 of them up before nightfall and in the morning i found 2 of them. One of the traps had a squirrel in it. The third one found me because in the night leaves covered it and I stepped on it barefoot. I just glad it got my toe nail and didnt break my toe lol. USE THESE TRAPS for food, pests control and survival. great video dave keep posting

so crazy that you use actual rat traps.

Cant takethe credit for this, search online for modified pro victor rat trap for better description.

dude, you need to sell that backpack with all of the stuff. I can assure you I'd buy one because YOU made it. Great idea with those rat traps.

learn to make a modern day box trap. it is more efficient and can catch a multiplicity of different sized animals per size of box. this includes bear.

these are great traps i use them all the time and they almost always work. just please remember where you put them because I set 3 of them up before nightfall and in the morning i found 2 of them. One of the traps had a squirrel in it. The third one found me because in the night leaves covered it and I stepped on it barefoot. I just glad it got my toe nail and didnt break my toe lol. USE THESE TRAPS for food, pests control and survival. great video dave keep posting
