1988 Making Of A Legend is-definitive; Bob Hope 'benefit for David Selnick on Oscar-Night' is of-the-time; appropriate-with Artist ready-to sweep-the-boards 2012.
If Vivien Leigh had not existed or could not have played Scarlett O'Hara for some reason, I think the second-best choice for the role would have been Rita Hayworth. I don't think she would have been a better Scarlett that Vivien (even because this is just not possible!) but she would have played a nice Scarlett. Check out her performance in "The Loves Of Carmen" and you will know what I mean.
I had some problems with the LD version I picked up, MGM/Turner's 1989 LaserDisc CAV edition, they claim a digital picture transfer but there's no touch up and it seems like VHS quality for a film restored, I'm sure it gives LD a bit of a bad name, blame Ted Turner I guess! haha Wish there were subtitles at least.
It hurts me to learn the fact that both leading male actors did not want their roles at first place, although I understand it was the way men think in that period of time:a respectable male actor should only accept roles in the "tough guy" genre. But come on, Gone with the Wind is not a girly book or a sissy movie, if only women read the book and watch the movie, it won't be so successful !
@cltyj Oh get over it...iss ancient history...and who cares what they did or didn't want, the end result (ie: the FILM) is testament to the different levels of commitment from all involved!!!
No other actor in the world could have done Rhett Butler, they thought of Errol Flynn, and he would have looked the part, but could never have pulled it off. Leslie Howard was not, IMO, the best choice for Ashley although I loved him on other films; he was far too old and just removed, never seemed involved in the movie at all.
It's is true, if you are going to make a civil war film even today it has to be EPIC. Can anyone think of a film based in civil war times which is well remembered to this day?. Of course except Gone With The Wind and Gettysburg. Now think of WWII films, their are many you can think of.
I can't thank the up-loader enough. Lucky you kept the VHS tape in the dark LOL! the same thing happens to painting left in a dark Attic, the quality of the colours are preserved. =D
How did you manage to post this 20 years after it was made with such good quality. Is it part of a set for sale in the market? Are there more documentaries like this one? Thanks for posting it.
You're welcome. I recorded it on a VHS tape the night it aired, and then the tape went into a drawer where it sat for all these years. I guess the image did not degrade because the tape was only played once or twice over the years.
@OceanKingNY I did the same, I recorded it that night on VHS, but I lived in Center City Philadelphia at the time and they only had cable in some parts of the city. Mine was not one of them, so it was not taped from cable. I still kept it and watched it over the years many times. Then it was lost in one of my moves. I am so glad to see it here again after all this time! It does sadden me that so many in the show are now dead, Marcella Radwin, Butterfly McQueen, Lyle Wheeler, Evelyn Keyes.

@AutumnSplendors Yes. It's also amazing (and a bit spooky) how much power and control the movie studios had over their actors back then.
