The sheep had real sheep fleeces & smelt the same. We actually rubbed sheep poo on their bums & other stuff like that so that the other farm animals would act naturally around them & ignore the motor noise.
The dogs were SUPER smart so they just enjoyed it all & acted however the trainers wanted them too.
We had real sheep standing right next to the robots, The real sheep felt secure in numbers with the robots & so all the critters just seemed to act naturally & were comfortable.

I'm so sad many studios are abandoning animatronics and models to 3D images and effects, I take jurassic park as the perfect example, you have both CGI and animatronics and even so many years later the animatronics give you an impression of life and so much feelings. It's the same for the models in the first star wars that still seems more realistic than the new ones and nowadays keep me dreaming about flying an X-Wing.
@MrFox1231 uhm there is no harm in using real fur, that's what sheep are used as a renewable resource you shear the sheep, it grows back, rinse and repeat and you don't kill for wool :P so of course they did use real sheep's wool
@therealpatros i think one of the main diference here is that japan focus on more automatic robots with a functional ai. while this is mainly a work of art. still incedibly good work put into these robots including the fact that this it was before 2000.
There was a mix of real sheep and robot sheep standing side by side in most shots. Anything that talked or acted was a robot. We made about 11 robot sheep so if the flock needed to look bigger we mixed real sheep in amongst them.
Amazing work all around! I would love to get into this industry- I already do high detail animal masks, it wouldn't take much to adapt this ability to go into animatronics. Thanks for posting this up, what incredible teamwork and an amazing end result!
Hi Sorry about that. But I wanted to remind viewers that with effective film making an audience can experience strong emotions. Rather than just being technically interesting puppets, with the right combination of elements you can actually empathise and feel strongly about them.
I thought in the movie they were just real talking sheep!!! HUH????

I always thought they were computer animated! :O
I wanna get into making robots now.

How did the border collie respond to all of this? He must have been confused! Or was he also a robot?

Holy crap! That's amazing. I always thought those sheep were real, but had animated mouths or something.
What talented people to have come up with something this awesome! I wish I was smart enough to do stuff like this.

ah yes one of the most beautiful films ( babe 1) my daughter loves it and so do I, too bad Mr Noonan does so few projects, he has a beautiful touch.
lots of heads I have not seen in a long time, great insight into what is a certified classic.
timeless and placeless film, why don't we make more films like this in Oz, whats going on?
