Nice one! I will rip this off too! might try cutting a slot and then using a heat gun to bend the top in and the bottom out, the hole looks like soil will fall out easy.
Love the fountain pump/rain collector. Do you leave it running all the time or on a timer or what? Cool dude, I bought the strawberry one this year so we'll see how that goes. I figured I would try the real thing first then do my own bucket version.
absolutely brilliant! You are an inventor at heart - I am very impressed. Have you considered taking a Permaculture Design Course? You'd love it. I am taking one right now and man, they teach you this stuff and waaay more.
I planted 1 tomatoe plant in the topsy turvy and another in a regular planter set on the patio in my experience the 1 in the regular planter grew twice the size than the 1 in the topsy turvy.
instead of cutting a hole, you can cut a 4 inch horizontal slit. Push the top half in, pull the bottom half out and it automatically keeps the dirt in place. nothing should fall out when you water your plants.

LOVE THE RAIN WATER,because you can grow it enywhere if you colect the rain--do not water to much because you wash out nutrions,,cover the basket when it rains wash out nutrions too..put coffe filter around the plants,,,,love the basket they are strong,,,LOVE THE SET UP
The biggest problem to this method that the roots are in the same temperature as the rest of plant. For this reason you will not get berries as much as from normal ones.
You need to cover the pails with that white and black fused plastic,,, white side out..... The white pails let light through and it will inhibit root growth
Wondering how it worked out any pics of the vegies and fruits as they grew? One big problem I see with this "redneck" set up is drainage. You would think that in the bucket you would have to allow for drainage. If someone else has already brought that idea up then ignore this. Thanks though for the great suggestion.
That looks like a lot of thought went into your design. How did you get the rainwater into the trash can? It seems like 5 gallon buckets would be extremely heavy. What did you use to bolt it into the side of the house? Cool idea.
It get's the plants off the ground, so away from bugs, slugs, critters and I think most importantly better air circulation so that mean less mold and other moisture related problems. I know there's more but like in my last post I'm really stoned so I hope all this makes seance.
One tomatoes keep it to one plant per bucket to it can develop a proper root system, place the hole on the bottom, overtime you can coil the tomato back up the bucket if you put some screws along the bucket and train the plant back up. You could do strawberries the same way in the buckets with all the holes.
It looks like a pretty good idea, I just can't figure out why you wood want to do that. Unless you don't want them to freeze on the ground in the winter time.
the topsy turvy has some small holes at the bottom of the thing so the excess water can drip out, perhaps yours needs the holes, but I do believe that your plants will grow
hey J.P. like the ghetto farm, i believe it will work, enough sun and water anything will grow...i wounder could a guy grow something else that way?huh. awesome idea.
This is sweet. The topsy turvey is the rip off. They cost much more than buckets and don't last. This is my first year of growing veggies and I'm doing upside down as well. Check it out. I'm learning as I go.
The thing I'm most interested to see is how well the tomato plants will grow because you have multiple plants in each bucket. I'm learning the hard way that I planted too many zucchini in 1 pot because they need their space. Keep posting updates. I will be watching.
looks pretty good to me might even try something lose to that myself. Your idea is better than the name brand stuff.

You might need to heat the plastic though.

check the ph of your rain water! sometimes it can be as low as 5.0 you need 6.2-6.8 ideally.
also don't use clear tubing, the light gives you fungi. same thing with the white buckets. i would use black buckets painted white.
good idea!

what if you use a clear bucket... more sunlight... if they make clear buckets
