This is from the 1957 EMI recording with Serafin, and she scales back her passions, operating with an already reduced voice. Her two stupendous incarnations of the role are both from 1953, first in Florence (assumption of the role) with Vittorio Gui pushing the orchestra to Promethean sounds, then Scala under Bernstein. Some moments from Dallas 1958 (her last really fearless vocal performance) under Rescigno are also electrifying. Yes, she paid the price with her voice but touched immortality.
Today was the first time I ever heard this opera and this was the first recording. It's one of the most amazing things I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Thanks for this!
Poor Maria. What she did to that voice. The tessitura of this opera is frightening. It begins on B2 and ends on C sharp. Haha. She did so many things that she shouldn't have, from an academic standpoint, but left a kind of curse on the opera world which says "You want to try this? Go ahead!" All the while she knew, "After me, no one!" And to this day, she is on top of all of them, past, present and future. Ponselle never would have dared to do this, nor been able to either.
Poor Maria. What she did to that beautiful voice. Nowadays the world adores here, but it wasn't always so. She stretched it, pushed it, sang aperta and not chiusa, scura instead of mista, but left no question that she was then, is now and I imagine will forever be the most brutally truthful singer who ever lived, not to mention the most fascinating and musically gifted. Her career was not so much a gift to the world of music, but a curse, la maledizione. Personally, I love being under her spell.
@sillyboydeux I really like how you express yourself about la Callas i love her too and yes she did crazy and out of this world things with her voice but oh boy do i love it.
Braba, braba, braba!!!!
Thanks so much for posting. I had this version on LP's many years ago and I wore the records out playing them so much. Super slideshow - Callas so beautiful and Vickers has got the legs for Giasone!!
Thank you for sharing this... I saw the Dallas production as a teen-ager... it was a life changhing experience.... one one of my the most memorable moments.
Beutiful pictures were can i get those pictures it would be nice... well thank you for a wonderful picture show and the singing like always is great... viva la callas
