  • I'm so glad I came across this video! Although I totally agree w/ what u are saying, I've realized I haven't acted accordingly. I've been transitioning during my 2nd year of business school & planned to BC after I got a job. I noticed that blk folk are the ones critical about our hair, no one else. My classmates always compliment my hair and I am the only black woman in my classes. It may be more of an issue to us bc it's new to us. If they cannot accept my hair then that is not the job for me.

  • This is great. Honestly, I have decided to wear my hair natural in an upcoming interview. I love my hair both ways. I think I look great both ways. BUT, I don't want to present a false image during the interview. I want them to see all that I am.

  • If your going to go natural you should find a hairstyle like sisterlocks, bantu knots, ect because a afro maybe taken as your not serious however these are my opinions.

  • Omg I am tempted to make a natural hair Video now because now that I am strongly thinking of cutting off of my permed hair tomorrow and I have filled out many job applications and I'm wondering if I should worry if I land an interview because of my hair.

  • I just went on a job interview today and had the same train of thought. I just pinned my hair back and wore a headband with my hair curly and I did not regret it at all. I wanted to look up videos on opinions before i went but I decided to just go for it! I find out if I got the job tomorrow, and I think the interview went really well.

  • THANK YOU.. soo much for this video.. i have a job interview today and everyones sayin "no puff" for the interview.. i just want to be ME... soo thank you sooo sooo much :)

  • Thank you for this video. It was just what I needed. Been natural since April 2010. It's been a great experience for me personally but a bit heartbreaking to see people's perception of me change because of my hair especially people I care for. Anyway, I just want my hair to be healthy in the end.

  • I didnt realize that being natural was a fashion statement. I recently BCed Aug 21 of 2010 and i love it!!!! How can being natural not be fashion...Why are we sending the message that beauty is only in being something that we are not. Being comfortable in your skin is the most beautiful thing in the world and if you are confident enough to do then then THtATS BEAUTY! Why are we so negative on ourself. If we can't accept natural hair ..why should anyone else.?

  • I love your user name! I love this vid as well so inspirational!

  • Great video! I agree with everything. I have an interview next week, and have no intention of straightening my hair.

  • @NadrianATRS I would have to disagree. Natural hair if very much in fashion. You see it more and more on the run way, magazine covers, trendy singers and actresses are wearing their natural. Thanks you for watching.

  • @NadrianATRS I am having trouble understanding how the natural hair that grows out of a black woman's head is no longer in fashion. It is our natural hair for crying out loud. The hair that God put in there grows out like that naturally. It is not a fashion statement.

  • @saradekali Im a guy and I dont wear my hair natural... I read GQ magazine and all the models have straight hair regardless of their sex

  • Thank you for this video. I have an interview next week and i've been natural 8 weeks now and so this is a new hurdle.

  • Oh, wanted to add, don't hide YOU. Your hair is YOU. They come as a package. You hide it now you'll be stressin wondering what they will say when you do show it. Get the elephant out of the room in the begining. Ok, I'm done now :)

  • I agree with you 100% That applies anywhere. how you make your first impression is how you are perceived. It has less to do with hair than people think.

  • I am happy for you! Girl, I am naturala and just started a new job too, but I'm out there with my natural haiur at work, but I couple it with slamming outfits. It's me! Thank you girl! I interviewed as they see me everyday.

  • I AM NOT MY HAIR! I basically told my mom exactly what you said. I've been natural for a year and my mom's been fully natural for a couple of months. But, I still feel her mindset isn't natural. If I straighten my hair, it'll be because I want to, not because I feel society wants me to. I've been seeing more and more sistas with natural hair...so while times are the same, they're changing all at once. Just like the average person has at least one tattoo, so job hiring is going to HAVE to change.

  • Your mentality will bring you far in life!

  • im natural and have been for 9 months. i've had 2 interviews in 1 week and i was hired for both jobs. i wore twists outs for both interviews and it worked out for me. my advice is to just be yourself.

  • I have an interview on Monday for an Administrative position. I will be wearing my twa. Thanks for this vid!

  • NO because most sistas or i should say black girls are weave headed, chemical head freaks

hair chemicals is legal crack on the head

  • OMG your video is right on point! It was like you're reading my mind!

  • I don't do natural hair because of the conservative work environment i work in. More power to you for not giving a damn. Wish I had your confidence

  • I understand. It took me forever to go natural for that reason (and others).

  • Thank you so much for the video. I have an interview this week and I was just stressing about my natural hair. I was debating about whether or not I should my hair or wear a wig. I think I am going to wear my natural hair.

  • I love your hair. I have naturally straight hair and I find it so boring....your hair has life, beauty and spark! I would give anything to have your hair...

  • LOVE the video! I completely agree with everything you said. And I LOVE your hair!

  • I don't get this. I've been natural since 1981 and no one gave a damn back then. What's the deal now?

  • u must was living under a rock lmao

  • I couldn't have said it any better!

  • I couldn't agree with you more! Much luv sista!

  • I have a job interview tuesday and I am natural. I am a little nervous because it is a professional conservative job that requires a college degree. But I think I will be ok. My sister in law just got a job as a registered surgury nurse. She wears her hair in a fro and two strand twists to work. Also I think that natural hair is excepted a little more now. I noticed a lot lately on tv the african american women are natural.

  • Good luck with you interview! And you are right, I'm seeing naturals all over the tv, in movies and in magazines. It's about time!

  • we love your hair!!!!

  • absolutely... the part about accepting ourselves needs to go esp. to the non-natural women who give naturals a hard time about "having professional hair"... non-whites pick up on that crap and then think its ok to think naturals are unprofessional...

I've gotten more blowback from non-natural women than any other group about my hair... because of their issues and hangups.

  • Wisdom!

  • I would hire you any day or night. Congrats. I can't say that I'm surprised. Miss ya!

  • You look so professional that I'm sure the guys

who have to 'pay in' don't even notice:)

  • Preach!!

  • Your outlook on this is awesome. I agree with you 110%

  • Excellent video!!!

What kind of work do you do? I'm guilty of the

'I'll change for the interview, but once I get it"

I'm transitioning and have no intentions of

flat-ironing for a very long time.

You make me proud to be a black female:)

  • I'm the tax lady. =)

  • Great vid. My hair has been some form of natural for the last 10 years. I had locs for 8 years, briefly permed my hair and am now natural. This is our natural hair, it is not like we are wearing our hair like this just to tick people off. Many people are ignorant to our natural hair because we spent so much time hiding it, altering it. I feel that part of my journey is to walk tall and educate ignorant people who may be as influenced by society as I once was about what beautiful hair is.

  • I so agree. We should educate people on our hair. If and when we do we can impact society.

  • yes yes, thank u for posting. i'm going to an mba conference next month and was worried about how i'd wear my hair. i've been lazy lately so, the style will be back in a head band or just out (got a medium size curly fro). i'm good, no more worries and i won't let anyone worry me about it either. :-)

  • Well good luck with the conference and don't be worried about your hair. Let it do what it does best and you do what you do best. That's all that counts! Luv you name by the way.

  • thanks shuganaps!

  • Preach lady!! Wonderful video! great info! Went thru something similar myself. Completely understood.

  • i have a real problem with people debating on whether natural hair is acceptable n professional because how can you determine whether what God made is acceptable. Nobody tells white people their natural hair is unacceptable just because it's straight...so why is my God given natural hair unacceptable! society!

  • Bless you for making this video! I have an interview in the morning, two next week, and I was going back and forth in my head about my hair. I was like oh lord hear we go again...lol. Hearing your words gave me the confidence boost I needed to get back out their and get this money. Thx again!

  • I am not even going to say "good luck" because I can see you've claimed it and once you do that the job is your.

  • I have been natural since 2003, but I always wore my hair in straw curls, or straightened until about 3 months ago. My job requires for me to deal with Circuit Court Judges, so I was affraid that they would not be very accepting of my naturally curly hair, but they seem to actually love my hair as much as I do. I do now understand that my work performance is what counts. No one cares what my hair looks like, as long as I bring something to the table. Congrats on the new position!

  • You hit it on the head; no one really cares about our hair being natural. We care but once the first impression is over it's back to work folks.

  • Congratulations! I work for a Fortune 500 company and am one of a handful with coco skin. THE ONLY one with natural hair. I've become the change I want to see in corporate America. Continue to bring the flavor.

  • I'll continue and I know you will. Hell I'm even recuiting!

  • Great video. Great ideas and its the truth. And it apply to anything anyways. Be real!!

    Thanks for sharing ;)

  • I struggle with this all the time. This is my first time being out of work since going natural. I am really skeptical when I go on interviews with my natural. There was one interview where I DEF knew that it was due to my hair. I'm from NYC and it is more accepted out there than out here in Philly in my opinion. I still rock my wigs on interviews. Hopefully soon I will just not give a ****! What is your new position?

  • I know it's a hard choice to make but do what you need to do to get you foot in the door. Good luck. I know you'll find the perfect job for you.

  • Thank you so much, I am in the process of looking for a job but nervous because I am newly natural (11 mos.) I refuse to wear a wig b/c I want employers to see that I am not defined by my hair, the job I am seeking is in a law firm "very conservative." Please show mw some styles I could wear.

  • I would either wear my hair back with a head band or pinned up in the back with the front curly. Check out the back ground photo of my channel.

  • This was a really cool vid....and ooooooh sooooo true. I recall the comments after I BC'd....they were all negative. But then once every got use to my hair, all those comments became positive. I went from being on 'crack' to being a 'strong woman' that knew what she wanted...lol... I am so grateful for my God given natural hair and I wouldn't have it any other way. Thx for the encouraging vid!!!!!

  • So you see WE can change people's views about natural hair by just being US!

    thank you for watching (tlsdone).

  • Great video, very real and good for us to keep in mind. When I cut my hair, I didnt expect people to accept my twa and I thought I would have really bad reactions but even though I thought that I still kept my head up and its amazing to see that people did accept it so it really does depend on how we present ourselves. Really cool video! Your awesome.

  • Ms. Priss, you're right. It is how we present ourselves. Love your channel by the way.

  • CONGRATS & GOOD LUCK on the new job. Great vid!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I live in California and I was so worried about this. After watching this I am definately wearing my natural hair to worl/school/interview. Just like India Arie says "I am not my hair".

  • Congrats on the new job! I remember when I told my aunt that I was going to start looking for another job, she told me to either perm my hair or wear a wig! She HATES natural hair. She thinks its ugly. One of these days, she's going to come around because my natural hair ain't going nowhere!

  • It's too bad your aunt feels that way about your hair. Maybe you can change her mind. I know a few people that have changed their opions (a little) about natural hair since I did the BC. Glad to know you're keeping your natural hair!

  • She knows that I love her and her opinion is just that. Her opinion. She knows I'm happy with the way my hair is and I'm saddened that she doesn't like it, but it's not going to change my mind about my hair. I love it and that's ALL that matters.

I love your hair by the way! :-)

  • Didnt know u were in NC. Me too!

  • aww look at your hair! its growing & looks good!

Love your message & you're soooo right. I wear hats to work bc I work in the sun so my co-workers have yet to see my natural hair & plus I'm still getting used to it.

    Thanks for the advice!

  • This is a very good point!

  • i'm happy to hear that you interview went well hopefuly the first day of school goes just as well i'm nervous i'm 15 and i just did the big chop my mother who is white HATES it and dosen't understand why i did it and i'm worried all the kids in my class will have the same opinion there a few blacks in my school but they wears weaves and me i'm mixed and my hair actually curls i think it looks gorgeous and love it but i'm still terrified almost to tears sometimes because

  • the kids at my school will let me know they think i look like a freak i live in oklahoma and their are many rasist southerners here still

  • I know kids can be so cruel and I also know it's hard to go against the norm, but on the real, those who tease and hate on you really wish they had what you have. If they make dumb remarks be cool and tell them you understand that they wished they had the independence you have. As for Mom...she'll get use to it and love you anyway. Luv your log-in name by the way.

  • Amen sister! I got a new job with my natural hair too. Good luck with your new job.

  • And good luck on your new job too.
