I still cry every time I watch this video. I wish I had more film of him talking to us. I've never felt so inspired and so proud as the night I stood in front of the camp with the other vets receiving our pins, and he saluted us. We love you Mr. Parks.
This is a great video. I just co-wrote a DM manual for my high school Band, and I relied heavily on George Parks' teaching and starred thoughts. I attended a DMA at Tyler in July, 2008, and his attitude has definitely helped shape my life. I am very thankful for his influence in my life. Do you have any other footage or clips? Thank you!
This still makes me cry, especially because the clips are from the DMA session I went to - umass amherst 2010. I was in that room when he spoke these words... -3
@ 1:15, I would have killed to been in the position that guy was in when Parks did the salute. I came in 2nd place in two of those marchoffs and to this day it still eats away at me.
@dciguy01 Lol that's my buddy Daniel. I managed to beat him once and win a march off, though I only won one at DMA. It certainly was a very special experience to win; however I know GNP wouldn't want it to eat away at you or anything. Just coming in second alone is a pretty serious achievement (I was second in a few of the march offs too!)
I went to the Indiana Music Educator's Association convention a couple of weeks ago where the keynote speaker invoked the name of George Parks. The room got silent and I teared up, as did the girl standing next to me. We hugged, being two complete strangers that knew nothing else about each other other than that we had a connection to George Parks, and that unspoken understanding that he changed both of our lives.
I never knew Mr. Parks, but I always heard UMMB from my dorm window and always appreciated hearing a world class band. After seeing this, I am truly honored to be a student at UMass. I hope this is not out of place for me to say, but Mr. Parks represented more than the band, he represented all of UMass, and I truly miss having an ambassador that shows the UMass spirit as well as Mr. George Parks. He will be remembered always.
I consider having George Parks as a guest conductor the luckiest and most influential event of my life thus far. In three days, he completely changed my attitude towards EVERYTHING that I did, and I could never adequately express how grateful I am for that. After that experience, I was able to attend DMA twice, and that had an even bigger impact. George was a superb motivator, a phenomenal teacher, and the absolute kindest person I have ever known.
Though I was only in his company for a total of two weeks, this man changed my life forever. Thank you for everything, George. Your family extended further than you ever knew.
That was so incredible moving! I hope all of the UMMB members see this, as truer words have never been spoken. May they embrace his words as they move forward.
Great Tribute. It's been 29 Years after I first met George as a freshman at UMASS. I am so sad he's gone, and joyful that I had the opportunity to meet him and experience and passion for music and marching band. He truely was the Power and Class.
George, It's because of you that I am the Drum Major I am today. You changed the way I look at band. You changed me. You are and will be forever my inspiration. All I do is now for you...forever
RIP George N. Parks you were the greatest. everyone that knew you is going to miss you. And thank you for putting that video together it made me feel much better.
I went to DMA my sr year of hs to be the Dm of my hs band. He has impacted my life so much i am now the DM of a D1 College. he has changed my life so much. thank you for putting this together. RIP GNP!
I was at the DMA this year at Greeley, Colorado... the 2nd to last to have been taught by Mr. Parks.
I had actually cried one night because of one of the stories he had told us, and now it grieves me even more that hes gone. He was a very great leader, and an even better teacher, one of the best ive ever had. I hope to lead my band with a pride and passion like he did. I will broaden my horizons for you Mr. Parks, for now you depart to a new one.
I was at this DMA, and looked forward to joining Georges band next year. I still do and i will remember George parks forever he changed my life. With Pride.
RIP George N. Parks. You were my inspiration my role model in everyway. you have taught me so much and really have made me a better person and not to mention a better Drum Major. You will be missed :( I know your Eyes will be With Pride
When I first heard, I was in disbelief. Then I was overly emotional, because I never got to learn from him at DMA, or be a part of the UMASS band, like I had dreamed. But now I know, after so many tears, that I didn't need to be in the band to be taught by him. He taught my Drum Majors, and they passed it down to me. And I'm honored to have been a part of UMASS Band Day. It doesn't matter how important we are to him, he will always be important to us.
