I have always loved your videos & found them very helpful! I have done things your way & gone as far as experimenting on my own a little to see if I can change the look of a project. I couldn't have even begun w/o your videos getting me started. I crochet for a hobby & for gifts for family & friends - everyone has always loved & cherished each piece. Anything handmade is from the heart & is accepted that way. Thank you for freely sharing you time & knowledge. Much appreciated! :)
sorry that you feel that way. I took crochet lessons from experts before I taught.
However, all I'm saying is that a sc is under two strands frontm or back loop is listed as such in patterns and it gives you a whole different design. Then people will wonder why their project doesn't look like the pic. It's not preference and it's not "my way" sorry you feel that you can't consider it but anyone here can look
@kmcla67 Crochet is like cooking, each person is going to add their own flavor.
It is the fault of the crochet authors for not providing enough details and specifying in their instructions what loops they should be crocheting under. A single crochet is a single crochet no matter what strand you go under.
This video is only a demonstration and not a pattern. When people are learning, they should experiment under the different strands to see what they like the best.

@kmcla67 In case you don't know, there are not set standards for crochet. Those crochet organizations are just a waste of money and a gimmick. You don't need to pay a crochet website to learn how to crochet. The UK even has different names for their crochet stitches. You have more learning to do.
sorry, I've taught for years it's not a preference it's a completely different stitch which says crochet in front loop or back you go under both strands for a single crochet any crochet book will all the way back to the 50s will show you that.
@kmcla67 Your problem is telling people they are wrong and teaching from crochet books. Obviously you don't know how to teach. Crochet is not your way or the highway. It is preference.
a true single crochet is under both loops, crochet in front or back loop only is just that and another whole stitch in patterns they ask for front loop or back only.
@cexiladi14 Practice working your stitches a little looser. If you are right handed, let the yarn run more freely with your left hand making looser stitches. The opposite hand you hold your hook with is your tension. You control how loose and how tight it will be.
I have a video the basic single crochet. You can crochet a chain to the width you want an afghan and then do single crochet. I will send you the basic stitch playlist. It has the stitches in slow motion.
my teacher told us to do a headband using crochet. She told us to start with chain stitches.I made chain stchs. the size of my head.then she said to use single crochet. how do i do that?
I have tried everything from looking on the internet to reading books and one day decided to pick it back up and look on youtube. I wanted to crochet a dog sweater for my baby girl. I found you on here and I Thank you for your knowledge. I would not have been able to crochet without your instruction. Thank you so much.
i have watched videos, looked through books, and looked on the internet and NOTHING!
i can get the chain and then once i start the next chain i get the first two or three stiches and then it starts to turn into a knot. do you have any advice?
Hello! okay, my question for you is I learned (from your videos) how to do a double crochet and I was wondering if one could make a scarf just by double crocheting until you get to the desired length. Thank you =)
I cannot do from 1:42 onwards!!!! I had been trying and trying and it doesn't look right! Yes, I just tried it yesterday for the first time. Forgive me... Please help...
when i was learning which was years ago..i did not know about the extra stitches for turning and could not figure why my edges werent right..i also wasnt keeping count of stitches..i was so young. this would have saved me lots of grief :)
I felt the same way when I first started. Just keep practicing and you will get it. It does take some time but you will start the understand the stitches and how they work. You just put your hook in the next chain over, pull a loop through. You will have two loops on your hook. Then wrap the yarn over your hook again and pull through both loops on your hook. Do the same thing through your next chain. Keep practicing and you will get it.
I am new to joining Youtube, but I have watched your demo on beanie hats a hundred times. I never seen this demo. Thank you so much because I now know what I have been doing wrong, as far as making squares. I've been crocheting nothing but hats this whole time. I'm now on to make my daughter a cute little scarf!
Thank you so much for the videos. I have joined a crochet circle (Yarn Angels of South Bay) that makes items for the Veterans at the Vet Hospital in Long Beach Ca. I struggled so hard to understand the picture and written instructions, and I didn't "get it" until I found your video. For all the years that I did poorly with learning, youtube has changed my world when I can watch and learn arts and crafts. Thank you so much for giving me the gift of knowing how to crochet. _Lisa
I'm doing granny squares & another lady will assemble into blankets. They accept crochet/knit hats/scarves, premie baby blankets, childrens blankets/Miller Childrens Cancer Ward. I can do a square discretely between classes or watching TV, it's totally perfect for me as a hobby. And then to know that someone will get a blanket & a few of those squares are from me, it's a good feeling. So thanks again for the video. Google Yarn Angels South Bay. A hospital near you might have another yarn group.
Thank you so much! I'm reteaching myself how to crochete. I was taught by my Grandmother as a child, but hadn't done it in years. So I bought a kit tonight, to teach myself. But I couldn't figure out how to do the single crochet, from the diagrams from the book. This helped me so much!! Thank you!

Hello, thank you for your advice, i have turned and continued and it looks great, thanks.
I have looked at your video for beani hat and the brim for it, it is so inspiring, i had to make one myself, and i have. your instructions are clear and i understood all.
I made it brown with a touch of contrast color around the edges and I also made the edging, reverse sc. It looks great.
Thankyou and look forwared to more of your masterpiece work.
Hi, thank you so much for your videos, they have taught me alot and better understanding of the stitches in crocheting.
I have a question.
I am making afgan, with simple square 13x13 inch, it involves each row making, sc 2dc, in each sc, at the end chain 1, but in pattern does not specify to turn, how do i go about continuing row, when there is no turning?
Some patterns are written differently and don't always tell you to turn. Since your pattern told you to chain 1, go ahead and turn and then follow row 2.
PS: The result I get reproduces the interlocking loops (or V's as someone called them), not only across the top as yours does, but also on the sides. I think it has kind of a cable knitted appearance, but I definitely crocheted it.
I don't know if I can describe this well enough to be understood but at 1:46 you pull your yarn through the first loop to make a new loop, and then pull the yarn through the new loop and your original loop to complete your crochet. All I do is skip your second step, and pull the yarn immediately through the two loops that are first present on the needle. Does this stitch have a different name, or is it just a variation?
thanks alot, ive always getting confused with the turning, since i dont add another chain on the end it ends up being a triangle lol, keep the good videos up!
thank you so much. my moms tried to teach me multipule times throughout the years how to crochet but she's left handed so it was a bit harder anytime i did anything it looked wrong cuz it was backwards to her. so thank you very very much for this i can finally make my own blanket without having to wait a year for her to make me one haha.
Thank you so much for your time and effort in the lessons you provide! I just wanted to say your videos are great! a real help. Been wanting to learn this craft for a long time. Simple color schemes & contrasting is the best. EX: a crochet instruction video with a multi-colored afghan behind the hands (the "background") - confusing. (Also the hands hid the hook & thread.) Visualization for this craft is extremely hard in reality, let alone on video.
WoW! Thanks for posting such great instructions. I'm wondering if after your row of chain stitches, would you normally reccomend doing what you did and just picking up one half of the "V"? Does that make a better foundation than going right into picking up both sides of the "V"? Or is this just your way of showing that there are several ways to do a single crochet, pick up one or both sides of the "V"?
When I say a "V" I'm talking about the stitches as they are shown at 1:23 in your video. The stitches actually resemble a series of letter "V"s stacked one inside another. In the first row of single crochet you pick up the top half of the stitch (by putting your crochet between the two legs of the "V"), and then for the next row of single crochet, you switch to picking up both halves of the stitch or "V".
At timecode 1:23 that is the chain stitch row and it is only necessary to go through one part of the chain row loop. You will not be gaining anything and you would make it harder on yourself to try to go through both loops of your chain. With the single crochet rows you can choose to go through both loops or one loop. It is up to you. It just creates different patterns. It may feel a little firmer by going through both.
thank you. your videos are of great help. i'm a beginner actually..okay, the instruction says make a circle like the one you've demonstrated on another video but with single crochets... but how do you do a SC2TOG???
Hey what kind of yarn do you use? Because I've seen a scraf that was heavy with basic yarn and I seen another one that was soft and light weight.

Yes you can. The single crochet will make a very nice afghan. The double crochet will be a larger stitch but it makes a nice afghan also.
