go to photonplay . com to buy microcontroller hex codes for all range of led matrix displays, scrolling signs, moving message sign display in all colour range bicolour, single colour
@odessa999 LED matrix displays are fun to work with. I have now moved onto using Swordfish Basic (for the pic microcontrollers) it is alot more fun and easy to use than Assembly language. But I am glad that I learned assembly because it really helps for when you want to learn just about any other programming language.
This is a good project, especially good bargain considering it's a much cheaper version of the Meggy RGB. I wouldn't let the resolution of the LED screen get you down, because the methods by which the games are created instil fundamental concepts of electronics. Also, the LED screen is far brighter than how it appears in this video.
@pedomohd i disagree. its not about the game. Its about gaining experience and understanding how things work with electronics. You might not think this is so stupid if you knew this has many of the same principals as Play Station and X box. You might end up inventing the next new gaming system from what you learned here to start with as a hobby.
@fitzgerald95971 in that case you are right but not all have the same level of experience. In my case, I made the comment based on my level of experiences and knowhow. So, I mentioned I better take a look at other projects I think worth taking notice, the designer of this projects have lots of projects I can choose anyway.
@pedomohd Maybe you could try making a higher resolution video game kit that is open source and open hardware and is not full blown mass produced that is $30, hmmm?
Oh, and to retrobrad, nice job!! I have ordered the components for a similar thing, except it is 8*16 and an arduino shield.
There are all sorts of tutorials and examples throughout the internet. I myself have a number of tutorials on my website - check out my channel to find the address.
Hi, The adventure game isn't yet finished unfortunately.
But so far the game uses about 1.5kbytes
The 16f648a can hold 6kbytes so it can be expanded on quite a bit!
I haven't yet added enemies or items to pick up - hopefully I will get around to that sometime soon!
The surface mount chips are 74373's. one controls the LED anodes, one controls the green LED cathodes, one controls the red LED cathodes and the fourth one controls the control buttons. (they are there to 'expand' the data bus.)
No, I didn't use double buffering at all. The RED cathodes, GREEN cathodes, ALL LED Anodes and Joystick each have their own 74373. To draw on the screen, you place 1 byte of data on PORTB then latch it to the red 74373, then place another byte on PORTB then latch to the GREEN 74373, then finally place data on PORTB then latch it to the LED ANODES. this will activate one column of LEDs, you keep repeating this process untill one frame is drawn. So it all happens one step at a time.
Can I order if I'm under 18 years old (legal age for drinking watching porn and other stuff)? I don't want my parents know so... that's the reason.. and it's OK if I used AVR for my first thingys I made?
Anyone can order one. You can use an avr micro but you will need to convert the source code (which is written for a pic micro). You will also need to make an adapter so that the avr will connect to the rest of the circuit properly.
The kit is based around a pic microcontroller so all the example files are all written for that.
Just let me know if you still want one - postage to the US is $10 for airmail.
I just got a 8-bit PIC. How do you control matrix displays like that and will 8-bit work with 16x16 or even more resolution display?

1:21 looks like Zelda
1:41 looks like Super Mario Bros
With a 16x16 matrix it would be even better.

and what are the 4 SMD chips for?
driving the matrix? or eeprom for the game?

can you make a snake game?

@antoine5612 It certainly would be possible with this little game system although I have not programmed the game myself.

How much programming memory was left over in the adventure game?
Are those flash chips?

There's no way to get rid of the flickering is there?
AndrianGo 2 years ago
Yes!
Just don't look at the LED display through a camera = )
The screen doesn't normally flicker, it only flickers due to the refresh rate of the video camera.
00retrobrad00 2 years ago
:)
Did you have to do double buffering anyways?

I must get around to completing that game!
At the moment you can just wander around - but there's nothing to pick up and no bad guys. I'll have to get around to making it a complete game = )
00retrobrad00 3 years ago
eventually it can be done using less transistors/resistors.
see my new video: 105 LEDs, and only 5 transistors, 5 resistors.
also for PIC.
