I've got some questions i'd love to have answered. Are the smaller caps more potent than larger ones of the same species. Does eating them fresh instead of dried cause any significant difference in the effects or dosage? Any insight would be appreciated.

@InKa4484 Some people say that the dried mushrooms are more potent, others say this is only if heat is used in the drying process. As for your first question I don't know about psilocybin semilanceata, but for psilocybin cubensis (which are way more common in the US) I am fairly certain there should be no difference between large or small caps (apart that large caps obviously equal a larger dose, lol). Don't take my word for it though.

@nastasiafilippovna I've never heard that dried ones are more potent, i could understand by weight considering a fresh one weighs ten times more. There are 3 hallucinogenic chemicals that degrade when drying, leaving only psilocybin which your body turns to psilocin. Fresh mushrooms contain psilocin and two other chemicals i can't remember the names of, so i imagine they are more potent. I'll find out soon spring rains are here and i live surrounded by cattle pastures.

@InKa4484 oops, I meant to write the opposite of what I wrote; that some people say that the dried shrooms are LESS potent, but others claim this is only if heat is used in the drying process. Both fresh mushrooms and dried ones contain psilocin and psilocybin and a variety of other hallucinogens, but those two are the "main" ones so to speak.

@murphyhurtme Tear the cap and make sure it turns blue, then make a spore print and if it's purple, blue, or black you know it's good. I live in the southern US, and according to a site there are only 2 species of psilcoybes where i live. I've only seen one and they are a lot bigger than these.

Dont know about the UK, but on the Oregon coast in the cow pasture, the very same mushrooms as in this video grow in the fall, I have never found them in the spring, have look , found other types of majic shrooms, not as good. Be sure & use a field guide.

Liberty Caps are mainly found in north facing fields, in the open, avoid trees, best time is around late September, make sure the grass isn't freshly cut. Be sure to be looking at the ground below the grass as sometimes your surprised as to how well they can hide amongst relatively short grass. A good technique is to walk very slowly and go in the morning as sometimes they can be spotted from afar by a thin haze above patches.

Yes but alot of the time they're picked before they can drop alot of spores making the next seasons harvest less and less.

Always flick their heads two or 3 times when picking in the wild, it encourages more spores to drop.

After a wet summer you can begin searching at the beginning of September, if not so wet then a couple of weeks later. The higher the altitude the earlier the season, the Pennines are great. As the season progresses and October is the most fruitful month, search South facing fields as the season grows colder. An old head once told me 'they will find you when the leaves begin to fall'. I suppose that's a safe bet. Happy Hunting.
