Have any of you looked at Randy in his 30's, playing songs like "Birmingham"? He was a slender, attractive man. I mean, c'mon, people gain weight when they get older, but WTF???? Yeah, the audience is a real joy, particularly the guy at about 1:05 who is scratching his chest. See Randy's performance of this song in '94 in Berlin .... totally different and way better. Randy, I think it's time for you to stop touring and just stay home. Sad, but true ...
Guys, maybe the reason the crowd are not responding is that they are German. They might just not understand what Randy is saying. When he speaks slow, they seem to understand. Idiom is hard to understand, if it isn't your mother tongue.
ONLY Randy can sing this one, sorry... It's been one of my favorites by him for years and just came to mind when hubby walked in the bedroom. GOODNIGHT! Celebrating 16 years of wedded bliss on day after tomorrow and we are over 60, DEAL WITH IT, YOUNG'UNS!
Randy's "Short People" is one of the best off beat songs ever. A Randy fan loves anything he does, even if he is singing words out of a "How To Act Proper" book.
Thanks, I love Randy and everything he does, especially Short People that was critisized, but I think of it as kids that are short, not people who are short.
It probably has less to do with being German and more to do with the distinct possibility that many of them might not understand what he is saying (I mean, he is singing in English, with a pretty heavy drawl)..... and if people understand the words, they might not understand the subtle innuendos that you need to be a native English speaker to understand. I bet if the same words were in German, the crowd would be more animated.
dercucumber - guten abend - Actually, the Joe Cocker version is more like Randy Newman's original studio version, but with bigger orchestration... thanks for your comment, tho - zehr interesant zu lesen.
I've never heard anyone but Randy Newman get the right amount of seediness into this song - probably because he wrote it and knows exactly how to deliver it.
best singer/song writer of all time!!!

Joe Cocker's version sounds good, but I prefer Randy, you can hear that he wrote it as a joke when he sings it himself

@durgaaa Tom Jones' was my fave. A lot of people like the Cocker version, but the Full Monty was just too good.

@shimyshimyyea I was shocked when I found out he wrote this. I was thinking "The Toy Story guy wrote a stripper song"?

@shimyshimyyea
Maybe that's because it never intended to be a sexual song. It's actually a song about voyeurism.
