  • Dave is so sick. Saw him play with herbie hancock and after the show shook his hand and I was like DUDE you were on bitches brew!! Asked him questions about his bass too. A class act and gentleman

  • Even though I am a youngster bass player in the world of Jazz, I am at the standard where I can play pretty much anything (within reason) and I just want to say this "God can you all shut up and stop analysing everything and stop nerding out and saying "oh yeh well this was composed because..... blah blah blah" and just enjoy the music?"

  • I don't know another bassplayer whos lines are as lyrical as Holland's. I couldn't sing stuff as cool as he plucks out on upright.

  • Outstanding. I miss Joe Henderson so much.

  • damn dave holland! I shook hands with this badass.

  • nice

  • very inspiring! he's the coolest grooves of all! even though the drummer drops out i still hear a click, click ...??? maybe he is still doing the cross stick thing...

  • No, i believe the 'clicking' is just Dave tapping his feet. (wach 2'50" it looks as he's actually walking while playing, really nice!)

  • @bijouxmusic Thats a foot tapping

  • One of my masters, he is so so! good with it. Pure pleasure to listen.

  • very rich sounding

  • I didn't even realize until more than halfway through the solo that he was playing unaccompanied. His sense of time keeps the grove going strong even when he's soloing.

  • @mindbodylightsound10 well the drummers grooving quietly in the back ground :) yay to drummers.

i cant believe i dont know dave holland, hes amazing!

  • Rasist prick!

  • race has nothing to do with talent. your intelligence lacks. plus good music never stemmed from hate. your a douche. I hope you get some serious illness that makes it so you can't put ignorant comments on youtube that end up offending people who are actually worth conversing with about good music. stanley clarke, victor wooten, jaco pastorius, dave holland. All are amazing. not because of their skin, but their dedication to the instrument. This is proof racism isn't just whites to black.

  • woops! I meant to post this as a reply to that bigot "xxxxrhodesxxxx".

  • Wagner contradicts the statement about hate not making good music.

  • true, but it depends on what kind of music your talking about. whether its metal, grunge, or dark classical (like penderecki, gyorgy ligeti) sure hate helps, but this is a loving jazz piece. hate didn't go into this composition.

  • "never goes into good music"

  • yeah. I was correcting myself.

  • @blainethebassist: I think you were correct with your original statement, "good music never stemmed from hate." Penderecki composed his "Threnody" because of his love and empathy for the victims of Hiroshima. Though he hated the acts of war, love for his fellow man was the genesis. The same sort of argument could be applied to grunge and metal. Ligeti wasn't really an emotional composer. His was a love for theory. I don't think he ever viewed his music as "dark."

  • @brandon71085 thankyou!

  • @blainethebassist (Cont...) Wagner, though he was a hateful man in many regards, never (to my knowledge) drew upon his hate when composing "Parsifal", or "Tristan," etc.

Ultimately love and hate are dichotomous. So I guess that makes this whole discussion moot to a certain extent. I guess it's just my optimistic side that believes that the love aspect moves people to action.

  • @blainethebassist

Absolutely. All the goofs talkin about race in Jazz are terrible wrong.

Just remember Django Reinhardt, a european Gypsy inspiring the Jazz scene in the States in the 30s. Was he black ? - No - Could he swing ? - Hell, he could. You see, an intelligent musician who loves and lives his instrument doesn't have to be black or white to play a certain kind of music. It's about hard work on yourself and on your instrument.

  • Uh... What are you talking about?

  • Man I love Dave Holland! I'll never forget the first time I heard his tune "Homecoming"... a relevlation!

  • Amazing intonation

  • MY GOD THAT WAS BEAUTIFUL!!!! I intended to shout that.

  • Dave is so good.

  • WHOA I've never really heard Dave Holland and I am thoroughly impressed. What a great sense of melody and harmony

  • wow! is this entire video available somewhere?

  • this solo is unbelievablee... thank you!
