nice pipes there - - always hard to tell on a video / recording but it seems like it the sound is awesome. One of our R1's has Graves pipes on it that we shortened, and it also sounds bad ass
@BombEveryWall thats how every bike is. Even when in neutral there is still some pressure on the gearbox. Thats why in pretty much every owners manual it says don't race the engine while in neutral
It is Japanese inline 4 but difference is that firing order is changed fro 1&3-2&4 to 1-3-2-4 so that bike can get more from same engine. That is the main reason why bike sound like American muscle car when its on idle and crazy ass sound when its running in higher RPM levels.
I do love the sound of this bike. But I was reading some of the other posts and I have to agree. It is kinda of strange that it sounds more like an american muscle car than a japanese sports bike. At least at idle it does.
I do love the sound of this bike. But I was reading some of the other posts and I have to agree. It is kinda of strange that it sounds more like muscle car than a crotch rocket. At least at idle it does.
Super! When people change their exhaust from the stock that came with the bike, do they need to also remap the motor in order to optimize the fuel/air mixture, or is when the dealership tells people that they need to remap, the dealership is just trying to make more money. Also, with so many different pipes to choose from on the market, does it really make a difference in hp/torque which pipes to go with? Finally, 1 pipe vs. 2, does that matter in terms of hp/torque or just the sound. thx!
@hayabusarider168 You nick being 'hayabusarider' probably means that you're not a hayabusa rider from asking such basic questions you can answer yourself using google
how could you comment that aweasome sound l dont understand, this is not japan bike sound and this sound doesnt newer fit to yamaha r1.thats horrible, like ducati or chainsaw.l wont buy this bike because of this sound.
Finally. An inline 4 that sounds fantastic! I could become one of those guys who runs his bike in the garage on rainy days just to hear it's burble n snort - makethenoise Yamaha..
Beaitiful , o owned a yzf r6 and now i have tdm 900.. When i can afford again , im gonna buy r1 also.. For me thats the most beatifull color of r1.. Yamaha forever.. Drive safe..
@obitracks28 It's got a cross-plain crank shaft which simply put means that cylinders one and two fire at nearly the same time, and 3 and 4 fire at nearly the same time.
It's technology that's trickled down from their MotoGP M1.
@rcoveyduc are you sure? cause i coulda sworn that each piston is set 90 degrees off from the next (90 180 270 360) i could be thinkin of somethin else though im kinda drunk right now haha...all i know is that my 2010 r1 is fuckin nasty
@thrasha666 It's actually the same firing order you will find in a V8. So it's simply a V8 you cut in half. Sounds stupid 'cuz that logically equals an Inline-Four but the firing order is just different.
@ManiaCop100 Why? Because it's a sport bike. With such an amazing tone why supress it? It's safer to be louder. And I like the sound of the race bikes, why pay 800 bucks for stock sounding pipes with deep idles.
@ManiaCop100 Those pipes have a catalytic converter which decreases airflow which decreases horsepower. So, if he put a full system on it should be louder. However, noise doesn't effect performance, however you look at a lot of the high performance exhaust and they don't run cats or even baffles, like brocks and so on. It's a hard call, but if you can choose, I would always go loud because sportbikes sound so amazing.
@Kalustian7 its actually not safe either way, there have been studies that show that loud pipes only increase your chances of being noticed by about %5 which if your dealing with an inattentive motorist or a soccer mom, doesnt really make a difference...but i agree with the sound
@thrasha666 I don't know where you got the statistic. If loud to you is this, then maybe ya 5% with those m4's. But an actually loud exhaust, you can hear from 2-3 miles away. I have the riot exhaust, WITH the silent-tech packing still in it and you can hear me from a couple miles away. You could probably be a quarter mile ahead of me and still hear it on the highway.
@Kalustian7 ya i didnt say that these were loud now did i? and the studies were done on harleys with the pipes (or similar) that your talking about where u can hear from miles away, and it showed that drivers that wouldnt have noticed u (if u didnt have them) still wont, the drivers that would have, would notice u even more, i took out one of my r1s with no exhaust system at all on it (goofing around and figured wth) and that thing was louder then a semi and cars still didnt pay attention
@thrasha666 I ran straight pipe for a day and about 25% of people moved out of my life on the road let alone heard me, without tailgating. It got so much attention, so it's hard for me to agree. Of course some drivers are out in left field most of the time, but that's a small percentage. I think common sense would tell you loud pipes get you noticed, by other cars and unfortunately cops, but it also intimidates them to get out of your way. All in all, I love my loud pipes...
@Kalustian7 im not saying they dont make any difference, just not enough to really protect u, at least not in my state cause my state is nothing but stupid women and old people..mainly stupid women tho
@thrasha666 Nothing is enough to "really protect you", but every little thing you do adds up. You'll never see me in a reflector vest, i'm always "ghost riding", but yeah. 9/10 shit drivers are old ass people and women. The other 10% are shitty teen drivers. Not all teen drivers tho, but some.
@Kalustian7 true, well everything that ive seen in the states i ride in, even with some obnoxiously loud pipe that actually made me deaf (my dads bike when i rode it a few years ago), the drivers regardless of who they are dont really seem to care or notice either way, its like they just pass it off as a semi or a heli or something
Holy Shit I luv this bike but I'm torn between this and the fireblade, I like r1 because of the nice exhaust notes and I like the 1000rr because of it's lightness. But either way I still pull all the bitches on the block.
Yea its amazing sound! everytime i hear it in real life and see it i get a crazy chill down my spine its like a fucking predator beast headead your way! And its sound and feels ten times better in real life. Good work yamaha!
I wanna thank the guys at m4 exhaust. I just purchased the m4 exhaust with the cat eliminator pipe for my 09 r1. The video doesn't do justice! The sound is unbelievable along with amazing looks. My garage is shaking violently when my whip is rev'd. Videos will be posted soon.....
There are lots of videos here on youtube to help explain what is being accomplished by the crossplane crank. These vids might help folks understand what it is that you are hearing. Your ER-6N will not sound anything like this engine. It's not the exhaust that's making the sound. The M4's are prolly great cans. Learn about this motor and what Yamaha has done. MY MISTAKE MY MISTAKE i meant to say that i hope suzuki honda and kawasaki DONT do the same with their awesome 1000s but a 180 hp r1 crank thingy would be cool
yamaha changes racing again, the first time some dragged the knees on the ground was on a yellow and black yamaha in the late 70s or early mid 80s, then in 1998 yamaha decided to cram a 1000cc engine in a 600 body, that also gave bike a 1.1 power to weight ratio which was also a first, then suzuki and the rest followed now they're putting a crank thingy in inline 4s like the yamahas in moto gp i hope gixxers xz10rs and honda 1000rr do the same but then again this new r1 with 180 hp WOW!
SHIT MAN IT SOUNDS LIKE A MUFFLED HARLEY, my r1 has full M4 exhaust and it sounds like a pro race bike, i guess the new crossplane crank shaft is responsible for that v twinish sound
are the dyno charts on the m4 web site accurate? were they done or not done with a power commander? cus I was considering the system with the cat delete but the numbers are dissapointing, especially since it looks like you lose power in certain spots
Why do some bikes sound like this like the ducati and the RC8 its like no longer the normal sound u know what i mean? Did they change the engine? normal bikes sound like the old R1 but nowadays more bikes sound like this
The Ducati Superbikes as well as the KTM RC8 use 2 cylinder motors, which in general have a lower tone. The 09/10 R1 has an uneven firing order but still has 4 cylinders. It's that uneven firing order that changes its sound from the previous generation R1s.
No slips are mostly for looks most sportbikes today have cats so a full system will both shed the weight of the cat and also increase exhaust flow hence more power. Nice try though.
Check out that massive number plate hanger! Awfull, mind you most Americans will cover a normal sized hanger with their ass so I guess they have those in America.
Wow!! Im estatic about this news because i was planning to get a full system in addition to my slip ons. Do you think a power commander would make a difference on this shape aswell? and would the changes be noticable if any?
my opinion hear the sound in person ,audio record just mess up the sound , the 09 R1 actually sounds more awsome than then previous model it gives u a powerfull thrills when hearing it
Exactly you freakin wiseass... the gears are always running each other, but the selectors are not engaging all the gears. They SHOULD in theory not transfer any power in neutral, but since the motor oil is thick, and it's still cold, it will transfer a little power... but not as much as if there were no oil.
Have you no reading comprehension? I said it transfers (not creates, because the transmission oil does not CREATE power. Word your ideas better) a little amount of power, because it's cold, and thick. The oil is not made so much to reduce friction, as to preserve the internal components of the engine, in fact, the crankshaft floats in a thin, high pressure film of oil... the gears don't. And lastly, I said that would there be no oil, the wheel would move even more. WISE ASS.
Hah, giving up because you lack the proper tools of knowledge to reply. Do you think you're what, coming into a video and automatically becoming educated? Do you think I have not studied? And that I do not understand the concepts of static and dynamic friction? Lubricity? Viscosity? Newtonian and anti-Newtonian fluid properties? I want to be an aerodynamics engineer, I've got to study Rheology. Look it up chap, try and argue with me then.
Ducatis suck. As a prior owner of one i live a lot happier with my 07' R1. Italians r awesome designers...don't get me wrong. However, Ducatis tend to be high maintenance, fragile bikes. In my book that earns them a U SUCK badge. Sorry.
not really accurate. my S4Rs monster ran perfect off the floor. i did some exhaust work and that started the problems!!
but, i did a power commander and dyno tune and it has since run as smooth as you can imagine. did my scheduled 7.5k service and now coming up on 10k miles without any problems.
in general, probably more work to set up properly compared to the japanese bikes, but not fragile. my 999 motor should run a long long time!!
I got an 07 r1 also, ride it all the time and thrash it one the track and on the mountains & canyons. I have no maintenance issues. I love it. my good buddy has two Ducs and one MV agusta. we gotta pull the engines on those frequently.
Glad to hear that viper, the R1 seems to be a battle hardened machine. u know...i fly helicopters for a living...blackhawks to be exact. the R1 somehow makes me feel like im still in the cockpit. i feel that confident. i was never able to get that from any Ducati. italian bikes look great...but i'll take my R1 over any of them.
wow man, I work on ah 1w supercobras and uh 1n hueys. starting to work on the four bladed cobras and hueys. Thats why my friends and I know how to tear apart a motorcycle and put it together. enjoy the flights, and ride safe.
lol cuz the plate from the crank spins spins the oil that also spins the friction plate kinda like how torque converter on an automatic transition on a car
I dont know if I like it or not.. it look is just a little different, the sound is the worst thing i have ever listened to before a ducati.. but ducati are more prity than this one. And about the new cbr 1000, i used to HATE IT, since I had one infront of me and I said, oh my gosh, it's unmazing and sooooooooooooooooo beauty...
well the R1 is the best superbike at the moment and unfortunately one of the worse looking one for me only the new gsxr is uglier . Why did they changed the styling ? The old R1 was a beauty.
For what, endless repair bills overpriced and services every 5 minutes..Ye Ducati rule in that area..And another thing..Ducatis are great track bikes, but when it comes down to whats realy going on witch is most of the riders dont go to track days, Japanese bikes are most user friendly and you can get any part for it at almost around the corner .But if your a poser jeans rider with ducati jacket..Nothing better than a Ducati.
My two friends have Ducatis and no problems with them ..... Ducati has a sole which japanese bikes are missing but all the bikes are great its just Ducati is something special and I wish I could afford to have one.
thats so funny, do you think alfa's have soul too, italian bikes and cars always have soul lol the japs are just angry machines thats y i chose gsxr lol
I don't like the new look of it too. The 2004 R1 had in my opinion the best look of all R1's. I prefered the smaller air-intakes in the front. But, everybody has a different taste.
nice pipes there - - always hard to tell on a video / recording but it seems like it the sound is awesome. One of our R1's has Graves pipes on it that we shortened, and it also sounds bad ass

Thats why we buy fender eliminators in america at least we dont have to have those ugly huge plates used in other countrys.

No way is that just end cans!! Sounds like a full system there, especially the way it climbs the revs!!!
Hecktickid 2 years ago
@Hecktickid it's probably the system that replaces the cc. i have that bike with that system. without the system, the the revs still climb.
r1ravenr6raven 2 years ago
THe cans vs full system, Specs say no benifit from a full system
spadastunter 2 years ago
Are you serious?! so eliminating the exup valve would make no difference? Surely not!
Hecktickid 2 years ago
Positive.. We tested a full system vs a slip on for the yoshi and no difference in hp gain
spadastunter 2 years ago
Wow!! Im estatic about this news because i was planning to get a full system in addition to my slip ons. Do you think a power commander would make a difference on this shape aswell? and would the changes be noticable if any?
Hecktickid 2 years ago
A power commander allways helps. The reason there isnt a gain from a full system is because the r1's headers are made that good :D
spadastunter 2 years ago
what a dreambike. i would change it for my ninja at any time. although i love my ninja -.-

interesting new R1 . Went from all top end for the past few years to the gruntiest R1 ever.
poptube87 2 years ago
The rear tire is movin because, the dense oil in the gearbox is transfering some momentum.
You can stop it with your hand.
razortec 2 years ago 10
@razortec oh i thought it waz moving becuz it waz in first gear, guess i was wrong
RuDeRaStAfArIaN 1 year ago
@RuDeRaStAfArIaN i think 1st gear goes faster than 3 mph ya?
buttkins 1 year ago
@buttkins i know that, im talking about just leting it sit there in first gear, without pulling back the throttle ya?
RuDeRaStAfArIaN 1 year ago
@buttkins but he waz just playing with the throttle, not pulling it back hard, but like i said i made a mistake
RuDeRaStAfArIaN 1 year ago
@razortec
no.... its because its a constant mesh gearbox
k0ent 1 year ago
@k0ent
Exactly you freakin wiseass... the gears are always running each other, but the selectors are not engaging all the gears. They SHOULD in theory not transfer any power in neutral, but since the motor oil is thick, and it's still cold, it will transfer a little power... but not as much as if there were no oil.
corotor12345 1 year ago
@corotor12345
the oil doesnt create the movement, the friction between the shafts and gears does, 'wiseass'
in fact, the oil actualy REDUCES the amount of friction between the shaft and the gears
k0ent 1 year ago
@k0ent
WISE ASS.
corotor12345 1 year ago
@corotor12345
im giving up on you, you obviously dont understand my meaning..
k0ent 1 year ago
@k0ent
Look it up chap, try and argue with me then.

what did yamaha do to the new R1's, they it sounds more deeper then other 4 cylinders.

Ducatis suck. As a prior owner of one i live a lot happier with my 07' R1. Italians r awesome designers...don't get me wrong. However, Ducatis tend to be high maintenance, fragile bikes. In my book that earns them a U SUCK badge. Sorry.
skygonzo 2 years ago 2
not really accurate. my S4Rs monster ran perfect off the floor. i did some exhaust work and that started the problems!!
but, i did a power commander and dyno tune and it has since run as smooth as you can imagine. did my scheduled 7.5k service and now coming up on 10k miles without any problems.
in general, probably more work to set up properly compared to the japanese bikes, but not fragile. my 999 motor should run a long long time!!
44pullups 2 years ago
I got an 07 r1 also, ride it all the time and thrash it one the track and on the mountains & canyons. I have no maintenance issues. I love it. my good buddy has two Ducs and one MV agusta. we gotta pull the engines on those frequently.
viper22jc 2 years ago

The old R1 was a beauty.
a6km 2 years ago
I think the new fireblade looks even worse. they used to look aggressive, now they lost it.
DerTommy86 2 years ago 5
thank god for ducati :)
a6km 2 years ago
For what, endless repair bills overpriced and services every 5 minutes..Ye Ducati rule in that area..And another thing..Ducatis are great track bikes, but when it comes down to whats realy going on witch is most of the riders dont go to track days, Japanese bikes are most user friendly and you can get any part for it at almost around the corner .But if your a poser jeans rider with ducati jacket..Nothing better than a Ducati.
Brainiac83 2 years ago
My two friends have Ducatis and no problems with them ..... Ducati has a sole which japanese bikes are missing but all the bikes are great its just Ducati is something special and I wish I could afford to have one.
a6km 2 years ago
thats so funny, do you think alfa's have soul too, italian bikes and cars always have soul lol the japs are just angry machines thats y i chose gsxr lol

Yeh it does look like a piece of shit now...but it's supposed to look that way for "better control and airflow"...meh
Nucleariasi 2 years ago
I don't like the new look of it too. The 2004 R1 had in my opinion the best look of all R1's. I prefered the smaller air-intakes in the front. But, everybody has a different taste.
