The problem was the way he advertised it as a "competing currency", "coin", and the deception he instructed merchants to use to mix the "coins" in with the change given to customers unbeknownst to the customers.

Had he used different tactics and verbiage, there would be no issue as other corporations, states, localities, and communities have barter of tangible goods and scripts based on precious metals.

The movement is blowing this way out of porportion and stripping out the meat of the case.

Again, I am not disagreeing with what the man was trying to do. I agree with it. The problem was HOW HE WAS DOING IT. Please do your homework. It can't make them legal tender, but it can allow them to circulate. Whatever people decide to transact in is their business, and the Constitution nowhere prohibits them from choosing whatever medium of exchange suits them.

Von Nothaus' money was real. He didn't try to defraud anyone. The rounds were what they said they were, a specific amount of silver, gold, or copper. He was doing what an honest Congress would do if they were in fact honest. To be a criminal, you must encroach on someone's rights ie seize or damage their property, take their freedom and put them in bondage, or defraud them. None of which this man is guilty and all of which has been committed against him. Tompkins belongs to a gang of bandits.
