It's a sweet song with a sweet message in a crazy messed-up, unfriendly world. Why aren't there more songs like this??? RIP Andrew Gold and The Golden Girls...love you and miss you all.
Always gives me the chills to hear this song, I always remember it being the song on the end of the 1979 Ripper Hoax tapes. "Hope you like the catchy tune at the end. Ha Ha'
was the rather sarcastic message aimed at the senior Detective George Oldfield.
I love this song, every second & word, the thing I love better than having friends, is being a freind! Thank you Andrew, tho most of us never knew you or ever had the pleasure to meet you, you had, even tho recenly leaving us to go to a better place, you had a way that made us all feel like/want to be your friend, I salute you, and thank you for the memories, and like the song so rightly said...I think 1 day beyond, I will hear ur voice, say"you're late, then say, thank you for being a friend."
Thank YOU milky way dude xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo ......... blessings to you and yours forever ..... i LOVE this song ..... it is my favorite thanksgiving song.
I'm not sure. It's some kind of synth that he's using for the strings. It's sitting on top of what looks like a Rhodes suitcase keyboard. But I'm not positive.
It is a synth. A lot of 'high end' keyboards can accomplish what he is playing..as simple as it is. It costs money for that kind of clarity though...or atleast a good sound mixer with a cheap keyboard.
Who is that scary drummer? Kenny Buttrey? As for this song, it's a very, very cleverly written song, with great lyrics and melody, and it's coupled with a great performance.
I sent this video to some internet-friends--know most of them through Fantasy Sports. Especially an Uber Group on ESPN where we are an extended family of sorts.
Yes, this was an early '70's song and is not "up-to-date." But it expressed what I was trying to say about thanking friends on Thanksgiving well enough.
this reminds me off my friend Duke...we both served in iraq togeter. however he was killed. about a month before we were able to go back he was shot to death. he was my BEST friend. its been a few weeks sence i was in iraq...he was shot 4 times in the chest...i rember shooting back and picking him up and runing like hell. when i put him down he said"if i die tell my girl friend i love her. he died right after saying that. i rember crying like never did before.
3 rock e... if you don't like a song, just don't listen to it again, just keep the bad lanuage down please, there are kids who are listening and watching..
I miss a lot of my friends that died young... I want to thank them all for being my friend.. This song is for all who have their friends and for those that want to remember those that are gone... This song is for them...
This is the great long version. Back then I bought the 45 and took it back home to play it and it was the long version and I did not know that there was one. I thought there was something wrong with my 45 because it did not sound just like the song on the radio. Does any one still have there original 45 from back then? I do! I still have all my 45's from the 70's.
Think of all the good times they had on the show...all the laughs, the fun, the LOVE they they shared for six long wonderful years! We all die but how many of us laugh and love one another like the four of them did?
i dedicte this song to my friend Duke....he died a few weeks ago. we were both in the usa merines. Duke was the best man i ever knew. he will always be a friend to me......thank you Duke for being a friend.......
This great quote was written by Dr William Ellery Channing, many years before Andrew Gold would be born and write this great song. The bond of mutual respect, appreciation and value for one another in the bond of sincern friendship crosses the divide of time and space.
William Ellery Channing (April 7, 1780 October 2, 1842),
Title Friends.
"A friend is he who sets his heart upon us, is happy with us and delights in us; does for us what we want, is willing and fully engaged to do all he can for us, on whom we can rely in all cases".
I thought she was but she didn't think so. She had the best sense of humor, even when she became ill. She pulled some pranks, especially phone ones. Bill collectors would call, she'd put them on hold and have the music play, people would call who had the wrong number and she'd make up a story sometimes. Once she told this guy, no Bill's not here, he's in jail. The guy was shocked and she made up a whole story. Ha Ha I wonder what happened when he got ahold of Bill later.
i deticate this song to my friend Duke. he died by my side about 3 weeks ago. we were in the merine core. he was shot 4 times in the chest by a ak 47. he died in my arms. he was the best friend i could have ever asked for. thank you duke for being a friend...
I dedicate this song to Luis, you helped me to get through the most critical time of my life unknowing that I was "Autistic",had it not been for the great things that you taught to me visually I couuld have not made it though to this present day.I owe to you my life,literally.Thank-you.
I heard this song on radio last night. The part about lacking a car made me think of a friend that really needs a car. That verse really helped me to think and come to a decision about something that I think might just happen in her benefit. If I'm able, I'm going to give her the car at end of Sept if the Good Lord's willing and the creek doesn't rise.
hey so did i. i just got back from iraq 3 days ago and it reminded me of all of my friend that were in iraq with me. the thing that sucks is that most of them were killed in iraq.
In 1990, Andrew Gold appeared on the Ray Combs Family Feud with his family. He got another shot at the Feud in 1991. And in 1992, he and his wife appeared on the short lived syndicated game show Bedroom Buddies, hosted by VH1 VJ Bobby Rivers.
This song reminds me of my graduation party. Well, my farewell party because I had to migrate to another country after years of learning with my awesome friends.
This song peaked at #25 on The Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the spring of 1978, more than 7 years before "The Golden Girls" debuted on NBC-TV in September of 1985. When I first saw the TV show that year, I already knew about this excellent original version. :-D Thanks for posting this!
