  • RIP Andrew Gold

  • @dits17 Andrew Gold caught Aids from Freddie Mercury

  • Andrew Gold was one of a kind. Loved his songs. Today's music has no real "feeling" like the way Gold's music had. So sadly missed!

  • It's a sweet song with a sweet message in a crazy messed-up, unfriendly world. Why aren't there more songs like this??? RIP Andrew Gold and The Golden Girls...love you and miss you all.

  • how the hell does this have less than 100k views?!

  • I prefer this version to the Jennifer Warnes version.

  • RIP Andrew Gold and 3 Golden Girls (Bea, Rue & Estelle).

  • Always gives me the chills to hear this song, I always remember it being the song on the end of the 1979 Ripper Hoax tapes. "Hope you like the catchy tune at the end. Ha Ha'

was the rather sarcastic message aimed at the senior Detective George Oldfield.

  • betty white got me here!

  • I used to shoot a mixture of heroin and drano to this record! thank God for the Sex Pistols!

  • Shame that Andrew never got old and went grey like he sings about in the song, so sad

  • I love this song, every second & word, the thing I love better than having friends, is being a freind! Thank you Andrew, tho most of us never knew you or ever had the pleasure to meet you, you had, even tho recenly leaving us to go to a better place, you had a way that made us all feel like/want to be your friend, I salute you, and thank you for the memories, and like the song so rightly said...I think 1 day beyond, I will hear ur voice, say"you're late, then say, thank you for being a friend."

  • RIP..... nice self

  • Thank you for showing us how to be a friend!! i would have loved to hev been your friend!

  • Great song but kinda creepy where he sings "and when we die and go away..." Knowing that he recently passed on It gave me chills.

  • Loved the song, hated the show.

  • R.I.P. Andrew.

I could have sworn hearing this song play a pitch lower when I saw this video on VH1 Classic in 2002/3

  • great song... sometimes they earn the title "classic" and this one is

  • Andrew Gold, I want to thank YOU for being a friend. Rest in peace.

  • i loved watching the golden girls - and i loved this song - memories

  • 2:44 - 3:23 always relaxes me for some reason.

  • The 70s ruled for the music industry!! Im sooo glad I grew up in those days!!This song still gives me chills after all these years

  • golden girls theme song

  • Merci beaucoup, Florian :)

  • i love this song! we sang it at our 5th grade graduation!

  • this song is forever.

  • What type of instrument is the guy on the other keyboard instrument playing? Is it some type of synthesizer? Does anyone know what kind?

  • I'm not sure. It's some kind of synth that he's using for the strings. It's sitting on top of what looks like a Rhodes suitcase keyboard. But I'm not positive.

  • It is a synth. A lot of 'high end' keyboards can accomplish what he is playing..as simple as it is. It costs money for that kind of clarity though...or atleast a good sound mixer with a cheap keyboard.

  • Who is that scary drummer? Kenny Buttrey? As for this song, it's a very, very cleverly written song, with great lyrics and melody, and it's coupled with a great performance.

  • Thank you, I forgot how much mimics music. I love this song and the people it reminds me of today.

  • 2.45 still haunts me today, 30 years after first hearing it!!

Andrew Gold, Harry Chapin, Dean Freidman, Rupert Holmes, Christopher Cross; they just don't make 'em like that anymore!!

  • I lve this song, we sang it at our 5th grade gratuation

  • Rather says it all doesn't it.

    Nice

    xx

  • isn't that richard simmons at 1:33?

  • thier beards are awesome!

  • That drummer has sadly passed away. I remember being scared as a kid when I saw him!

  • sounds like tmc reopened the catechism book, it good to be thankful, and hardely ever to late ;)

  • Great Great song!!

Really don't make 'em like this anymore & I'm only 26...

If you like this song Youtube search: Salem Al Fakir "Good Song" or "This Is Who I am" or "It's true", you'll like them ;-)

  • A great song...thank you.

  • I sent this video to some internet-friends--know most of them through Fantasy Sports. Especially an Uber Group on ESPN where we are an extended family of sorts.

Yes, this was an early '70's song and is not "up-to-date." But it expressed what I was trying to say about thanking friends on Thanksgiving well enough.

  • you guys need to grow up and just appreciate good music.

if you don't like it then just go elsewhere

don't spoil it for the people who do, great song Andrew...

  • emnmtampa..

just keep the bad language down please...

  • This version has an ELO sound to it. Of course it was the 70s, so I am sure that had something to do with it.

  • He worked with 10cc and set up Wax with an ex 10cc member

  • thank you for being a friend.

travel down the road and bak again.

your heart is true your a pal and a confidant

sry i just love this song.

  • wow, Im glad i never had to live through the 70s...

  • One more thing,

Thank you friend for uploading this!!

  • This is the great long version. Back then I bought the 45 and took it back home to play it and it was the long version and I did not know that there was one. I thought there was something wrong with my 45 because it did not sound just like the song on the radio. Does any one still have there original 45 from back then? I do! I still have all my 45's from the 70's.

Think of all the good times they had on the show...all the laughs, the fun, the LOVE they they shared for six long wonderful years! We all die but how many of us laugh and love one another like the four of them did?

  • ah yes it is true, haha i always laugh at them.

"fidel: i was once the most famous fidel in all of cuba till you know who showed up!

  • i dedicte this song to my friend Duke....he died a few weeks ago. we were both in the usa merines. Duke was the best man i ever knew. he will always be a friend to me......thank you Duke for being a friend.......

  • This song is so sweet.

  • "A friend is he who sets his heart upon us"

This great quote was written by Dr William Ellery Channing, many years before Andrew Gold would be born and write this great song. The bond of mutual respect, appreciation and value for one another in the bond of sincern friendship crosses the divide of time and space.

  • William Ellery Channing (April 7, 1780 October 2, 1842),

    Title Friends.

"A friend is he who sets his heart upon us, is happy with us and delights in us; does for us what we want, is willing and fully engaged to do all he can for us, on whom we can rely in all cases".

  • This my friends is an exampe of a powerful man beard

  • This song is so great when he sings it. :-D

  • Sounds like an American ELO! I like this.

  • I'd like to dedicate this wonderful song to Sam. You and I both know we will never be more than friends but we can always dream!

    Thanks friend!

  • my names sam :)

This guy looks so awesome. I want a beard

  • This song also reminds me of my best friend

    who is no longer here.

  • why is she no longer here?

  • She passed away in 2006 due to Lymphodema.

  • I'm really sorry for your lost. How long have you been friends ? how old was she?

  • Sorry In my last reply to you i mean LOSS not lost..

  • That's okay. I'm somewhat an older person.

:-D She was 50 when she passed and I knew

her since high school. She was three years

older than I because she had quit school

and come back. She was so happy when she

    got her diploma.

  • i gUess she was a very smart gal.:)

  • I thought she was but she didn't think so. She had the best sense of humor, even when she became ill. She pulled some pranks, especially phone ones. Bill collectors would call, she'd put them on hold and have the music play, people would call who had the wrong number and she'd make up a story sometimes. Once she told this guy, no Bill's not here, he's in jail. The guy was shocked and she made up a whole story. Ha Ha I wonder what happened when he got ahold of Bill later.
  • Hahah :) priceless :)

  • CHEESECAKE!!!

  • snipakidd788 Sorry you lost your friends. They're still in your memory and that's what counts; you won't forget them.

  • I heard this song on radio last night. The part about lacking a car made me think of a friend that really needs a car. That verse really helped me to think and come to a decision about something that I think might just happen in her benefit. If I'm able, I'm going to give her the car at end of Sept if the Good Lord's willing and the creek doesn't rise.

  • hey so did i. i just got back from iraq 3 days ago and it reminded me of all of my friend that were in iraq with me. the thing that sucks is that most of them were killed in iraq.

  • probably made you think about the innocent civilians too right?sorry for your loss

  • it sounds like it was recently made. dosen't sound old to me.

  • In 1990, Andrew Gold appeared on the Ray Combs Family Feud with his family. He got another shot at the Feud in 1991. And in 1992, he and his wife appeared on the short lived syndicated game show Bedroom Buddies, hosted by VH1 VJ Bobby Rivers.

  • Andrew Gold is known for his feel good songs! Thanks Andrew, for the "Lonely Boy"!Also, for the great hit, "Thank You For Being A Friend"!

  • This song peaked at #25 on The Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in the spring of 1978, more than 7 years before "The Golden Girls" debuted on NBC-TV in September of 1985. When I first saw the TV show that year, I already knew about this excellent original version. :-D Thanks for posting this!
