1991 was a cool year for Keanu Reeves as he did 2 cool movies where there was contributions from awesome bands.
Faith No More contributing to Bill & Ted 2 and of course RATT with Point Break.
'91, overall, was the last greatest year for rock music in terms of the amount of new quality material being released. It seemed like everyone had something on offer whether it be Megadeth, Armored Saint, Van Halen, Savatage, Metallica, Skid Row, Guns N' Roses, Sepultura, Anthrax, Dark Angel or Queen.
Ditto, I remember seeing bands like Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Poison and Ratt in bars in the Philly area ad the Jersey shore way back when. Before they became famous on a large scale.
u thought u could swim,guess u were wrong..2 bad .. met warren 11/22/06 atthe stones concert in la/dodger stadium..met stephen a couple of weeks ago,11/28/08,at angels roadhouse,yucaipa,cali..cool dudes.
They're all good. What happened after the second album?
Rattproved to everybody that they were not going be another band like Quiet Riot. Even the critics wrote that Ratt did not sufferfrom the Sophmore blues, Dancing Under Cover came out ( another kick ass album ) to NO fan fair??? No promotion at all. Next album AWESOME. Shame Shame Shame hit you like a boot in the face.
I think RATT's music videos could have been better. The Body Talk one needed to have more than just hyper-speed slow motion shots of the band in performance.
RATT never achieved the success of their first album due to not capitalizing on the
right singles and not having too much film/TV or magazine exposure.
Had they released Between The Eyes and You Should Know By Now as the 3rd & 4th singles (maybe even replacing You're In Love) then Invasion could have fared as well as Out from the Cellar.
The problem with Dancing Undercover was that they hoping that Eddie Murphy's 1986 movie would help promote the band (hence why the music video consisted of nothing else happening other than hyper-speed slow motion shots of the band performing).
As it turned out, their management had turned down the offer of having one of their songs on the soundtrack for Top Gun and, of course, as we all know that film became much bigger than Golden Child.
I m 24 and i love the Top Gun album, one of the all time classics in anyones language,it is still popular to this day ,i think Ratt might have missed out on a big fish if that is the case
True but Point Break is a much cooler film than Top Gun and it's a testament to their coolness, that Ratt's last single be on an awesome action movie that a guy can be proud of liking. ;)
Also, you have to wonder whether Ratt would have got that much attention had they be featured on Top Gun. It could be argued that it might not have amounted to an alternate music video (like was the case in Golden Child) but just to a 20 second sound byte where the music is overwhelmed by the dialogue.
at the end of the day top gun is one of the most listened soundtracks, point brek isnt hence Ratt missed out on alot popularity which is ashame because no one hardly knows Ratt for the last 15 years from the new school
"Lay it down" has probably the best opening guitar riff I've ever heard. Wanted Man" is pretty good too.
If you're a dude you really owe it to yourself to see their song "Body Talk" posted by a guy named dynameomite. It has Playboys playmate of the year prancing around in it. She's Smoking hot!
I recommend the EP which contains the original version of Back For More and (depending on which version of the EP you have) You're In Trouble (which sounds more grungier).
The EP contains killer tracks: You Think You're Tough, U Got It, Sweet Cheater and Tell The World.
I recommend She Wants Money, The Morning After, Chain Reaction, City to City, Borrowed Time, Hard Time, Top Secret, Can't Wait on Love, Take A Chance, It Doesn't Matter, Drive Me Crazy, Bottom Line and Scene of the Crime.
In my humble opinion, the song SHE WANTS MONEY, off the first album, is one of the best Ratt songs and, I believe, one of the best hard rock songs of all time. You hear that song and you feel so full of energy, and want to get the fuck out and head to the highway with a convertible with that song soaring up!
It's hard to pick my favorite song so here's a list:
U Got It, You Think You're Tough, Scene of the Crime, In Your Direction, She Wants Money, Lay it Down, Closer to my Heart, You Should Know By Now, Between the Eyes, Dangerous but Worth the Risk, Body Talk, 7th Avenue, Slip of the Lip, Take a Chance, Enough is Enough, I Want a Woman, What's it Gonna Be, Bottom Line, What I'm After, Chain Reaction, Givin' Yourself Away, Shame, Can't Wait on Love, Nobody Rides for Free, Every Time I See You.
Stephen probably is pissed because he never had the success on Bon Jovi or other hair bands. Plus he definately doesn't have the looks of other lead singers. I was very unimpressed when I met him...we were there to see W.A.S.P. anyway.
Tell us about your experience with W.A.S.P. and Pearcy. :D
Since we're on a semi-movie pseudo-message board, it's nice to point out that Blackie Lawless was going to be the villain for a rock & roll-related action movie, Terminator 2.
Imagine how big W.A.S.P. would have been from that. :-) :-D
Mean Man is my favourite song of theirs and I think it's better than Born to be Wild.
Anyway, Pearcy must have felt jealous when his band Arcade were opening up for Bon Jovi than vice versa. :)
Juan disliked Ste very much because of his attitude.
When RATT were recording Detonator and Jon Bon Jovi came over to supply guest vocals, Pearcy was giving him a hard time* (much to the chagrin of Juan).
Even kind-hearted Robbin was dismayed by the way Ste would have a condescending stance towards other singers.
i would have to say that nah, this song doesnt beat GNR. dont get me wrong, this song is da shizzz but it wasnt as crunk as Terminator 2 and GNR. which do u like?
Even though I like both songs equally, it makes me wonder what would have happened to the career of both bands if RATT's song was used for Terminator 2 (RATT's song is more relevant to the film than Point Break) and if GNR's song was used for Point Break (which was more relevant to that one given the romantic overtones implied in You Could Be Mine).
I KNOW I drank heavily back in the day, but I never knew til now there was a video to this song. AMPS me up everytime I hear this song, and the movie was a kickass ride too! fsvin, thank you for posting!
Not to get into a different discussion as you have going here, just a notation I wanted to say! I like the way the band playing & clips from the movie were combined! Thank you Bethany, for the reminder that NOBODY RIDES FOR FREE!!!!!!
The same year when Van Halen, Queen, Metallica, Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Skid Row, Pearl Jam, Armored Saint, Motörhead, Soundgarden, Ozzy, Savatage, Hole, Sepultura, Primus, Smashing Pumpkins, Prong and Dark Angel released kick-ass albums.
Also, the same year when Motley Crue, Megadeth, Anthrax and Faith No More released cooler-than-thou singles too.
Screw it, that's it! I'm growing a rat tail. Or maybe a rat tail dangling from my fresh mullet. And maybe even phase in a pompadour. I'll call it - a Ratmulladour! There was only one 80's decade, and some thank God for that.
For those people who weren't of club age back in the 80's during the Hair Band craze, you have no idea what you missed. The music jammed, the beer flowed, the herb burned, and all the girls wore spandax and tiny mini shirts with 5" heels.
Damn I miss those days, glad I got mine back then.
Even though a lot of people like to take the piss out of bands labeled as hair or glam metal, Ratt had riffs that made mince meat of their peers (PARTICULARLY Motley Crue) and certainly ones that rivaled Metallica.
Some of the most memorable guitar solos in the '80s were at the hands of Mr. DeMartini.
Even their UK equivalent, Def Leppard, couldn't compare.
They could have been really, really big except for a couple things...Bad maketing at crucial times, and the bass player acted totally spastic. Pirowets, spins, shakin his ass, common man, thats just gay.
I think the problem with Ratt is that some of their music videos could have been better and they never capitalized on the right singles.
Juan (the bass player) was no less responsible for Ratt's success than the others. He wrote a few of the guitar riffs, wrote a lot of the lyrics and was ultimately key to the renowned "Ratt & Roll" groove*.
* The key to their success was really their rhythm section even though plenty like to focus on the twin lead guitaring and Stephen's trademark voice.
Damn and I thought I knew alot about Ratt, Im beggining to think this is Juan or somebody close to the band because of all the comments i see you leaving on their videos
I always thought that Stephens's voice sounds like Axel Rose but better.
I love Ratt though, i think there image should have been a bit more genuine though. Just a bit too glam for me, i believe thought that this is one of the best rock songs ever.
Placebo's Brian Moloko will always conjure up imagery whenever I hear Pearcy's voice.
In regards to Ratt's image, even Pantera are guilty of the glam metal phase (their pop metal songs were no better than Ratt's).
Which reminds me...had Robbin and Juan succeeded in their attempt at making Detonator like the EP, it would have been later described as a cross between Pantera and Placebo (i.e. groove metal with Moloko-esque vocals).
My son met Warren's daughter on my-space. My son is an amazing guitar player, and now he has someone that can take him places. The De Martini family is amazing. Props to Warren!!!!!
Yeah, it is but also with the Detonator album they started to have a less glam image.
Their debut EP is also more heavier than this and I think that in the '90s Ratt could have had the success Metallica were enjoying had the other band members (and management) listened to Robbin and Juan's ideas of making Detonator similar to the EP.
This may seem laughable for those people associate Ratt with the likes of what they did after the EP but I do think they could have rivaled Pantera and Nirvana.
Interesting how it was self titled like Metallica's black album and was produced by Bob Rock.
I personally think Nikki should have stuck with the original title (which was an ode to Corabi's tenure within the band), Till Death Do Us Apart.
Nikki said the title was kept as MC to make a point about how Nikki, Tommy and Mick were the driving force instrumentally regardless of who the singer was.
Yeah, I made the name up. I'm very good at rhyming things since I'm a songwriter. My band is B.U.B.S. and our songs can be found at the Song Meanings site, which reminds me...
...there should be more people commenting on Ratt songs on that site.
I think people only bought Metallica records to see how they would fare post-Cliff.
There's a lot of people who think that Justice was the superior album to Puppets even if the production was a little off. Imagine if they had Billy Sheehan. =-) =-D
The reason why Robbin left was due to a lie made on behalf of Ratt's management as can be read if you go to the RC fan site and find the Juan Croucier interview in the words section.
After Rob's vices were getting the best of him and the band, management lied to him about offering him a chance to have a solo career as a hot-shot producer.
They gave him a band to produce a demo for but they didn't get a deal.
He felt Mail Order Brides could have been as big as Nirvana and the other grungers.
I was just answering this guy's question as to whether this was indeed Ratt since their image here is certainly more on the casual side than as usual for them. ;)
in this song, ratt sounds different from ther other songs. the guitar isnt as heavy, stephen sounds different. wen i first saw the vid on vh1 soundtrack channel, i didnt even recognize them until the end wen it said that it was them. mainly cuz ther four piece in this vid. just after robbin left. rip robbin crosby
stephen's voice is a little different and i like u! robin rest in peace, and u were soo damn hot. the others were hot too but u were the hottest! love ya ratt
Great song, decent video. Nice slice of time when Keanu was relevent, Lori Petty was Smokin Hot, Swayze wasn't acting like a gay ballet star, and the boys from the Chili Peppers made a Cool cameo. Add the surfing theme and it's a winner.
Still say the opening guitar riff from Lay it Down is the Best in rock.
Having this song on Point Break sorta makes up for not being able to have a song on the Top Gun soundtrack (in terms of how much fame they would have had) but this film is way cooler and less gay. :) :D
Brilliant song. Could go toe to toe with some of their biggest hits. All the RATT trademarks are displayed here!

This song is for Ratt what Ashes to Ashes is to Faith No More.
You can tell by the titles that the band has reached their zenith but not before going out with a bang.
There's a tragedy behind this in that The Crue and RHCP have amazing careers whereas their superior counterparts, Ratt and FNM, sadly
do not.

JosephKuby 3 years ago
Juan had mentioned that Ratt's downfall was based on communication problems such as an inability to appreciate each other's ideas.
Warren, in the long run, wouldn't let Robbin have too many lead guitar parts and a lot of Juan's ideas were turned down by the others.
He wanted to use wires for a stage performance but, instead, was ignored and had his idea ripped off by the members of Bon Jovi.
Juan and Rob suggested Detonator be a heavier album (in the same vein as the EP) but were ignored.

Damn and I thought I knew alot about Ratt, Im beggining to think this is Juan or somebody close to the band because of all the comments i see you leaving on their videos

well said...
I always thought that Stephens's voice sounds like Axel Rose but better.
I love Ratt though, i think there image should have been a bit more genuine though. Just a bit too glam for me, i believe thought that this is one of the best rock songs ever.
Just such a cool rythym solo, vocals, lyrics..
just ace
Thegeezerjk 3 years ago
Agreed. :)
Placebo's Brian Moloko will always conjure up imagery whenever I hear Pearcy's voice.
In regards to Ratt's image, even Pantera are guilty of the glam metal phase (their pop metal songs were no better than Ratt's).
Which reminds me...had Robbin and Juan succeeded in their attempt at making Detonator like the EP, it would have been later described as a cross between Pantera and Placebo (i.e. groove metal with Moloko-esque vocals).

is this a 90s ratt? they seem less glam..
Steve92crue 3 years ago
Yeah, it is but also with the Detonator album they started to have a less glam image.
Their debut EP is also more heavier than this and I think that in the '90s Ratt could have had the success Metallica were enjoying had the other band members (and management) listened to Robbin and Juan's ideas of making Detonator similar to the EP.
This may seem laughable for those people associate Ratt with the likes of what they did after the EP but I do think they could have rivaled Pantera and Nirvana.
JosephKuby 3 years ago
oh no doubt. i always said id motley crue had changed their name when they were with john corabi, they would have been massive.
i guess thats why robbin left ratt then...
Steve92crue 3 years ago
Yeah, that self-titled LP was strangely ignored.
MC should have been called Razorblade Renegade.
JosephKuby 3 years ago
whered razorblade renegade come from! nice name if u made it up haha.
yeh, i dunno why anyone bought any metallica records after cliff died. and justice was ok, but everything after that was pure garbage
Steve92crue 3 years ago
Yeah, I made the name up. I'm very good at rhyming things since I'm a songwriter. My band is B.U.B.S. and our songs can be found at the Song Meanings site, which reminds me...
...there should be more people commenting on Ratt songs on that site.
I think people only bought Metallica records to see how they would fare post-Cliff.
There's a lot of people who think that Justice was the superior album to Puppets even if the production was a little off. Imagine if they had Billy Sheehan. =-) =-D
JosephKuby 3 years ago
no way, billy sheehan is fucking gay.
metallica would never let him in. even though kill em all and ride the lightning are the only studio albums i listen too
Steve92crue 3 years ago
Exactly. ;)
It would have been funny though knowing that he had done all those colorful videos with David Lee Roth! :d :q :P :b
But what if Kirk was the one who died and they sought out Steve Vai? (who had also been dressed in colorful clothing for David Lee Roth's glam band)
But then again, Joe Satriani was Kirk's mentor so they would have got him. Very amusing. =-)
Back to Billy, I think he'd have something to say about the lack of bass on Justice and a lot of today's metal albums. =-D
JosephKuby 3 years ago
The reason why Robbin left was due to a lie made on behalf of Ratt's management as can be read if you go to the RC fan site and find the Juan Croucier interview in the words section.
After Rob's vices were getting the best of him and the band, management lied to him about offering him a chance to have a solo career as a hot-shot producer.
They gave him a band to produce a demo for but they didn't get a deal.
He felt Mail Order Brides could have been as big as Nirvana and the other grungers.

Not on Detonator, was on Ratt N Roll.

I was just answering this guy's question as to whether this was indeed Ratt since their image here is certainly more on the casual side than as usual for them. ;)

Robbin would have looked beyond cool.
Having this song on Point Break sorta makes up for not being able to have a song on the Top Gun soundtrack (in terms of how much fame they would have had) but this film is way cooler and less gay. :) :D
