  • How is it that he did not get more applause than that? I've seen some phenomenal Henriks and this guy holds his own to each of them.

  • He is absolutely the best Henrik I've seen! I just wish he'd have spoke sang a little bit more of the 8th-note phrases at the beginning, and concentrated on the acting side of things more than the singing when he didn't have to. But DAMN he's amazing.

  • He's fabulous and he's doing a great job playing "air cello." I had to look very carefully, but there are places where the cello is playing and he is not bowing. His plucking doesn't quite match- but really, the big picture is great, He has an awesome voice and really, nobody should expect him to play cello for real and sing at the same time. That's nuts.

  • This man would make Sondheim so proud.

  • I've never seen this song performed with such convincing cello playing. Is he actually playing?

Incredible voice by the way :)

  • Well done! Your friend is very talented :)

  • it's actually not a high A, it's a high B... either way, it sounds beautiful

  • I love your rendition of Henrik Josh Young, and you inspired me to sing this for my masters in Musical Theatre audition coming up, and to the person who said that the High A was terrible, what High A. there was a g# but the high note that he held was not an A it was a High B natural which is amazing....

  • WOW. Fabulous.

  • I don't normally take the time to comment on videos...but this is SO impressive that I just wanted to take a minute to say so. Most cannot do this song without going to a falsetto. And to sing with such conviction and power while playing the cello at the same time....wow.

  • Holy cow. That was phenomenal. What a rich, gorgeous voice.

  • wow. that was amazing. sincerely, amazing. thank you for sharing this. wow

  • im strait and im pretty sure i got a boner when he hits that high note

  • @daarenshaw33 Dude I know, right?

  • jawdropping!

  • Finally someone actually playing Henrik, not just singing a song

  • ..genius...

  • wow.

  • he could put that idiot ryan herdlicka to shame. this guy should be on broadway!!

  • Truly amazing. I can't stop watching this....

  • That was an amazing B!!! Congrats!

  • This is amazing. What a voice. I'm deeply impressed and blissfully glad.

  • Amazing job. I'm basically wordless on how to describe my feelings, but they're good going towards envy. xD

  • Simply put, he is wonderful.

  • Wow. This is a wickedly difficult balance of singing and acting and this young man really pulls it off beautifully. Far better than the recent B'way performance which I saw last fall.

  • better than the original cast album. Bravo.

(impressive and effective that he didn't have to go into falsetto.)

  • was he actually playing the cello?

  • @snowboredxray No, but he did good job acting like he was.

  • wow what an amazing voice!!!

  • Wow. Where was this performed?

  • Marvellous!

  • That high A was terrible...

    Except the exact opposite.

This is the part where I give a standing ovation. Ready go.

    Amazing.

  • @apolloxx88 I lied... It's a B... all other information can be recycled... now.

  • @apolloxx88 thats an high B ;)

  • @apolloxx88 It's actually a high B. It was very spread but still good for what it was. I'm loving this performance. You will rarely find someone who can sing and play this piece. The voice is very nice. Broadway like but not too Broadway-ish to sing Sondheim. When singing Sondheim, once must understand that he is the bridge between musical theatre and opera. Very good job.

  • @apolloxx88 He's actually singing a high B! :)

  • amazing

  • definitely a belt, its not a matter of volume its the color, you can tell its not a falsetto even though it is pretty throaty. i always cross my fingers waiting for that B when listening to this song, wondering are they gonna go for the belt. A lot of people who do end up sounding too shouty (thus painful) or too "classical" (losing the teenage angsty quality to this song) this is guy is one of few ive heard who can actually reach note ful voice safetly but keep that emotional gritty angst in it

  • dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

    WHAT?!?!?!?!?!? AMAZING.

gah i love this show. and this role. and this song.

and he is INCREDIBLE. goodness <3

  • You are SOOO late on the band wagon. Get with it Bort. And if you love this show why haven't you done "The Miller's Son"? Hmmm.?? Get on it Bort.

  • He is the best Henrik I have ever heard, absolutely phenomenal!

  • Amazing...

  • I saw this production in Baltimore, the whole show was unbelievable.

  • Wow Im so priviledged to be in Les Mis with him right now he is playing Marius and he is FANTASTIC!!!!

the show is playing at The Fulton Opera House in Lancaster PA if you want to come see it hurry up its our last weekend tickets range from 20-50 bucks its a great show great cast and featuring this guys AMAZINGLY SUPERB talent hope to see you there!

  • O.O Did he hit a high B full voice? Is this natural?? I'm so confused and impressed at the same time. And it really looks like he's playing cello too. Bravo!

  • If you learn how to relax your neck muscles when singing you can push more air through while singing falsetto. It supports the note more and gives you the illusion of a full voice note. He just has very good technique.

  • ummm im sorry but yes this is a belt. there is no illusion here.

  • so beautiful. reminds me people can do beautiful things. so glad. thank you. bravo.

  • What is really amazing, beside the beauty of the voice, the dark timbre and flawless high notes, is how WELL he conveys the TEXT! Clear as a bell, and each word with is acted through. The best. Simply the best.

  • HOLY!! OmidearsweetLord that was unbelievable! He managed to hold the "God"! Woah. Do you have the rest of the show??? And where was this?

  • This is the BEST!! My favorite part is "Gawdddd...sake"

  • OH SNAP. This guy is fantastic! =O

  • Oh my goodness me... this really is superb, isn't it?

  • OH good heavens....i'm having a heart attack, i think. i was debating whether or not to buy his cd, but i'm going to go get it right now.

  • wait.. Josh Young? Does he have a CD out.. because I bought a CD of a Josh Young a few years ago.. There's a west side story medley at the end.. I realize now this sounds like him too... is it the same guy?

  • oh my JESUS. SUCHHHHH beauty. FUCK.

  • OOOOOOHHHHH lovely

  • Great voice!!

  • is he actually playing the cello?

  • no, but he's really good at faking it.

  • I wish there was an Mp3 or something of him singing this. It's absolutely amazing.

  • He don't play the cello here

  • WOW THAT WAS AMAIZING!!! that B was so LEGIT!!! great voice!

  • oh my goodness that voice! he is THE VOICE! amazing!! and playing the cello at the same time, talent talent talent

  • This video is so much better than his west side story videos, its not even funny. AMAZING.

  • amazing voice. you are extremely talented.

  • Damn... very good. I would have loved to see the part with the maid that is one of the funniest parts of the show.

  • wow, he is amazing! i haven't heard voice like that!

  • omg. marry me. <3

  • I've listened to tons of versions of this song, you my friend HAVE the voice. I could marry based on these vocal chords...

  • wow...that was incredible

  • Josh , do you have anything from Les Mis you can post ? I mean this was such a stellar role you did at Walnut , no one can top it ever / I will always be priveleged to know you and your family .Maybe you should be a movie star between shows ..... no one is more handsome than you

  • holy CRAP. the most amazing rendition of this beautiful song i have ever heard. great job!

  • and by the way, retouching on this video...i didnt realize this was Josh Young until now.

I am a huge fan of his, I have his album. =] YAY!

  • nice voice!! very josh groban. though i would like to see the character played a little more.. abused. and frail

  • This is absolutely AMAZING. Is he a professional singer/actor?

  • yeah...his name is Josh Young...he went to syracuse for musical theater :)

  • oh my gosh. what a phenomenal voice! heh, this proves that you can be a bass-baritone, and sing higher than tenors...

    fantastic

  • WHAT? There is nothing Bass-Baritone about that voice. Is that a sustained Bb or B natural on "God"-- I don't have the score here...

That is a tenor sound, for sure

  • what? voice part is determined by tonality and to a degree by range. yes it's a B natural. and it's in my rep, and i'm a bass-baritone for sure...just because a guy can sing up to a b doesn't automatically make him a tenor. look in to opera rep. most of baritones in opera can sing that high...

    still he's fierce

  • It's a B

  • B natural

  • THIS IS AMAZING

  • marry me please?

  • My god, he's absolutely amazing. I'm going to listen to this non-stop.

  • no he's not actually playing the cello, it's just part of the scene, but that doesn't make him any less amazing. i have to say though, he is one of the better fake cello players i've seen (being a cellist and a singer myself)

  • O.M.G.

He plays the cello? Wow. I also saw him at Walnut St. and he was absolutely incredible. Best Marius I've seen or heard. And now I learn he plays the cello. My respect and wonder for Josh just went up. If that's possible.

    Truly beautiful!

  • Well if he plays the cello, it is not up there. Although he is rather good at feigning it, he kindof messes up at :20-:25.

  • Very, very, very good!

  • Dude...I've got to admit I stumbled across this clip about 2 months ago and can't go a week without watching it since.

I have done a fair amount of professional acting even though I am not a singer. I tend to be a harsh critic of most things theatrical...but you are fantastic. I sincerely hope you are constantly employed. It would be a shame to see that much talent go to waste.

Just don't get a big head about it:)

  • this is insanely fantastic, I didn't like this song until I heard your rendition, and now I have watced it five or six times

  • I love this show. This is a really brilliant performance!

  • Oh god, his voice is amazing. It has a certain " Make you melt" quality. Ah. So beautiful. You have no idea how happy I am to find this video.

  • Your voice is indescribable. The high notes are so glorious and well placed. I love that you have the warm, rich timbre of a baritone but a lyric tenor range. How rare and lucky you are. Congrats!

P.S. I also saw you in Les Mis when I was 14 have been following your career since. You are awesome :)

  • Oh my god. that took my breath away.

  • bravo!

  • AWESOME.

  • He's a wonderful actor and singer. He's currently playing Marius at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia and he's wonderful.

  • This is good.

  • now that's how it's done. very nice. I'm glad you posted this or I would not have know about your very talented friend.

  • I saw this production at CenterStage. Even with all the Broadway veterans in the cast, it was Mr. Young's performance that made the greatest impression. He was just terrific as Henrik.

  • josh's cd is on itunes. hes fabulous buy the cd

  • What a voice. Tell your friend he is remarkable although I'm sure he already knows. Did he actually learn to play the cello for that role?

  • his voice is incredible. i'm so impressed. this is a wonderful performance.

  • Yeah, his range is astounding, and yet his voice remains so deep. beautiful

  • It's weird to hear a baritone timbre with a tenor range. GORG!

  • To be honest, if I'm listening to a tenor, I want him to have a baritone timbre! I'm really not a fan of tenors, but if they have a very dark quality, I'm game.

  • I saw him perform at CenterStage in Baltimore a couple weeks ago. I had never seen him before (and never saw this show before), but both his voice and his portrayal of the role blew me away. I suppose it's difficult to judge from just a clip, but rest assured he had that vulnerability thing down pat. I'd love to have his voice and acting ability.

  • He's certainly talented. Lacking the vulnerability I'd like to see in the role. He's too confident and too-singy with it for my personal tastes, but there's no denying he's got a great voice.

  • I'm gonna guess you didn't see the show... am I right? Just cause of the vulnerability comment. Did you see it? Or are you basing his portrayal of Henrik solely on this song?

  • I'm basing it just off of this clip which may be unfair. But if you want people to judge his full performance they need the opportunity to see his full performance. Otherwise they're gonna have to go off of what's available to them.

  • i saw him on saturday and he is INCREDIBLE! He is probably one of the most talented performers I have ever seen. Well done!

  • I saw him in previews and agree 100%. He is an amazing actor and an absurd singer. I've seen five productions of Night Music including the Kennedy Center, Josh is far and away the most perfect portrayal of Henrik and I don't think there is anyone who has such depth with a voice like that. I'm going to go all the way to philly to see Hugh Panaro and him in Les Miz, the two of them combined may kill me :)

  • WOW!!! That was incredible!!! Bravo!!!! That was amazing!!!

  • Amazing voice, perfect diction , breathing ,phrasing...God im soooo jealous (in a good way) ....Amazing secure and gorgeous top B ...Wow ....You will sooooooooooo go far

  • I'm so glad you recorded this

  • i loved his character and his playing!

  • the show was amazing.. some of the best work iv ever seen!! iv seen soo many plays but this is in my top 5 :)

  • That was outstanding.

  • Good LORD Josh. And I got to see all that in the "before" stage. :)

    AMAZING as always. :)

  • Do you have any more from this production?

  • christ that's a good high B

  • I saw the show the other night... it was absolutely amazing. Young's voice is truly phenomenal...one of those hair raising voices u dont soon forget. I wont be surprised if this kid wins a tony someday soon! Does anyone know what else hes been in? I hope to see more of this talented "young" star.

  • LOL...wow, Um, I'd like to thank my mom or agent for creating a youtube account just to write that about me :)haha...but if it was someone else.... really, thanks so much and from your mouth to g-d's ears. Please spread the word about this production that's still running in Baltimore till the 13 of April.. it really is a special show and incredible cast.
