He is absolutely the best Henrik I've seen! I just wish he'd have spoke sang a little bit more of the 8th-note phrases at the beginning, and concentrated on the acting side of things more than the singing when he didn't have to. But DAMN he's amazing.
He's fabulous and he's doing a great job playing "air cello." I had to look very carefully, but there are places where the cello is playing and he is not bowing. His plucking doesn't quite match- but really, the big picture is great, He has an awesome voice and really, nobody should expect him to play cello for real and sing at the same time. That's nuts.
I love your rendition of Henrik Josh Young, and you inspired me to sing this for my masters in Musical Theatre audition coming up, and to the person who said that the High A was terrible, what High A. there was a g# but the high note that he held was not an A it was a High B natural which is amazing....
I don't normally take the time to comment on videos...but this is SO impressive that I just wanted to take a minute to say so. Most cannot do this song without going to a falsetto. And to sing with such conviction and power while playing the cello at the same time....wow.
his voice is wonderful, but i would have hoped he would have worked at the imitation cello playing a little more, so that it didn't look like he was trying so hard to sing pretty, but more so that he was feeling the whole song with his whole being. As a musician it pains me to see that he's off with what's actually being played. i mean it would be so simple as spending a day, few hours even, sitting side by side with the cellist and following his movements
Wow. This is a wickedly difficult balance of singing and acting and this young man really pulls it off beautifully. Far better than the recent B'way performance which I saw last fall.
@apolloxx88 It's actually a high B. It was very spread but still good for what it was. I'm loving this performance. You will rarely find someone who can sing and play this piece. The voice is very nice. Broadway like but not too Broadway-ish to sing Sondheim. When singing Sondheim, once must understand that he is the bridge between musical theatre and opera. Very good job.
definitely a belt, its not a matter of volume its the color, you can tell its not a falsetto even though it is pretty throaty. i always cross my fingers waiting for that B when listening to this song, wondering are they gonna go for the belt. A lot of people who do end up sounding too shouty (thus painful) or too "classical" (losing the teenage angsty quality to this song) this is guy is one of few ive heard who can actually reach note ful voice safetly but keep that emotional gritty angst in it
Wow Im so priviledged to be in Les Mis with him right now he is playing Marius and he is FANTASTIC!!!!
the show is playing at The Fulton Opera House in Lancaster PA if you want to come see it hurry up its our last weekend tickets range from 20-50 bucks its a great show great cast and featuring this guys AMAZINGLY SUPERB talent hope to see you there!
O.O Did he hit a high B full voice? Is this natural?? I'm so confused and impressed at the same time. And it really looks like he's playing cello too. Bravo!
If you learn how to relax your neck muscles when singing you can push more air through while singing falsetto. It supports the note more and gives you the illusion of a full voice note. He just has very good technique.
What is really amazing, beside the beauty of the voice, the dark timbre and flawless high notes, is how WELL he conveys the TEXT! Clear as a bell, and each word with is acted through. The best. Simply the best.
wait.. Josh Young? Does he have a CD out.. because I bought a CD of a Josh Young a few years ago.. There's a west side story medley at the end.. I realize now this sounds like him too... is it the same guy?
Josh , do you have anything from Les Mis you can post ? I mean this was such a stellar role you did at Walnut , no one can top it ever / I will always be priveleged to know you and your family .Maybe you should be a movie star between shows ..... no one is more handsome than you
what? voice part is determined by tonality and to a degree by range. yes it's a B natural. and it's in my rep, and i'm a bass-baritone for sure...just because a guy can sing up to a b doesn't automatically make him a tenor. look in to opera rep. most of baritones in opera can sing that high...
no he's not actually playing the cello, it's just part of the scene, but that doesn't make him any less amazing. i have to say though, he is one of the better fake cello players i've seen (being a cellist and a singer myself)
He plays the cello? Wow. I also saw him at Walnut St. and he was absolutely incredible. Best Marius I've seen or heard. And now I learn he plays the cello. My respect and wonder for Josh just went up. If that's possible.
Dude...I've got to admit I stumbled across this clip about 2 months ago and can't go a week without watching it since.
I have done a fair amount of professional acting even though I am not a singer. I tend to be a harsh critic of most things theatrical...but you are fantastic. I sincerely hope you are constantly employed. It would be a shame to see that much talent go to waste.
Your voice is indescribable. The high notes are so glorious and well placed. I love that you have the warm, rich timbre of a baritone but a lyric tenor range. How rare and lucky you are. Congrats!
P.S. I also saw you in Les Mis when I was 14 have been following your career since. You are awesome :)
I saw this production at CenterStage. Even with all the Broadway veterans in the cast, it was Mr. Young's performance that made the greatest impression. He was just terrific as Henrik.
To be honest, if I'm listening to a tenor, I want him to have a baritone timbre! I'm really not a fan of tenors, but if they have a very dark quality, I'm game.
I saw him perform at CenterStage in Baltimore a couple weeks ago. I had never seen him before (and never saw this show before), but both his voice and his portrayal of the role blew me away. I suppose it's difficult to judge from just a clip, but rest assured he had that vulnerability thing down pat. I'd love to have his voice and acting ability.
He's certainly talented. Lacking the vulnerability I'd like to see in the role. He's too confident and too-singy with it for my personal tastes, but there's no denying he's got a great voice.
I'm gonna guess you didn't see the show... am I right? Just cause of the vulnerability comment. Did you see it? Or are you basing his portrayal of Henrik solely on this song?
I'm basing it just off of this clip which may be unfair. But if you want people to judge his full performance they need the opportunity to see his full performance. Otherwise they're gonna have to go off of what's available to them.
I saw him in previews and agree 100%. He is an amazing actor and an absurd singer. I've seen five productions of Night Music including the Kennedy Center, Josh is far and away the most perfect portrayal of Henrik and I don't think there is anyone who has such depth with a voice like that. I'm going to go all the way to philly to see Hugh Panaro and him in Les Miz, the two of them combined may kill me :)
Amazing voice, perfect diction , breathing ,phrasing...God im soooo jealous (in a good way) ....Amazing secure and gorgeous top B ...Wow ....You will sooooooooooo go far
I saw the show the other night... it was absolutely amazing. Young's voice is truly phenomenal...one of those hair raising voices u dont soon forget. I wont be surprised if this kid wins a tony someday soon! Does anyone know what else hes been in? I hope to see more of this talented "young" star.
