I owe a lot to western culture in the ways it has enriched my life and I always hate those moments when I need to point out such negative parts. Coming from a culture that doesn't give voice to powerless people, I cannot count the disappointments the western world has given me by not following through its cultural ideals of seeing humans through the lens of individualism and honoring ideas from everyone. Individualism as your words have proven only apply to fellow white people, not to "others."
Also being inside a country and only getting info from the media that you prefer and not listening to real people with real experience, you are never going to learn and keep criticizing those that have other views from you. Bc I am enjoying my American life too, I forget a lot of times, but there are countries and people suffering because of what is tolerated in American culture. If you cannot transcend your own experience and love for your own country, you'll never get in touch with such truth.
Also go back to your fucking anthro class and learn the difference between cultural relativism and moral relativism. It is clear you didn't pay attention to that. Also people who are actually taking that "I'm not going to judge" attitude are being more courageous because the majority-only raised in America-people think like you do. Just because your absolutism preferring puny brain cannot stand a complex worldview, doesn't mean that they are the idiots.
I find your use of language and lack of true understanding of cultural relativism quite barbaric. I cannot believe you are actually in college and thinking that. Anthropology also enables people to look at their own culture from a different angle and recognize its own quirkiness and yes barbaric practices. What we eat, how people are treated in the media, abusing cheap labor in foreign countries to get some nice nike shoes bc a child worked day and night. That's barbaric.
You took a cultural anthropology class right? I'm in the same thing now... its non-stop non-sense and bullshit. Our professor even had her Muslim boyfriend come in and talk to us about how the media has brainwashed us all into hating Islam and to proselytise to us (listened to the Shahada, he invited us to read the Quran).
WOW, fucked up. my class actually wasnt really bullshit, my prof was pretty cool, he didnt push any agenda even though he probably thought more like yours. though i would read the Quran, i did, and now ppl cant talk shit about "being ignorant" of the religion etc etc etc.
@Acennendlic What is so fucked up about that? You need to talk to real people to learn, not just take in what the media says. What does the media say about people like you? Probably very unfair things. Same goes for Muslims. If you heard what foreigners have to say about Americans, you would also be angered at the things that brainwashed them. Even I feel that sometimes when I think about what a twisted picture people abroad have about Americans and I always tell them it isn't so.
