Whats all the hubub? Claymores are a cheaper area denial tool. You cant manpack these as replacment "magazines" are far too heavy and cumbersome to use. If you miss with the first round, the other hundred and odd following will also miss.
Trust me fellas. and lasses. that o'dwyer bloke is from queensland. hes been developing that thing since the late 90s. you prolly saw americans on the doco cos since then the us defence/mitary complex has pumped millions into it.
but yeah good point on the other comments: my prediction is that the odwyers go the way of rupert murdoch and become yanks. and yes the Us will use MS when its refined.
both guns are awesome, why dont they just put both of them together on helicopters? thousands of bullets with hundreds of grenades, the though of that being rapidly fired at you should already make you mess yourself...
miniguns are direct action weapons, I.E, used for attacking, unless i'm mistaken (and i could very well be,) Metal storm technology is being developed for Area denial, for which i personally think its well suited. though im certainly not, and im sure none of you are experts.
the only problem with that system is that it can maintain that fire rate for more than a split second. Minigun on the other hand could be ruining stuff for a much longer before reload. and miniguns look cooler.
The notion of the abscence of moving parts does not ensure a higher reliability than any other system currently in existence. Can the wiring for the device, as the working mechanism is powered by electrical signals to commence firing, be prepared and manufactured in such a way that the wire will not degrade over time, and can it withstand extreme abuse, not to mention keeping the costs of the barrels down, as they are likely to be damaged by such high firing rates.
I hear you. This thing seems like a very "exotic" weapon that may prove to be only of limited usefulness. At the same time, I would hate to be in the line of its fire! I saw a really good use for it on TV where a drone aircraft had this thing on it with downward firing barrels and it will literally be a rain of bullets! Bye bye Muslim! Hah!
As wel as mounted on a-10's. These can be mounted on high altitude aircraft that can strike ground targets with no danger of taking fire. Oh yeah and satilights with some real calibre to them say 88m?
Oh the humanity!
As of right now they are currently mounting them on remote control mini tanks and choppers. Ahhhh the future. :)
WOuld be great for bombardment but they are computer operated right? It'll be useless when their networks were infected with a virus or if they have been dropped with an EMP bomb.
Electronically operated, yes, but who says the laptops are hooked up to a network? I see no network cabling anywhere. So far, Metal Storm isn't meant to be networked at all.
As to an EMP bomb, no ones going to be worrying about metal storm when an emp bomb drops. That would mean all the other more important electronic devices have gone out like radios, navigation, etc etc.
theres no such thing as an emp bomb, you play too much tiberian sun and watch too many movies. the notion that one exists is stupid. you just like trying to disprove the government you stupid conspiracy theorist...dumb fucken fuck. how the fuck do you think of such a dumb fucken idea you stupid ducktard.fuck you. get fucked. fuck off....damn terrorist.
Um, the threat of a virus infecting a gun is the same as any other computer. Its not like a freaking disease or a glitch or... you're just a retard. And an EMP bomb is a nuke. Nothing would work with a nuke dropped on them.
Read mathew reilly novels, they will give you more insight into how this is goiing to change moden warfare. Good aussie boy. I suggest the scarecrow line - Ice station, area, then read about al zaquawi getting blown away by green lit laser scoped hand held version of this
The RoF on this may sound impressive, but by the very nature of the gun, you need to reload after a burst of about a second when going all out. The mirriad of miniguns, on the other hand, have a belt feed that allows you to keep firing straight until the feed runs out. Reloading is much quicker with a belt feed than this too... Still, this is a neat concept, even if it is impractical.
As far as practicality goes. Defence here in Australia and in the US have been looking at the metal storm concept to be used on all sorts of weapons systems. Eg what if you arm say an A10 with a whole bank of these under the wing pylons. It would almost certainly make the GAU12 minigun obselete. Another scenario is use on helicopter gunships. Not only that you have the simplicity of the system where there are no moving parts hence making it a relativy cheap system too.
Yeah the impact would be pretty awesome but have a look at this link. its the first prototype of this weapon system. Shows how the shot impacts a target. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEIMEXjgw9w

and it is designed for area denial as a replacement for mines, because u can shut it off and it becomes mostly harmless

It can fire that much amount, because I think the ammuntion is lined up together, and the electric something triggers it.
