i wish i payed attention in highschool....now im 29 and unemployed, in two months i WILL be going to college and taking every possible class i can on quantum mechanics & physics, this subject is so interesting and amazing to me, i would love to have a career studying this....just goes to show you can never stop learning. i am so impressed with myself that i have taken a shine to something with substance, and not what beyonce's new song is.....its time to wake up america.
So much confusion and debate over words like 'theory' 'fact' 'law' 'atheist' and 'agnostic'. I've seen so many lengthy discussions on these things on the net. Even scientists argue these. I tell you it's amazing we haven't blown ourselves up already. Perhaps one day we will.
Yep, people could see for thousands of years how a stone would fall to the ground is you drop it. It was a fact a stone would do it. And that was nothing compared to the theory of relativity that explained why the stone did fall.
So what is more important? A stone that falls, or the theory that gaves us the atomic bombs and did teach us how stars produce energy!
A scientific theory explain facts and laws. A fact itself is pointless. We can do nothing with a fact. Only a explanation of why is important......and that is what a scientific theory does : )
Dont mix a scientific theory with a philosophical theory, thats a big mistake and they have nothing to do with eachother.
@daarco2 dude since when does theory explain fact? a theory is a theory and a fact is a fact. fact is truth. so if i explain to u factually how the rock does fall i dont need theory. theory comes before fact it doesnt explain fact thats just ridiculous. and what the hell?? facts arent important? it boggles the mind that u dont seem to understand the difference. go find a dictionary and look up Fact and Theory
A scientific theory contain all facts and laws. A scientific theory explain the facts and laws.
Dont confuse a scientific theory, with a philosophical theory.
Example: The one i said. With a fact you can do nothing, with the theory about the fact we could do the atom bomb. Or the Atom theory made us build computers, not the fact atoms exist.
And please try and understand that this is not a bad thing. It is the courner stone of our civilization : )
@koorgen Also, the theory of evolution by natural selection doesn't say that everything came from nothing. You'd know this if you read a book or article on it!
It says that a species evolves over time by a process of natural selection; or 'survival of the fittest'. I can't explain it all here because of a character limit but it can explained by a single page, such as the Wikipedia one, i suggest you read it.
@koorgen You obviously don't understand the context of the word theory in science; it's different to the everyday meaning.
When a scientist says the word 'theory' he/she means something like: 'a hypothesis that is built on a large body of ever-increasing and evermore reliable evidence" This is quite a different meaning from a guy on the street telling you about his 'theory' on something.
The only reason scientists don't call their theories facts is because they're not arrogant enough!
@kfsdjfdkbskefygeygbf or maybe they dont call their theories facts because they cant conclusively prove them....i mean i believe in evolution and theres a whole lot of evidence supporting it but theres also a whole lot missing. so it would be wrong to call something fact that hasnt been proven without a doubt to be true.
@nizzim Nothing, I repeat, nothing can be conclusively proved. Think about that one. It's not immediately obvious so If you don't agree then do some research on the internet (just a few pages should suffice).
Once over this easy hurdle, you can begin to realise (and you've said it yourself without realising it) that absolutely nothing can be called scientific "fact".
Therefore, the correct way to go about science is to call everything a "theory".
how come he said we will never see an atom but we are able to form the word IBM in francium atoms using an electron microscope. science evolves every day and evolution is not fact if we cant prove it can it
In my video Quantum Mechanics an artist view Time has the symmetry and geometry of spacetime. Could this give us General Relativity and explain entanglement?
Everything in the universe including people are all manifesting from some ethereal vibrating wave(s). The idea of free will doesn't seem very much of a plausible argument at this point.
It arguably seems more plausible than it did in Newton's day.
You've heard of Laplace's Demon, right?
Basically, it's something with perfect knowledge of the position and velocity of every particle in the universe at a particular moment. From this starting point, it could calculate everything else that ever had or would happen, using Newtonian physics.
...That doesn't work anymore now that we've got a system based on probability!

@kfsdjfdkbskefygeygbf This is absolutely fine, as long as you know exactly what "theory" means (read my original comment again!).

@fatqwert200 you cant see an atom with the unaided eye. theyre probably using a scanning tunneling electron microscope.
