  • aikido= front flip yay =D -_-'''

  • i hate aikido but i like kendo

  • Akido seems to be very useful if someone is trying to shake your hand or karate chop you.

  • @shubroto81 or choke you or disarm you or punch you or grapple you or kick you or slap you or kill you

  • @AlaskanAssassin87 I don't know about punch you or kick you, but yes everything else.

  • i have mastered the way of the pirate......a butt pirate

  • Anybody else burst out laughing at 4:20?

  • @UndercoverCracker Chances are that those "old ladies" would royally kick your ass. Show a little respect.

  • Those are old ladies not young girls..

  • @UndercoverCracker these ladie's probably know more about trad MA than even many of the men back then!"

  • is meaningless without a graduated system

  • Ive always thought akido looked like it probably wouldnt work but the way there practising from 3:50 to 4:20 it looks effective.

  • @charliemurphyslaw 呃~~If done properly, Aikido is really effective. This is why it's their number one self-defense method learned in Japan.

  • @GaolisVideoLog im pretty sure thats judo. Not akido thats most popular in japan.

  • @charliemurphyslaw Ah~~~ I was told otherwise. ^_^ But I can't prove it. So, if you say so~~~

  • i'm japanese and i must say asian martial arts are mostly logic only and not effective to real combat. aikido, kendo, taekwondo, kunfu, etc suck. it is the 21c now! it's illegal to use gun and sword. so now karate and judo are the best, i think.

  • Any art form is effective, if you have the mind for it. its the budo aspect that should make an art effective. You have to have the mentality for it.

  • Couldn't help but chuckle at the title, I happen to have begun training in both Aikido and kendo this semester. Very nice vid, very informative. Thanks for the upload.

  • 5 stars

  • 3:39 - oh no! watch out for that pervert with a dildo!

  • Your real Aikido is not Aikido..

  • It looks crappy because they're doing it against people who are resisting. Things start to look ugly when the other guy's fighting back.

  • 1970's

kungfu films were also crappy then :D

so dont expect too much lol

  • @backstabingliar Your comment is so disrespectful but it is so funny too. LOL :D

  • @backstabingliar

As funny as it may seem, the weapon is from taihojutsu

another Art that police force must learn.

    search in youtube : 逮捕術大会の様子-岐阜アリーナ

  • Holy smokes Larry, beside the modest hair loss you look the same! That beard has a long history! It is great to see the younger version of you and get a peek into your past!

  • besides, who saids thats aikido is just wrist locks?? ther are a looooot of moves on aikido, from wrist locks to arm locks, arm, elbows, shoulders, neck even legs, there are a lot of techniques, not to mention trwoings an take downs

  • "ou will never get a single lock on a real fighter. "That's funny. Youtube is full of videos of aikido principles being applied in MMA bouts, xo that argument doesn't work. And given that these very principles are derived from those developed by samurai over a thousand years of history, I suppose that next I'll be told that samurai weren't really warriors but were actually artists. Riot police forces all over the world are trained in aikido, obviously they know something Mr.Warren has overlooked

  • MichaelJ, I think it's perhaps a little unfair to say "All aikido only works with a compliant subject". There's a lot of aikido going around that is soft, and neutered - Health and Safety. I have the privilege to learn from an 8th Dan, with qualifications in judo and karate as well, who used aikido, in his own words, "to kill Japanese". He's ex-SBS. A lot of the techniques he shows us, he is careful to say "This is NOT the aikido most modern dojos would teach.". Properly applied Kote Gaeshi?

  • JIU-JITSU

    that is all.

  • ... the teacher, but he quickly found out he could not when a muscle in his arm snapped and he immediately had to go to hospital. He had ignored the arm bar and injured himself while trying to turn towards the teacher.

  • I do think that people who are used to fullcontact sparring have an advantage over many aikidoka because they know what it's like to be hit whereas the aikidoka provided he has never practised another martial art, is not used to being hit since they don't practise it. But that doesn't mean they would crumble and cry in agony when they do get hit. Best example of aikido's effectiveness, last week a teacher applied an arm bar on a student, the man thought he still had the possiblity to punch..

  • I think the most important thing is the right state of mind. If you have a "sissy" state of mind I think you're definately going to get your ass kicked. But one of my teachers was a bodyguard and is an instructor at a security company (if I'm not mistaken about the latter) and he always says you should perform aikido with a certain fire in your moves, with a readiness to go straight through your trainingpartner. And the other teachers too stress, you should be decisive in your technique.

  • I think Michaeljwarren has a really hard time accepting the weird techniques in aikido, I've been doing aikido for about 3 years now and I found many moves really weird, unrealistic and impractical yet the more I practise the more I understand the meaning of them and suddenly I realise they aren't that far fetched at all. I must say that my teachers emphasize the martial aspect of aikido and they won't shun a demonstration with more "brutal" moves.

  • Interesting

  • naginata-do is a martial art i tried and its fun but i prefer iaido and kendo... isn't another name for naginata-do shendo kendo?

  • Always same discussion. Aikido is real, aikido is not real... many years and many points of view... useless.

If you like aikido, do aikido.

If you like karate, do karate.

If you want selfdefense, buy a knife

  • You go ahead and carry your gun around. I'll just make sure to never need either.

Just make sure to remember how easily a gun can do the opposite of what it's meant to.

  • A 1000 sword strokes - followed by a good cigar. Les, you're living well, young man, living well.

  • i think you guys should try daito-ryu, the hiddern roots of aikido, and you'll know more...

  • I think the master who do the demostration is a bit "heavy" don't you think?

  • Naginata was traditional weapon on battlefield until sengoku period (1337 -1568) it was then replace by the yokai.Naginata used by women is smaller and is called chitte no naginata, women use these spears in case the castle was breached by invaders

  • So whats so bad with Akido again?

  • Aikido is love, and love is a healing forse on earth.

It is sad that there is more hate then love. And it's more sad that there wil not be love every where for a long time.

    Maybe never.

  • aikido is a non-comepetetive art so would you have an aidkidoka in the Ufc, michaeljwarren?

  • Yes. In short, in saying you know nothing. In doing you understand. To understand a fight, fight. Aikido is not for fighting or combat. It is a beautiful form of moving meditation. Nothing more. It is not about competition. It is about testing oneself and filtering out the B.S.

  • Saying that Aikido is not about fighting is like saying that football has nothing to do with kicking a ball!!!!

  • LMAO, Aikido and fighting are too totally different things. Not related.

It is funny how scared of reality and out of touch with the real world many of you Aikidokas are. get over yourselves. Open your eyes and start training for the real world. Aikido is not a fighting system. it is useless in conflict. It's only use is in meditation. Maybe character development too. It takes some character to think it would ever work in real life. lol

  • Ignorant and irrational. Dangerous combination!! Maybe you've never seen a decent practitioner? I guess when I've used it in real life then I must have been dreaming?? You need to do some research on the history of the art. All the martial arts are about more than just conflict and fighting. Western culture has bastard forms of the Asian arts mostly. Your 'opinion' is totally laughable and contrary to the facts but deceive yourself all you like!!

  • A final point, what's irrational about calling out a false belief when it is so obvious to all others not under it's sway? I have years of training in Aikido, thus removing your ignorant claim and rational is all my argument is. Simply put, show instead claim.

  • I've been doin'aikido for 3 years and I've been able to beat up 4 man at the same time on the street. saying that aikido is useless in real world is like saying how stupid and useless in the real world you are. Open YOUR eyes and try to understand what is all about. Then write coments

  • 4 m3n at once. LMAO. Right. Sure. I'll believe you. LOL

Also, very amusing turn of a phrase. Also as pointless as Aikido for fighting. Next you'll be spining reverse phrases like, "control your anger or it will control you and such. " LMFAO.

Wake up. One experience isn't the norm. Fight for a bit and see if you can hang. I think you will find reality much different from your fantasy world. the only place Aikido works is in the make believe world of movies.

  • A guy who practices aikido with me broke the arm of a guy who attacked him with a knife. My teacher has used aikido countless times to defend himself. Aikido techniques are the core of the techniques used by the british police in restraining. So if u still believe that aikido only works in "the make believe world of movies", i would also urge you to open your eyes before writing coments.

  • Look. You are missing the entire point. It is NOT a fighting system. It is a shadow of what Aikijutsu used to be. The founder, created it as a means of pacifying the warrior spirit in a peaceful "non-fighting" manner. It is like saying, Kendo is sword fighting. It isn't. Aikido is not a system for fighting. Some people's inflated and second-hand claims are not valid. Open your eyes. Police officers use firearms, tazers, and numbers to their advantage. A wrist lock applied is not Aikido. Wake up

  • I'm missing the point? You stated that aikido is useless in conflict, I am stating that is is useful. And you obvioulsy didnt read what I said: the british police aren't armed with firearms or tasers, and my Aikido teacher used to teach at the Hendon Police academy.

  • Yes. You are missing the point. Police officers work in teams and overpower suspects when arresting. I train civilian and military law enforcement. I also train Special Forces soldiers and I can tell you with out a doubt from my first-hand experience, Aikido = useless in a real fight. Aikido was never intended for any kind of fighting. It is a way to pacify the warrior spirit and provide a means of self-refkection. Next thing you'll believe you can catch bullets with you teeth. LMAO.

  • So every time Aikido has worked on the street in the past, it was what... imagined?

  • in the street there are infinite variables to consider. If you were lucky enough to survive it was probably due to other sources beyond Aikido. Let just explain it this way. You would never be able to place a wrist lock on me when I am punching you. the only place for aikido is to supplement a real fighting approach. It will apply to gun disarms if you are close enough and very very lucky.

  • So every time a police man uses the aikido he has been taught it is just a dream?

C'mon... the wrist locks are really useful out there.

I think the whole idea you present is "if I know it's coming"...

Knife assailants with broken wrists etc... it seems it works well on the street.

  • Look, I train law enforcement and Special Forces. Aikido only works with a compliant suspect. Not an aggressive, determined attacker. All of my real world and battlefield experience has proven this true to me. Simply put, I will take a simple shock knife and attack you. You will get shocked and my wrists will remain whole. Bottom line. I can have one of my rookies attack you and the same results will occur. Your life is worth too much to count on something that doesn't really work.

  • Do you have a website Michael? Which police departments and what branches of the military have you contracted with?

  • Just goes to show that you have only scratched the surface of what Aikido is all about. I admit that as you are learning the techniques you use set moves and attacks. As you progress and become more proficient in Aikido you also learn to adapt the techniques based upon new scenarios (i.e. someone trying to push a broken bottle into your face for example). I would suggest you have a look around the internet and youtube for some very good examples of everyday use of Aikido? Paul

  • Actually, it works by making your opponent off balance. Also, it works by suprise. If you're off balance all the time, there's no way you're going to be throwing punches. Because all you'll be trying to do is not fall. Try fighting while on the edge of a cliff. That's what aikido will do.

  • Your dreaming if you think you can actually put a real fighter anywhere but in a position to beat you down if you are relying on Aikido. Show me a single Aikido fighter in the UFC or any other real competition and I will show you a dead person.

  • take a look at "jujitsu vs *" or "aikido vs *"

    and youll get secound thoughts.

jujitsu have a high degree of simularity to aikido, in the way you lock/sweep/throw your opponent. aikido just makes it look more elegant, and stylish.

but in a sence your right, aikido is a sport for "gentlemen" -not for brawlers.

  • That's my point. It is a sport. Not a fighting art. Of course most of the arts today are just sports and will not provide effective results in a life or death confrontation. I would never expect my troops to rely on jiu jitsu or aikido or tae kwon do in a battlefield. They would get killed. It is graceful, pretty, and nice to watch. Then again, so is the ballet. At least the dancers don't pretend ot be combat effective. It fools many students. They mistake confidence for competence.

  • aikido is very efficiant, but take alot af practise to master. it falls in catagory with tai-chi / whu-su, withs teaches the student the basic moves. aikido is an offspring of unarmed counters to melee attacks, the fundamentals of withs origens dates back to the Yoshioka ryu, 300 years befor Morihei Ueshiba was born. and were thought of as being the essencial "first step" on the path to becomming a swordsman.

in present days, the japanese police practise a more modern version, Yoshinkai-aikido.

  • Again, Tai Chi is used in MMA fights. Aikido isn't and can't be used. it is only used for personal awareness. Not a warrior way. Ueshiba went to China and cam e back with Aikido after studying Qi Qong. An internal health system for developing energy. Not fighting.

  • in aikido you don´t just get in a position where your partner takes you down.

you colaborate with him, in order for him to learn a technique. in a real fight, aikido is very useful in order to not get hurt.

i have learnt aikido over ten years now. and only once i had a fight. i used only one technique, my oponent did not colaborte with me, but since i knew what i was doing, i could force him into giving up the fight.

you should leran more about aikido, obviously you don´t know crap about it.

  • You give in and both pretend your combat effective. It is a fictitious envinroment that will never stand in a real confrontation. I agree on one point though. Aikido in a real fight will be useful for at least one person to not get hurt, the guy beating the crap out of the aikido user. I have been in hundereds of fights. In war, Iraq and Afghanistan, in competitions, MMA, NHB, and many street brawls. In a word, experienced. Real experience. For the record, 15 years study of Aikido in 3 Dojos.

  • There's a reason Aikidoka don't practice in tournaments; it not only goes against the premise of Aikido, but it's deadly. My father is former military, like you, and has fought in Afghanistan, and he swears by Aikido. I respect your opinion, but you couldn't be more wrong in claiming that Aikido is not effective in combat. If the attacker is caught, the Aikidoka can easily shatter limbs. It's not meant to be on par with life-or-death military training. But this art is easily deadly.

  • I am glad your father was able to return safely. He never used Aikido in Afghanistan. If he had, he would not be living. I fought there as well. With the 7th Special forces Group in 2003-04. Aikido will not break the bones of a active, resisting opponent. You will never get a single lock on a real fighter. Ever. If you doubt this, go into a tournament, NHB, try. You can talk all you want. I have fought. In saying you know nothing. In doing, you will understand.

  • You must be blissfully ignorant of shodokan aikido then?

  • Male samurai always wore swords openly, and so were trained to do so.Women often were skilled with the Tanto and the Naginata for when necessary.Guards and warrior monks also often used this weapon.

  • What's Naginata?

  • Wiki it and see...

  • kind of a reach weapon like a halberd i think

  • "Show me a single Aikido fighter in the UFC" Small joint manipulation is not allowed in the UFC. Thus aikido is not permitted, there are numerous videos on this very site where its principles are being used in MMA contests to great success. Physics, the principles of which aikido inevitably has its roots, always wins.

  • eny one know ware i can buy a good naginata

  • try ebay lol

  • ......lol thanx alot

  • Go Naginata

  • These guys are so stiff... "Traditional aikido" and "Modern aikido?" Aikido IS modern! He means "Aikido" and "Tomiki aikido," which are two completely different things.

  • Why is it that only women practice Naginata? I wanna try it....

  • No reason why you can't! I've tried it and lots of males do it, especially in North America. It's just "traditionally" a woman's martial art. But in reality samurai used the naginata as much as swords, especially while mounted on horse

  • its because Naginata was an ancient way for women to defend themself..doesnt the tool they are using resemble something...like a broom, perhaps? :D

  • looks more like a halberd to me, but whatever. Also the Samurai and especially Sohei used the Naginata quite extensively.

  • =0 asome, and interesting
