I guess if you find you need that weird angle for ON CAMERA use then go ahead and do that, but if you are shooting light backward it would make way more sense to have it off camera anyway. Use the nikon CLS and get an su-800.
I need an SB-900, so I figured what the hell... It's a lot easier to do than I expected - and it still works perfectly. Bargain. P.S. the SB900 does have 180deg left and right as standard
The stop tab on the inside of the SB800 was put there by design. If you break the stop, turn the flash head to the right 90 degrees, then go beyond 90 degrees to 180, because it can and therefor at some point will. Then you shoot and shoot with it in the 180 position, but forget whether you turned the head right or left to get to the 180 position and accidently turn it right to the forward position, you will tear the wires loose from the head. OOPS! Designers engineered the stop tab for a reason
"I tell you again, DON'T DO IT AT HOME! But I can do it."
Sounds like you're bragging or something. =p But that's great too.
Anyways, thank you for this explanation of your modification of this flash.
Oh, and by the way. The wiring inside that Nikon flash should be just long enough to go around to 180 degrees on the right side as well. I'd guess you got the money to buy a new if the wires snap (which is not likely to happen).
It may sound funny, but I can't take any chance that a whiff, a scent, a thought, or even a smell of the notion that I am condoning this to come across. Taking the head of the flash and killing it like in the old country is NOT something I condone. Remember when your papa told you "do what I say, not what I do" - well that fits in here perfectly :) On the other hand, I can't stop adult folks from doing what they want - as long as they practice "no sex until married", I'm cool :) ~P
Don't do this, ever. I ruined my sb800 this way..

This method WORKS so easily.....no need to open the flash & rish frying yourself on a semi-charged capacitor.
THANKS so much Gregg; the method is so easy & practical; I did it to all my SB-800.

works fine on SB-600, thx Peter!
To avoid wires getting twisted, rotate the head the same way prior to the mod.
pnmd 2 years ago
Yeah it stupid, you can always rotate the flash body. its gonna mess up the wiring

Of course I had to do this to my SB-800. Works. Probably should have spent the time opening it up and investigating it.
