Do you use and external clock. If yes, how well does it work? I have heard it might course som problems with the capacitance in the breadboard.

I have a standalone Arduino on a breadboard too and I just used a 16mhz crystal with 2, 22pF capacitors running from each leg of the crystal to ground.
It works great!
