What strikes me most about David Duckham is how such a tall chap could be so graceful at the same time and as for his acceleration! He really was born to be rugby great.
You think rugby is great nowadays? These were the truly great days. Truly great players. Those welsh boys were magnificent! and the Irish boys. But for me personally, David Duckham was my hero. The best English player Ive ever seen!
Sir David Duckham Isalute you! You were magnificent!
The All Blacks haka and the 1973 Barbarians are the only reasons i watch rugby nowadays. If the game was played the way it was back then, i'd never watch football, but england have rarely selected players like Dave Duckham since. I thought there were some good players on the pitch at the time, but it's only today you realise that virtually the entire welsh hall of fame played in that particular game, as well as duckham.
The 1971 lions backline was even better : Ewards, Barry John, Duckham, Gibson, Dawes, Gerald Davies, Williams. The only British backs of the last 40 years who'd get into that team are Shane Williams and Brian O'Driscoll.
The best English player Ive ever seen! I saw this game on TV. David Duckham was incredible. Not enough said about THE GREAT MAN as far as I am concerned. We should sing his praises a lot more
Amazing game played in the true spirit of Barbarian rugby, including head-high tackles and kicks to the head, where a man was measured not by how many tries he scored but by the size of his sideburns!
Rugby was played much more off the cuff in the early 70s, whereas nowadays it seems like matches are won and lost by the coach and his laptop. Every backline move is pre-planned and carefully rehearsed, while spontanaety and risk taking are frowned upon. The players of the 70s couldn't compete with the superfit, bulked-up, behemoths of today, but at least they gave a lot of people a lot of pleasure along the way.
@ohtheidol Plus, they could slap a scrum together without all the nonsense you see today, and they were a bit more tolerant on mishandling the ball if it was just at your feet and not really batted forward. Today, you bat it forward even one inch...knock on!
The kicking sucks but some of the passing is awesome. The thing I like is that they all look like normal blokes, and not the uber-fit athletes we have today. Also - line outs without lifting look weird - even though I played before lifting was allowed...
all white guy Haka=fail I saw jazz hands, trigger fingers, what the hell, were people looking at eachother to figure out the moves it seemed like it was almost everyones first haka
Bill McClaren was a delight as a commentator, I could listen to him all day, but, heavens, Cliff Morgan's commentary was absolutely electrifying on this occasion.
Was this THE greatest try? Even as a Kiwi I'm tempted to say so. From the moment Bennett makes the first flashing sidestep there's a sort of poetic beauty about the flowing move. Supreme rugby. And that Baa-Baas backline has to be one of the greatest of all time, a la the 71 Lions (whom I had the great fortune to see twice!)
That haka was hilarious. It was like my primary school class last week during their dance lesson. Everyone looking around for some sort of guidance but noone actually able to provide it coz they didn't have a clue!
Great stuff from both sides. Not a great AB team but not a weak one either. Some ordinary results on that tour but we did beat Wales & at the time that was all that mattered. Pity the game wasn't at Twickers, the sour Welsh booing did mar the game somewhat.
British rugby was extremely strong during the period and would reach its zenith in '74 & probably would have beaten the AB's again '77 but for an overly conservative approach.
@ragers66 The Lions would have beaten the ABs in 77 if the best Welsh backs had gone on the tour. The pack (e.g front row) was strong but great players like Edwards were missed.
"Kirkpatrick to Williams. This is great stuff. Phil Bennett covering, chased by Alistair Scowan. Brilliant! Oh, that's brilliant! John Williams, Brian Williams, Pullin, John Dawes. Great dummy! David, Tom David, the half-way line. Brilliant by Quinnell. This is Gareth Edwards. A dramatic surge. What a score! Oh that fellow Edwards".
Great to see it again . They are all great, but Phil Bennet in first try ? Its worth a look in slow motion or just by pausing it - if you start the clock when he has picked the ball up (0:44) he then beats 5 players separately and in turn (I'm including the guy he passes past) by the time he delivers that pass (at 0:49), 5 seconds later ! Stunning skill
@avril2 I agree with the proper Rugby, but in thoes days, tackles were allowed over the shoulder, but not around the neck, (not that they cared about that too much by the looks of it...) When I played for the University of Maine, it was no above the shoulders.
@avril2 I agree, I love the rugger from this era. Less structured and more flowing, allowing individual skill to come more into play. Today's footie can be too defence oriented.
I remember the Telegraph quoting the NZ coach that THE try was actually bad rugby, with all those risks. He'd have a bloody heart attack today, with people trusting to their tackles rather than finding touch and trying moves from anywhere on the pitch.
When I played, it was kick it out for God's sake and let's have a breather !!
haha rugby in those times was so different... the players too its really funny to see haha.. but still great rugby great try the first one, its worth to watch... thanks for the video!
For those criticising the Haka here, please remember this was THE match that the ritual impression of the inebriated Vegas-Elvis evolved into the traditional Haka as we know it today. Follow the camera from 0:22 to 0:33 and you'll see the entire transition before your very eyes.
1:43 One of my favorite commentaries, as it ties Cliff Morgan's wonderful character with his shear joy of the monumental try. "Edwards... What can touch a man like that?"
@o0NicolaiP0o The Babarians are an invitational side, sort of an 'all-star' team (they certainly were in this game!) often selected to play against international sides, at the end of a tour by teams visiting the British Isles. Masses of tradition and a throwback to the (better?) amateur days. Can't post with a link, but google Barbarians RFC.
I watched the game live on TV. Never seen anything to beat it before or since. The commentator was Cliff Morgan, the great Welsh fly-half of the 1950s. Thanks a lot for this.
I was 15 when this game was played and after all these years I still can't believe a rugby game can be played so well by both sides. Amateur rugby really had something special. The star was David Duckham - the best side-step ever! It also shows how bad Going was passing and how good Bob Burgess was picking it up at his feet all the time. The Dawes "no try" would have been better than the first in my opinion. Thanks for a great video compilation.
my absolute favourite sporting sequence bar none. No matter how many times I watch it, it still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up! Regarding the Haka, I agree that is without doubt the worst rendition I have ever seen, ther's a guy in the middle who appears to be doing the Hokey Cokey :-)
You see, it couldn't happen today. These were the greatest players of their day DOING IT FOR FUN - simply exprerssing their skills for the sheer joy of it and devil take the hindmost if we drop the ball - it's "only a game". Thr professionals of today are fitter and faster, but they DO NOT sidestep with their back to the opposition ten yards from their own line and unsupported !!!! They pop it into touch because they don't want to LOSE THEIR JOB. And you can't blame them.
great game! there was such flowing play from both sides, more intuitive than learnt. I remember that this was considered compulsory viewing for first year rugby players. we all tried to be either an edwards, duckham or williams. brings back many happy memories :) and to be fair, who gives a shit about the haka anyway?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I have seen this game many a time and it was a terrible game, the All Blacks didnt even turn up for most of the game. It wasnt a game at all it was a barbarians training run. A real game of Rugby is a back and forth with the result only a certainty at the final whistle. Its where both teams are playing so good that they are so even This was always just a routing. I think the All Blacks v Wallabies Bledisloe Sydney 2000 is the best game ever. And im an Aussie!
There's something about gareth edwards sense of positioning and movement, for example at about 3:40, that was just so ahead of his time. You can just tell how ahead of his time he was.
Also, David Duckham: one of the greatest sidesteps ever!!!
@thomaswow1 Sorry, that's definitely NOT the worst. Check out England v NZ, Twickers, 1967. That's a lot worse than this. Birtwistle (eighth from left) and especially Muller (ninth from left) were the worst. (God only knows what Muller was thinking, he was hardly moving, as if hung-over and the slightest movement was torture) but the lot are so bad that the England side could have done a better job. Search for: All Blacks tour British Isles & France 1967: England vs. New Zealand part 1/2
@newland50 Fair Comment. Considering the "Haka" is a pre-war tribal dance meant to confront warriors of enemy tribes.. Then why do they look like a bunch of limp wristed drunks, stepping off a bus and about to visit a night-club in Basildon. ?
@thomaswow1 - I actually think it was more of a cultural exchange back then, they weren't trying to intimidate like they do now. As a Kiwi, I don't think they should do it before every game - they should only do it when they really, really mean business. It's become really contrived and everyone expects it.
The Barbars doing what the Barbars do best, Scintillating exhibition rugby! Two wonderful sides. The mighty All Blacks at the toip of their game against a fabulous Barbarians side including most of the fabulous 70s Welsh ably aided and abetted by Pulin and David duckham. Truly a wonderful match played in a great spirit by both sides. I bet anyone involved in that game walks a foot taller as a result. Absolutely loved it. Rugby played like this has no equal as a sport anywhere, anytime.
Im an Australian and naturally a wallabies supporter but even I can really appreciate this match and say that this has to be one of the best sporting contests ever.
hoodynz the great thing was that every barbarian interviewed about the game had nothing but praise for the NZ team and conceding they were the best team in the world, the baa-baa's played with reckless abandon to beat them and the brilliant thing was the New Zealanders started playing with flair too, im Welsh and i could care less who won but loved the fact that both sides played the game the way its supposed to be played, todays rugbys is in danger of losing this flair i.e kick, kick, kick etc
Wow, that's probably the most lethargic Haka I've ever seen. I don't think they cared about it so much back then, though. Overall a great game. I hope someday to see the entire game. I've only seen clips.
Check how Edwards hangs back and times his run to absolute perfection. That kind of timing is what separates true footballers from the rest. It's why Shane Williams has overcome the size issue to score so many tries.
Nice to see Phil Benett on finally getting a decent conversion kick at the end.;-) Yeah, all brilliant. I know about the others but Duckham had one hell of a side step!
The All Blacks had not performed the haka at all as far as I remember on the whole tour. They failed to appreciate how much the British public wanted to see it.
They changed their minds for this match and that is why it seems relatively disappointing. Watch it again and you can see clearly that several players are unfamiliar with the routine and you can see that they are desperately trying to follow the actions of one or two team mates.
Well that explains it. They got their coordination together pretty smartly after the whistle blew. I showed this game to a group of Americans who`d never seen rugby before and they were salivating after 10 minutes.
what a wonderful period of rugby this was, this amazing game, the stunning Welsh team about this point followed up by the incredible '74 Lions tour-pure class.
yes i agree but i think the irish had the best team in the northern hem around this time. didnt we win the 5 nations this year. i think ireland and wales drew 7 all or something in that years 5 nations. but wales had some quality players back then. bennet was unbelievable breaking from defence back then. great great player
Unbelieveable game. Obviously everyone talks about 'the try', but there was so much quality on show, and Duckham showed how could he could have been on a decent international side. And did JPR ever NOT get high-tackled?!?!?
Magic, love the hair and love the sidesteps! Also its good seeing Duckham playing for someone good, i remember watching all these 100 greatest ever tries videos when I was a kid and Duckham would be on about half of them, making a despairing dive as the welsh/kiwi/aussie went past him to score.

As a Kiwi, I don't think they should do it before every game - they should only do it when they really, really mean business. It's become really contrived and everyone expects it.

The haka is brilliant.
If the second try had been scored, we'd have the second-best and the best tries ever scored in one match!

what a dummy by duckham and a great try by john bevan.

Amazing... in one passage of play David Duckham dummies the Cameraman as well as the entire New Zealand back row.

I was only twelve when this game was played and my father told me that I would never see a better game of rugby played.
He was right.....and I am a kiwi :)

the haka back then isn't quite what it is now is it?
0:47 awsome stepping there.
I love watching rugby the way it was, it used to be so much more free flowing, nowadays you cant get 2 seconds without being tackled.

david duckham. he used complain that the english pack never gave him clean ball but when he was with the likes if these guys, he was excellent

god, I cringe looking at that haka..thank god they do it properly these days
marcellin20 2 years ago 2
Yes they do look a bit like extras out of shaun of the dead.
mav3r1ck69 2 years ago
I can't believe how camp and half-hearted the haka was done. These days they look as though they want to kill the opposition.

As an All Black fan, this game is ALWAYS discussed by those who know anything about the game.
To see highlights of this game, of this quality, is outstanding.
This game must rate as being oneof the best games played since the game started.
Truly an outstanding display of fine rugby - even though we lost!
hoodynz 2 years ago 3
hoodynz the great thing was that every barbarian interviewed about the game had nothing but praise for the NZ team and conceding they were the best team in the world, the baa-baa's played with reckless abandon to beat them and the brilliant thing was the New Zealanders started playing with flair too, im Welsh and i could care less who won but loved the fact that both sides played the game the way its supposed to be played, todays rugbys is in danger of losing this flair i.e kick, kick, kick etc

This Haka is increible !!!!

Wow, that's probably the most lethargic Haka I've ever seen. I don't think they cared about it so much back then, though. Overall a great game. I hope someday to see the entire game. I've only seen clips.
astrosteve 2 years ago
The crowd was booing Batts because he'd had a particularly spiteful, albeit humourous to the onlooker, stink with Duckham on the sideline.
Little Grant was staring up a Duckham not 'giving an inch', cause he couldn't afford to!

Check how Edwards hangs back and times his run to absolute perfection. That kind of timing is what separates true footballers from the rest. It's why Shane Williams has overcome the size issue to score so many tries.

It looked like a bunch of pissed blokes impersonating a haka at a bbq. Extremely amusing.
carntspell 2 years ago
I am old enough to remember this wonderful game.
The All Blacks had not performed the haka at all as far as I remember on the whole tour. They failed to appreciate how much the British public wanted to see it.
They changed their minds for this match and that is why it seems relatively disappointing. Watch it again and you can see clearly that several players are unfamiliar with the routine and you can see that they are desperately trying to follow the actions of one or two team mates.
richjpjprich 2 years ago
Well that explains it. They got their coordination together pretty smartly after the whistle blew. I showed this game to a group of Americans who`d never seen rugby before and they were salivating after 10 minutes.

what is the chorus of the fans at start?
please give me the title?

It`s an old Welsh folk song called Sospan Fach. When sung at the Arms Park/ Mill Stadium is just awesome.
David Duckham was an Englishman called Dai. He was true class.

what a wonderful period of rugby this was, this amazing game, the stunning Welsh team about this point followed up by the incredible '74 Lions tour-pure class.

yes i agree but i think the irish had the best team in the northern hem around this time. didnt we win the 5 nations this year. i think ireland and wales drew 7 all or something in that years 5 nations. but wales had some quality players back then. bennet was unbelievable breaking from defence back then. great great player

Unbelieveable game. Obviously everyone talks about 'the try', but there was so much quality on show, and Duckham showed how could he could have been on a decent international side. And did JPR ever NOT get high-tackled?!?!?
Salsiccia1 2 years ago 2
Didn't have the courage to tackle JPR the right way, what a hard man.
