  • Randy Purcell is awesome, but Tom Bones Malone is the best

  • the trumpet player that played right after the trombone was good, but I hate it when trumpet players just play as high as they can.

  • five of my bandmatesand ia saw maynard live at the edinboro state college auditorium. the next year he had a hit with gonna fly now from rocky. the place was jammed. as he came on stage he said" my audition last year must have been really good:!!! what a character

  • youtube -> yves paquet - mcarthur park

  • One of the nice things about being an old fart is that you "were there" when some things happened. I have "Live at Jimmy's", got it when it was new, and also got Maynard's autograph on the cover. He came to a small venue in Gainesville, FL when I was going to school and a buddy was working there. I got in to watch the rehearsals, express my awe, and get a few autographs. There ain't nuthin' like live, baby.

thatmuse76, not sure when it was recorded it, but the album was released in 1974.

  • At 2:23, I jizzed myself... And, 2:34

  • Was this around 1970 or 1971?

  • Maynard probably got all the women

  • One of the great jazz icons. If you can get a copy of "Live at Jimmy's", DO IT. Maynard, you will always be thought of well.

  • Favorite band, favorite time, favorite song.....Love Love Love!! Lisa Ferguson..PS dig the satin jacket from Biba's

  • Too bad the Buruce Johnston bari solo was cut. Check it out on "Live at Jimmy's"

  • He was absolutely brilliant. I miss Maynard.

  • love how he clams about 4 times around 1:20. never heard him bail like that...

  • @RCohen2299 Who clamed, who bailed?

  • The hair gives him strength ....

Haha, sweet jesus, the man can play.

  • LMFAO.... at 2:48 maynard slaps his ass

  • one of the great trumpet player.. " Lynn Nicholson"

  • Lynn was as good as anyone out there. I saw him a couple of times in 1974 with Maynard. I never understood why he left the band so quickly. Stan Mark stayed for 10 years! I still think it was the most ferocious trumpet section I ever heard.

  • great concentration with his trumpet!

  • Too White.. lol

  • 2:49 lol. Miss!

  • Maynard had such style...showcasing his band...giving everyone their due...tell me one other musician like him!

  • Doc Severinsen.. !! aLso they have desame characteristics..

  • Never had the privledge to see Severinsen live....Maynard was terriffic though...and gave lots of kids attn at local schools in about ever town he ever played...

  • wow, look at lynn's hand when he plays those high notes, he's not struggling at all! he wiggles his fingers like he's not putting any effort! =P

  • R.I.P. Randy Purcell - May 16, 2009

  • Dig Randy Purcell's sound on his solo. That's my favorite trombone sound of all time. He is one of my favorite players.

  • totally...

  • i love that lip trill he does at the end of his solo. it fits in so perfectly

  • they are in different dimensions. You can't compare them fairly, but regardless this not Maynard's best Mac. There are some vids of him in the 60's when he still went for clean riffs over ripping them into the next octave, but he was becoming more "entertainer" and it paid his bills, can you blame him?

Either way, both of them are Trumpet legends, but maynard helped discover and grow other players far more than Severinsen did.

  • Chuck Norris anytime but here lol

  • lol

  • oh please, maynard ferguson could melt chuck norris' face with his high voltage trumpeting!!!!

  • I don't really like Maynards play, but the trombonist is great.

  • I gotta agree with you there. Such a sweet sound from that trombone. Maynard sounds weird in this vid.

  • Yeah, but if you notice, he's probably had a few drinks before this performance.

  • BEFORE his performance? Hell, when I saw him just before he died, he ALWAYS kept a full glass on stage, lol. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't water, lol.

  • Yeah he sounds really off here, lol

  • he sounds tired as usual.... that's maynard for ya.... what a partying sort of guy.... wish i couldve met him T-T

  • Another great solo by Randy! You play that 'bone!

  • woohoo maynard we love you and miss you! RIP

  • Ya, he was such a good player. Its a shame that he had to go. I aim to get somewhere close to what he plays someday.

  • I love how Maynard always gives the other soloists in his band props for their playing. Sure he was the best, but from the videos I have seen, he always give them their spot in the limelight.

  • who is the white trumpet player with the afro. Can't think of his name and it's bothering me.

  • That would be Stan Mark. Afros were big at that time.

  • Jew-Fro

  • Holton

  • what kind of piece is maynard playing here?

looks like a marcink but idk anyone?

  • HighCDoubleG answered you, but more specifically, it's probably a Holton ST302. Maynard designed a few horns, including the later ST308. The ST302 was (I think) a .468 bore, and he had a very similar ST304 that was a .459 or .460 bore or thereabouts.

  • Why wasn't the focus on the trombonist? Gotta love the instrument, even if its up against MF.

  • je l'adore

  • that trombone player was real sweet on his solo

  • Randy Purcells (I think that's how you spell it) Check him out on Maynard's version of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me" with the whacky yellow shirts.

  • I played this tune in my Jazz Band at San Jacinto South a couple years ago. Great stuff. I should take another semester of this. Great stuff.

  • Buen tema ...por los recuerdos que me trae

    cuando iba en la secundaria

JAZZ FM siempre EN MI ALMA

  • lynn friggin nicholson! are you kidding me?

  • seriously...

  • I meant: God bless you! Amazing!

  • Good bless you Genius!

  • love this song omg i could die know

  • GENIUS!

  • Rest in peace this guy is the best trumpet player ever

  • this is so much better than that weird version about cakes...

  • maynard ferguson is probally the most successful and best role model that can play trumpet. He also is better and always be better that you!

  • maynard please come and take me away from here

  • Anyone know what year this is?

    Looks circa 1974

  • Maynard, you will always be the best. We miss you!

  • What song did they go into after MacArthur Park?

  • Same song, just a different part

  • It's still part of MacArthur Park. Listen to the version on MF Horn 4&5. Best Live Big Band recording ever!!!!

  • it sounds like the Pearl and Dean theme tune, but just because it has a very smiliar rhythm.

  • I was lucky enough to meet him and listen to him play a couple of times. The last being just a couple months before he died.

  • great...boss & lynn vau!!!

  • Awesome! Amazing. Maynard, you will always be the best. I will NEVER forget you. We miss you.

  • Maynard Ferguson being Maynard Ferguson with that i'm so fly look (which is good).Hip and young he will stay!(hint.hint better than Chuck Norris will ever be!!)

  • better watch out! chuck norris is going to roundhouse kick you for saying that!

    go maynard!

  • i think it was referring to getting away from life in the sense that music makes u feel different if u know what i mean

  • This is a great video, I only wish it showed the whole song. It got me wondering what Lynn Nicholson was up to so I did a Google search and got his email! I wrote to him and told him about a performance in St. Louis with Maynard. At that time they sent the band into the crowd for "Hey Jude". Lynn was about 10 feet behind me and blew my ears off. He actually wrote me back thanking me for the memories!

  • I can't get enough of Lynn Nicholson's solo

  • I was lucky enough to play next to him in a local band (WCC Jazz Band) after he played with Maynard. I remember him holding a double high C with no problem, and with volume. Wow!

  • HE IS A GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • I remember seeing him about a year ag in baltimore at the blue not cafe. it was an awesome concert. i also play trumpet. so i definetly appreciated the range.

  • this song has been stuck in my head now for about a week it is so amazing. the flow the movement and just the overall sound of the piece just makes me want to pick up my trumpet and play it is truly on of the best trumpet piece i have ever heard. and the trombone was amazing

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!!!

  • Gabriel and Maynard!

  • I really miss Maynard, I play the saxophone and flute and he was always a great inspiration to me. His style was timeless and his music adapted to all the decades he lived through. Maynard, I hope you know how much we miss you!

  • i second that, a true inspiration he was! especially cause i as well play trumpet, i dont know how much more you can say for him

  • bring back the big bands of the 70s maynard, buddy, count, woody, mercer, we miss you. this generation is a let down. just working to get rich and not giving much back. we need to produce this kind of lasting greatness for the future.

  • i agree.. that sean jones guy or w/e is a joke. all these noobs are in for the money, and they get their colleges like Juliard and etc., and BAM they're considered pros... ugh

  • Dude! I ABSOLUTELY & TOTALLY 100% AGREE WITH YOU. Guys like that and that run in that 'clique', put this stuff down almost to the point that it is beneath them. You got it! 'Noobs' you call 'em. I call 'em 'schmendricks'!!! You hit it on the head, bro!!!

  • are you saying that Juliard and Northwestern are bad schools and easy to get into? Dumbass

  • Yes, I am. For many reasons

  • im agreeing as well. but i have to admit i'm a fan of Gordon Goodwin

  • You said it all. That is SO TRUE!

  • awfull... Yeah Derek Watkins is alot better

  • everyone is entitled to their own opinion but calling it awful is a terrible way to do so, i agree that wasnt the best arrangement ive heard from maynard, but calling it awful is just being a dick to the people here

  • yeah baby yeah!!!

  • my inspiration

  • Amazing, what a gift he had.

  • he can still do it haha

  • hes dead now idiot

  • Saw him in Rockville, Md - Mont Coll back in the 70's - awesome live! Had the brass go out in the audience and they played a back and forth exchange with those still on stage. Incredible.

  • Sorry about the dad comment. Maynard is the man!

  • I love the sound of his trumpet. That's pretty difficult to do. My dad plays trumpet, but he's not this good. Wait a second, my dad is Maynard Ferguson!

  • yuor dad is what?

  • HUH?

  • was not is

  • I could beat that lynn nicholson character any day

  • derek watkins is better

  • a better idiot maybe

  • nice one

  • I have heard both of them live. They are different types of player. Maynard was much more inventive and a fantastic band leader. The best leader of a band I have ever seen.

  • Fabulous playing. Love those high notes!

  • i can do it also just give me sometime

  • RIP maynard, if i could be half as good as you I'd be happy.

  • Wow, was that clone of Ferguson at 2:10? (*_~)

    R.I.P. Maynard

  • Who's that on the trumpet?

  • HUH??????/

  • Lynn Nicholson

  • Great Video!

Look at my father's "Sepp Zink - Piano Medley (Live, Final Countown)"! The last song is "MacArthur Park"!

  • my favorite trombone player, at ~1:50.

    he's amazing.

and maynard is still the king of the upper register

  • Moving right along...it was really weird the way the kid (Lynn Nichols?) was holding the trumpet with his left hand. Never saw that before! What's the advantage to that, I wonder?? Play MaCarthur Pack back to back with Lee Morgan's tune 'Ceora' and you'll see what a trite ditty is is.

  • Nichols was holding the trumpet like that so that he didn't apply any pressure to his lips or start to play with pressure. Many trumpet players do that so they don't pull the trumpet in towards their mouth as their trying to reach that high.

  • Thanks for the info, karv92. Hmmm...I'll have to give it a shot. Maybe I can hit somethng above high C. Got a C# once (not bad for the amount of time I've been playing).

  • How long you been playin?

  • I started back in January after a layoff of several decades. Actually, I'd be happy with a just comfortable high C range at my age! And you?

  • 4 years

    how old are you

  • kar92, just saw your message. I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather and then some! Okay: I just turned 63. If I can inspire someone my age to start playing again, that would be a big accomplishment.

  • wow talk about picking it up again fast man. when i started it took me a year to play to a g under high C

  • satrinifan, I've been practicing a lot. I recently had hernia surgery followed by a bad cold, and now anything above an E is shaky.

I don't know how guys like Maynard got up there night after night and screamed away. It's amazing.

  • AL Chez(David Letterman)does the same thing. HaHa! MF almost knocks Lynns horn off his hands.

  • Well, "shitty" was a little strong. I dunno; it just sounds trite. Sounds like it goes down from a minor 7th one whole town down to a major 7th, then another major 7th - just an insipid sound. Was this from a movie or something? I did like the trombone solo; he made the most of what he had to work with.

  • In the 70s Maynard always started his second set with MacArthur Park and totally blew minds, I saw Bob Summers with Horace Silver a few years later and I never understood how he got into Maynard's band because he's not known to be a screamer and Maynard requires a solid "G" from his trumpeters, Randy Purcell's trombone always sounded so beautiful, Lynn is fantastic, notice how Maynard always spanked him when he left the stage, like a proud fatherWhat a great video clip, man I miss him so much!

  • i think that the problem with lynns sound is that he didnt really use the microphone like maynard did

  • It's a shitty tune, but I guess if you gotta listen to it, Maynard's version is the best choice.

  • Personnel: Maynard Ferguson: trumpet, leader; Bob Summers, Lynn Nicholson, Stan Mark, Ernie Garside: trumpet; Don Hans: trumpet, flugelhorn; Andy Mackintosh: alto sax; Brian Smith: tenor sax; Bruce Johnstone: baritone sax; Randy Purcell, Jerry Johnson: trombone; Alan Zavod: electric piano; Rick Petrone: acoustic bass, bass guitar; Danny D'Imperio: drums.

  • Is that Andy MacIntosh on alto?

  • lynn dont have the projected volume of MF which gives the impression of being higher than it is. its just squeacky sound aint tit.

  • if you ever stood and played next to Lynn like I have, you wouldn't say that. He can pierce a wall with his sound. He makes it look effortless.

  • Amen to that! Just to hear him warm up required ear protection.

  • in the recording he goes to at least a double c

  • Maynard is 3 semi-tones under double C, Lynn, is way over it!!! Sharp 4th above double C. Trombone trill is cool also!

  • Maynard hits a double C in the recordings when he plays the solo that lynn nicholson has in this video.

  • ok, dats high

  • What's the highest note played by Lynn?

  • If Lynn is the other trumpet player, it's a triple-high F#

  • Hits a double-high A from 1:23 to 1:26

  • This is one of my all time favorite tunes from Maynard. It is just the coolest!!!

  • He play in sinton, TX.

  • This is my favourite DVD in my collection! He'll forever be 'The Boss', and he's playing has clearly inspired guys like Lynn Nicholson, Stan Mark, Roger Ingram, Scott Englebright just to name a few. He's had some terrific lead players in his band over the years, thats for sure.

(NB: Go Aussie GO! Alan Zavod is amazing on keys in this concert!).

  • well errr i think i shud die now this guy is amazing...i am a trumpet player myself and that is unbelievabley high and how does his lips not expload

  • Lynn Nicholson was cooler than most. But Maynard was even cooler showcasing another dudes talent. I don't suspect Maynard felt threarened in any way. Real great even if the video is too short for my taste. I'd listen to this all day if I could.

  • This was his greatest song composition...we played it back in the late 70's. Our band director was a huge Maynard fan. What a great loss. RIP Maynard!

  • Takes me back to when I was a young trumpet player in the early 80's and we'd come into the band room and MFI and MFII were blasting out the speakers! Good times, great music, good memories...

  • Awesome arrangement! Too bad it doesn't go all the way to the end.

  • Are there any other recordings of lynn besides the 2 on you tube.

  • HOLY SHIT! LYNN NICHOLSON!

  • Hey thanx i will go check that one out!!

  • Randy Purcell on the t-bone!

  • Maynard is king and lynn is amazing,!!! but that is one good trombone player

  • Hi, jem77b --- did you check out the clip of MFO doing "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me"? Purcell is even more awesome on that one, if that's even possible LOL! :-)~

  • inigualable

  • Lovely stuff.

  • i love how maynard goes to smack lynns ass and his trumpet falls out of his hand

  • OMG...I was in high school when this first aired on TV!! I ran and got my tape recorder and taped the audio but never dreamed the video would still be around anywhere!!! I have this whole show practically memorized!!

  • Interesting grip on Lynn.. never seen that one before. Obviously a minimal pressure thing

  • lynn Nicholson plays lead for gloria estafan and sometimes celine dion at the palace and has played with harry connick

  • this is freakin beautiful...dude who does the tpet solo looks like he's boutta blow his brains through the horn

  • What an awesome solo. I believe he reaches an high E which is incredible. But, what ever happened to this guy?

  • Maynard Ferguson died this past summer. Hence the RIP post above you. RIP Maynard. In concert he's amazing.

  • I mean Lynn Nicholson
