five of my bandmatesand ia saw maynard live at the edinboro state college auditorium. the next year he had a hit with gonna fly now from rocky. the place was jammed. as he came on stage he said" my audition last year must have been really good:!!! what a character
One of the nice things about being an old fart is that you "were there" when some things happened. I have "Live at Jimmy's", got it when it was new, and also got Maynard's autograph on the cover. He came to a small venue in Gainesville, FL when I was going to school and a buddy was working there. I got in to watch the rehearsals, express my awe, and get a few autographs. There ain't nuthin' like live, baby.
thatmuse76, not sure when it was recorded it, but the album was released in 1974.
Lynn was as good as anyone out there. I saw him a couple of times in 1974 with Maynard. I never understood why he left the band so quickly. Stan Mark stayed for 10 years! I still think it was the most ferocious trumpet section I ever heard.
Never had the privledge to see Severinsen live....Maynard was terriffic though...and gave lots of kids attn at local schools in about ever town he ever played...

sorry guys, not a good performance, for real class and a better version of mccarthur, look for the doc severinsen version. dont wish to be rude, but everyone thinks maynard is better cos hes now dead. james dean story all over again. doc severinsen will always be better.
they are in different dimensions. You can't compare them fairly, but regardless this not Maynard's best Mac. There are some vids of him in the 60's when he still went for clean riffs over ripping them into the next octave, but he was becoming more "entertainer" and it paid his bills, can you blame him?
Either way, both of them are Trumpet legends, but maynard helped discover and grow other players far more than Severinsen did.
BEFORE his performance? Hell, when I saw him just before he died, he ALWAYS kept a full glass on stage, lol. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't water, lol.
I love how Maynard always gives the other soloists in his band props for their playing. Sure he was the best, but from the videos I have seen, he always give them their spot in the limelight.
HighCDoubleG answered you, but more specifically, it's probably a Holton ST302. Maynard designed a few horns, including the later ST308. The ST302 was (I think) a .468 bore, and he had a very similar ST304 that was a .459 or .460 bore or thereabouts.
Randy Purcells (I think that's how you spell it) Check him out on Maynard's version of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down on Me" with the whacky yellow shirts.
Maynard Ferguson being Maynard Ferguson with that i'm so fly look (which is good).Hip and young he will stay!(hint.hint better than Chuck Norris will ever be!!)
This is a great video, I only wish it showed the whole song. It got me wondering what Lynn Nicholson was up to so I did a Google search and got his email! I wrote to him and told him about a performance in St. Louis with Maynard. At that time they sent the band into the crowd for "Hey Jude". Lynn was about 10 feet behind me and blew my ears off. He actually wrote me back thanking me for the memories!
I was lucky enough to play next to him in a local band (WCC Jazz Band) after he played with Maynard. I remember him holding a double high C with no problem, and with volume. Wow!
I remember seeing him about a year ag in baltimore at the blue not cafe. it was an awesome concert. i also play trumpet. so i definetly appreciated the range.
this song has been stuck in my head now for about a week it is so amazing. the flow the movement and just the overall sound of the piece just makes me want to pick up my trumpet and play it is truly on of the best trumpet piece i have ever heard. and the trombone was amazing
I really miss Maynard, I play the saxophone and flute and he was always a great inspiration to me. His style was timeless and his music adapted to all the decades he lived through. Maynard, I hope you know how much we miss you!
bring back the big bands of the 70s maynard, buddy, count, woody, mercer, we miss you. this generation is a let down. just working to get rich and not giving much back. we need to produce this kind of lasting greatness for the future.
i agree.. that sean jones guy or w/e is a joke. all these noobs are in for the money, and they get their colleges like Juliard and etc., and BAM they're considered pros... ugh
Dude! I ABSOLUTELY & TOTALLY 100% AGREE WITH YOU. Guys like that and that run in that 'clique', put this stuff down almost to the point that it is beneath them. You got it! 'Noobs' you call 'em. I call 'em 'schmendricks'!!! You hit it on the head, bro!!!
everyone is entitled to their own opinion but calling it awful is a terrible way to do so, i agree that wasnt the best arrangement ive heard from maynard, but calling it awful is just being a dick to the people here
Saw him in Rockville, Md - Mont Coll back in the 70's - awesome live! Had the brass go out in the audience and they played a back and forth exchange with those still on stage. Incredible.
I love the sound of his trumpet. That's pretty difficult to do. My dad plays trumpet, but he's not this good. Wait a second, my dad is Maynard Ferguson!
I have heard both of them live. They are different types of player. Maynard was much more inventive and a fantastic band leader. The best leader of a band I have ever seen.
Moving right along...it was really weird the way the kid (Lynn Nichols?) was holding the trumpet with his left hand. Never saw that before! What's the advantage to that, I wonder?? Play MaCarthur Pack back to back with Lee Morgan's tune 'Ceora' and you'll see what a trite ditty is is.
Nichols was holding the trumpet like that so that he didn't apply any pressure to his lips or start to play with pressure. Many trumpet players do that so they don't pull the trumpet in towards their mouth as their trying to reach that high.
Thanks for the info, karv92. Hmmm...I'll have to give it a shot. Maybe I can hit somethng above high C. Got a C# once (not bad for the amount of time I've been playing).
kar92, just saw your message. I'm probably old enough to be your grandfather and then some! Okay: I just turned 63. If I can inspire someone my age to start playing again, that would be a big accomplishment.
Well, "shitty" was a little strong. I dunno; it just sounds trite. Sounds like it goes down from a minor 7th one whole town down to a major 7th, then another major 7th - just an insipid sound. Was this from a movie or something? I did like the trombone solo; he made the most of what he had to work with.
In the 70s Maynard always started his second set with MacArthur Park and totally blew minds, I saw Bob Summers with Horace Silver a few years later and I never understood how he got into Maynard's band because he's not known to be a screamer and Maynard requires a solid "G" from his trumpeters, Randy Purcell's trombone always sounded so beautiful, Lynn is fantastic, notice how Maynard always spanked him when he left the stage, like a proud fatherWhat a great video clip, man I miss him so much!
Personnel: Maynard Ferguson: trumpet, leader; Bob Summers, Lynn Nicholson, Stan Mark, Ernie Garside: trumpet; Don Hans: trumpet, flugelhorn; Andy Mackintosh: alto sax; Brian Smith: tenor sax; Bruce Johnstone: baritone sax; Randy Purcell, Jerry Johnson: trombone; Alan Zavod: electric piano; Rick Petrone: acoustic bass, bass guitar; Danny D'Imperio: drums.
This is my favourite DVD in my collection! He'll forever be 'The Boss', and he's playing has clearly inspired guys like Lynn Nicholson, Stan Mark, Roger Ingram, Scott Englebright just to name a few. He's had some terrific lead players in his band over the years, thats for sure.
(NB: Go Aussie GO! Alan Zavod is amazing on keys in this concert!).
Lynn Nicholson was cooler than most. But Maynard was even cooler showcasing another dudes talent. I don't suspect Maynard felt threarened in any way. Real great even if the video is too short for my taste. I'd listen to this all day if I could.
This was his greatest song composition...we played it back in the late 70's. Our band director was a huge Maynard fan. What a great loss. RIP Maynard!
Takes me back to when I was a young trumpet player in the early 80's and we'd come into the band room and MFI and MFII were blasting out the speakers! Good times, great music, good memories...
Hi, jem77b --- did you check out the clip of MFO doing "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me"? Purcell is even more awesome on that one, if that's even possible LOL! :-)~
OMG...I was in high school when this first aired on TV!! I ran and got my tape recorder and taped the audio but never dreamed the video would still be around anywhere!!! I have this whole show practically memorized!!
Randy Purcell is awesome, but Tom Bones Malone is the best
