I still like the driving levels, and the platform levels aren't as bad as people say. Some elements (like the cityscape or the buildings etc) show that the designers used actual reference from the film's design. Nothing groundbreaking except the scaling effect, but Sega put together a pretty nice game (unlike, say, Acclaim with Batman Forever).
If there's one thing this game is known for besides showing off the Sega CD's scaling capabilities, and having an awesome soundtrack, it was the notoriously frustrating difficulty.
The non-driving parts seems to be just the original Sega Mega Drive version of the game, was the Mega Drive version meant to be this but couldn't be due to lack of processing power?
OOOOWWWWW *-* I remeber playing this game with my friend when i used to sleep in his house, we passed long nights trying to beat the game because it was hard and annoying XD
i liked the driving parts in this game but the platform bits were annoying and quite tough in places. best thing about this version that was superior to the normal megadrive version (apart from the driving part added) was a great music soundtrack.
What was so good about the Sega CD version of "Batman Returns" was the kick ass soundtrack.
Used to play/listen to this all the time back in day. *McGrin*

The Super NES version blows this game away. It even had better music...you know, like the actual movie soundtrack, instead of elavator music.

the raster effect on driving sequences is quite good to be a Sega CD
